Term 2Week 1

Parts of Speech Practice - Adjectives & nounsAs you know, adjectives are describing words that give us more information about nouns. For example, look at the table below to see how adjectives describe nouns. Adjective Noun In a sentenceCrisp, clean sheets The crisp, clean

sheets crinkled as he lay on them.

Long, curly hair The dog’s long, curly hair shone in the sun.

Ripe, red apples Her ripe, red apples were sweet.

Colourful print I designed the colourful print on her t-shirt.

If you take away the adjectives, we, the readers, know less about the nouns. The sentences become less specific and not as interesting (descriptive):

1. The sheets crinkled as he lay on them. 2. The dog’s hair shone in the sun. 3. Her apples were sweet. 4. I designed the print on her shirt.

Grammar hack: To really test if a word is an adjective, here’s what to do:

1. Find the noun2. Ask yourself ‘What type of…(insert the noun)’. 3. If there is a word to describe that noun, you have found an

adjective.

The crisp, clean sheets crinkled as he lay on them.

1. Find the noun – sheets2. Ask yourself ‘what type of sheets’3. Crisp and clean sheets 4. Adjectives are: crisp, clean

TASK 2: Using your knowledge of what adjectives are and what they do, read the two texts below.

Text 1The story ‘The Drover’s Wife’ is by Henry Lawson. It is about the toughness of the woman in the bush. It was published in 1892.

Text 2This classic Australian story, The Drover’s Wife by the famous writer, Henry Lawson is important to read because it tells us about how tough people, especially women were in the 1800s in the Australian bush. It was published in 1892.

Questions about these two texts

1. What adjectives have been added to the first sentence to make it more descriptive? _______________________________________

2. Can you find any other adjectives in Text 2? _________________________________________________

3. How have the first and second sentences been joined to make the writing flow better? __________________________________________________________________________________________________

4. The final sentence is the same in both texts. Can you find an adjective? _________________________________________

You will find the answers at the end of this document. Try not to look at them until you

Parts of Speech Practice VerbsAs you know, verbs show actions – what someone is doing or what someone did. Examples: go, speaking, lived, been, is. I listen to the word and then repeat it.

Task 3: Read through the text in the box below and circle or highlight every verb you see. Write the verbs in the space below or in your book. The first one has been done for you.

Summary + learn another part of speechSo far today, we have revised the part of speech, nouns, adjectives and verbs. Another important part of speech is an adverb. You may or may not have learned about these.

An adverb explains more information about the verb. (This is very similar to the way an adjective gives more information about a noun).

Type of adverb How it modifies a verb

Example of this type of adverb

Time, frequency when Sometimes, Always, never, now, yesterday, weekly

Way, manner how Slowly, very, always, well, too

Place where Here, there, above, below, beside

3

A drover is a person who rides a horse to drive cattle or sheep over long distances, helped by cattle dogs. The reason they had to go long distances was to get to cattle markets and allow the animals to eat grass along the way.
