Web 2.0…a definitionterm describing the trend in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, and, most notably, collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies. From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0 [Accessed 24th July 2008]

Term coined by Dale Dougherty (O’Reilly Media)http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/oreilly/tim/news/2005/09/30/what-is-web20.html

Page 9: Learning 2.0 Introductory Workshop Presentation

Why Web 2.0?

• Before we expected our users to come to us Now we need to go to where our users are

• Many of our users are millennials, digital nativesThey use their phones more than their PCs (teenagers more concerned

if they lose their phone than if they lost their passport)

• Don’t need to be a techie – you can do it yourself

• Flexible & quick

Page 10: Learning 2.0 Introductory Workshop Presentation

Why not?

• Possibly short lived and difficult to predict what will or won’t be popular

• Relying on third party providers

• Not controlled/branded

• Like anything – evaluate – some technologies are useful others are not
