A Brief History of JMU Peer Advising• Started in 1990 - large number of majors / few faculty
• Academic Class with Credit and a Service Organization
• Average of 16 students in each class (Jrs. & Srs.) 32 Peer Advisors each year/all in Leadership Roles
• Received the JMU 2001/2002 “Outstanding Student Organization” for post-9/11 work in community
• Scope of Service now well beyond JMU – “Food Fight” / “Relay for Life”/ Assisting other majors @JMU & beyond
Peer Advising Timeline• Each Spring - 16 Sophomores recruited, interviewed, and selected
• First Semester of Junior Year – Training Class for 2 Credit Hours – Co-Taught with the Senior Training Liaison
• Senior Class runs the organization and Mentors the Junior Class – the Senior Coordinator leads each class meeting
• End of Fall Semester – Junior Leadership Positions selected
• Spring Semester – 5/5/5 Plan implemented – Senior Leaders mentor new Junior Leaders
• End of Spring – Peer Advising Banquet to celebrate the year

The Advisor – a faculty member who serves both as the organization’s sponsor, and as the classes’ professor.
The Graduate Assistant – a graduate student who helps the Advisor prepare for the class and acts as a consultant to the organization when necessary

The Talking Heads – a group consisting of the Coordinator, Training Liaison, and all three committee heads that provides leadership for the entire organization
The Committees – three subgroups within the organization; each responsible for specific organizational functions
