ABOUT THIS FACULTY/STAFF MANUAL

Learning Beyond the Classroom (LBC) is a unique component of the General Education

Program (Fall 2007 and beyond) recognizing that learning takes place in many different con-

texts. All students should be encouraged to take advantage of opportunities for experiential

learning beyond the classroom.

Learning Beyond the Classroom General Education Program

Education for Partic ipat ion in the Global Community

The Learning beyond the Classroom requirement is met when students have satisfied two of the six focus groups below at any time throughout their undergraduate career. These activities may or may not be credit-bearing. “LBC Approved” = Activities or events sponsored by an academic department, program, or college, desig-nated activities by Campus Life and Diversity and Community Involvement or other LBC vetted ac-tivities.

Group 1: Self and Well-Being Group 2: Community Service, Citizenship & Leadership Group 3: Cultural and Academic Activities and Events Group 4: Career and Professional Development Group 5: International and Multicultural Experience Group 6: Undergraduate Research

HOW LBC WORKS

What are Faculty and Staff roles & responsibilities for LBC? Roles & Responsibilities for LBC may include submitting a course or experience for LBC approval, over-seeing an LBC approved event, program or workshop, confirming student participation in an LBC ap-proved experience or confirming their attendance at an LBC approved event.

What is already LBC-Approved? Many experiences (conferences, workshops, speakers, etc.), if sponsored or coordinated by an academic department, college, program of the University do not need to be submitted for LBC approval. At the launch of General Education in 2007, such experiences were given a ‘by’ and do not need to be submitted for LBC non-course experience approval. Students ATTENDING such events may receive LBC credit. Campus Life and Diversity and Community Involvement have many programs, activities and programs which are LBC approved. Visit www.emich.edu/campuslife/ to find out what current activities are LBC approved. Additionally, several courses from all six groups and from various academic departments have been approved for LBC. Check the undergraduate catalog at http://catalog.emich.edu for the most updated list of approved LBC experiences and courses. 1

HOW TO COLLECT AND DOCUMENT

If you are hosting or coordinating an LBC approved art, cultural or academic event and promoting it as an LBC event, it is your responsibility to confidentially collect student attendance data and input it into my.emich. Be sure that you have both materials and personnel to collect attending student’s names and E#’s. If you or your department are unable to collect attending students E#’s, do not promote your activity as an LBC event. If you are a faculty or staff advisor for a student organization, an undergraduate research sponsor, an athletic director, director of a University mainstage or lab production you can approve student participation in an LBC approved experience. Noted below are guidelines for confirming student LBC Participation. Please note: we must employ strategies for collecting student names and E#s that do not violate EMU students’ rights. FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.

Confirming LBC participation through my.emich • Click on the “Employee” tab or “Faculty” tab • Click on “Application Administration” tab • Click on “Confirm Student LBC Participation” • Enter E# of the “EMU employee” confirming the participation • Enter E# of the student • Enter (through drop down menu) the LBC category being confirmed • Click “submit”

Checking the status of student LBC activity through

• Click on the “Faculty” tab or “Employee” tab • Select “Services Main Menu” • Click on “Faculty and Advisors” • Click on “Student Information Menu • Scroll down to the bottom and click on “Supplemental Advising Information” • Select the term– Submit • Enter the student’s E#- Submit • Confirm student– Submit • Select UG– Undergraduate– Submit Non-course LBC participation and attendance will be noted. At present, the Campus Life website (www.emich.edu/campuslife) and Under-graduate Catalog (http://catalog.emich.edu) offer the most comprehensive listing of LBC opportunities. Both of these web-based sites include a number of "live links" to other EMU websites where addi-tional information can be obtained. Make sure your site reflects updated program-ming.

Submitting Proposals for an LBC-Approved Course or Experience The LBC general education requirement is intended to provide experiences, which transgress the traditional classroom space. The spirit of LBC is to provide students exposure and opportunities to University and community experiences (programs, people, departments) which both reinforce course objectives and LBC outcomes. Each course approved for LBC credit regardless of category must meet stated outcomes and demonstrate substantial beyond the classroom activity (the LBC Committee suggests a minimum of 15 contact hours equivalent to one credit hour) of beyond the classroom experiential activity. Faculty and staff can submit course and non-course experience proposals for LBC approval in all six focus groups. For further information regarding submitting a course or non-course experience go to: www.emich.edu/gened/courseApprovalProcess.html LBC-Approved Course: Any faculty member, with departmental approval, can vet a course for LBC approval. Complete the Course Inclusion Form for General Education Program located at www.emich.edu/gened/courseApprovalProcess.html. Once completed and approved by the department, one electronic and one hard copy of the form should be submitted to the Director of Course and Program Development for distribution to the Gen Ed LBC sub-committee. If a course you teach is LBC approved, a student will receive LBC credit upon completing the course and you posting a course grade. If the student fails the course, the student will not receive LBC credit.

LBC-Approved Experience: Complete the Non-Course Inclusion Form for General Education Pro-gram located at www.emich.edu/gened/courseApprovalProcess.html. Any "EMU employee," with departmental ap-proval, can submit a course inclusion form. Once completed and approved by the department, one electronic and one hard copy of the form should be submitted to the Director of Course and Program Development (i.e., Bill Miller) for distribution to the Gen Ed LBC subcommittee.
