From the President Greetings fellow LIR members, Welcome to a new semester – and a wonderful offering of great programs. I look forward to seeing you at many of them. Just a reminder – we now have on line registration capabilities. I urge you to give it a try. It’s not complicated and the instructions are contained in this catalog. As you are probably aware, we now have our LIR Facebook page up and running. The Facebook page will be an opportunity for us to share pictures and stories of LIR activities and reach out to prospective members. We hope you will “Like” and Share” our page and invite others to as well. You do not have to be a current member to learn more about us. You will see pictures of the Steering Committee members in this catalog – the officers and the Committee Chairs that keep the organization humming. Please take a look and thank them now and then for what they do. There are also many members who serve as committee members and do a lot of the “legwork” necessary to keep things moving forward – too many to name here, but we could not function without them! Finally, this is your organization – please feel free to let me know your thoughts and concerns - and consider giving of your time when the need arises! Kathy Mahoney

Select the Courses and Tours you plan to attend.

If you select items with a charge, you need to need to complete the “Payment Option” section.

Your payment options are:

o “Send Invoice” if you would like to receive n invoice and pay later or

o “I will pay with my credit card” to pay immediately with a credit / debit card.

After you select your payment option, you must click on the box accepting the “Terms and

Conditions,” then click on “Submit” at the bottom of the page to complete your registration.

If you selected “I will pay with credit card,” you will automatically go to the secure online site to

enter your card information.

About Learning in Retirement & Membership

Providing lifelong learning opportunities for active, older adults

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Learning in Retirement (LIR) is a self-directed, membership-

based association of people 55+, offering learning opportunities to its members.

Members choose topics or subjects, take the lead in organizing classes, discussion groups or tours

and participate in peer teaching and learning. There are classes and instructors, but no tests or

grades. LIR is affiliated with UW Oshkosh’s Division of Lifelong Learning and Community

Engagement who hosts the organization and facilitates various learning activities.

Our CURIOSITY about things to know, people, near and far places did not stop when we retired.

We seek to DISCOVER new learning opportunities, places we yearned to know, and our friends, associates and those different from us.

We LEARN and GROW in knowledge, stature, and confidence in others and ourselves.

So, we SHARE with each other, our new experience and what we do for each other, for those who wish to be members of our organization and those who wish to know us.

Membership The annual membership fee for LIR is $80. Membership received after January 1 will be $40 for the

spring semester. Membership renewals are due on or before July 1 each year. New members may

join at any time.

LIR Membership $80

Attendance at unlimited courses for one academic year, including:

o Learning sessions led by experts in their fields;

o Member-led interest/study groups;

o Member taught learning sessions;

o Tours of local business and industry; and

o The ability to take part in on and off-campus performances (theater and music) and coach

bus trips to enjoy museums, gardens, and local cuisine. (These often have an extra charge

for tickets, admittance fees, food, and transportation).

Ability to purchase a UWO Titan Card* for $5, which entitles you to:

o City of Oshkosh transit buses at no cost;

o Access to Polk Library;

o UWO’s Healthy Titans Program; and

o Put money on your Titan Card to use at campus dining locations, the University Book Store

and More and campus vending and copy machines.

1. Garden Study Group Coordinator: Ginny Evans Group participants decide their own programming and activities. Experts are brought in for presentations on a variety of gardening and landscape topics. Field trips to area nurseries and gardens are a favorite activity. Dates, Time, Location: January 8, February 5, March 4, April 1, May 6, June 3; 10:00-11:30 am; Coughlin Center 2. Poetry and Prose Coordinator: Connie Berner These sessions are old fashion “round robins” where members take turns reading, reciting and talking about prose and poetry writings that have been meaningful to them over the years. The more serious is balanced with the light and humorous, the likes of “Watch Yourself Go By” balanced with ”Dried Apple Pies”. Come and join the fun and share your favorites with the group. Continental Girbau Oshkosh-Laundry Equipment Distributer Coordinator: Noreen Johnson A member of the management team will present the history of Continental Girbau, which has its production in Barcelona, Spain. The company specializes in equipment for laundromats, sports team cleaning, and industrial type machines used in large hotels and resorts. The Brain Presenter and Coordinator: Bill Mattes A continuation of the introduction for non-scientists to the remarkable structure known as the brain. Twilight Faculty Symposium Series Coordinator: Elliott Garb “The symposium model is a meeting held for the discussion of some particular subject.” LIR and the UW-Oshkosh Alumni Association are collaborating to have faculty do presentations in their areas of expertise. Following the symposium participants are encouraged to adjourn to a local restaurant and continue the discussion. Presenter: David Seimers, Chair of the Political Science Department David will discuss how the presidential primary season is shaping up, how changes in rules and context have affected the race, and speculate about where the presidential selection process may go from here. Date: January 28 Session II: Lessons from Lynching Presenter: Michelle Kuhl, UW Oshkosh History Department In the past few years, Americans have become more aware of racial disparities in the criminal justice system. Ordinary people capturing police brutality and posting videos online have galvanized social activism. Michelle will take a look at the roots of racism in the legal system by focusing on the

phenomenon of lynch mobs, seeing how the fight to end mob violence had both successes and failures that stay with us today. Date: February 11 Session III: Literary Hits of the 19th Century Presenter: Ron Rindo, UW Oshkosh English Department Five of the greatest works of American Literature—“The Scarlet Letter”, “Moby Dick”, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, “Walden”, and “Leaves of Grass” - all appeared in a span of 5 years (1850-1855). Emily Dickinson was also beginning to write her extraordinary poetry during this same period, and Frederick Douglass’ “Narrative” appeared just five years earlier. Was it something in the water? We’ll explore this dazzling period of literary productivity as we look closely at some of the finest American writing of the 19th century. Date: March 10 10. Reintroduction of Endangered Species Presenter: Elsbeth McPhee, UW Oshkosh Department of Environmental Studies and Biology Coordinator: Nathalie Moore Professor McPhee will describe the process, pros, and cons of introducing endangered species back into the wild. Is it time to scrap the Electoral College system that can turn the “winner” into the “loser”? Or did the founding fathers create a brilliant system that should stay? Fun with Memoir Presenter: Marsha Rossiter, Retired UW Oshkosh Faculty Adult Educator Coordinator: Lois Hedge Think you don’t have a story to tell? Think again! You’re not a writer? Don’t be so sure! Writing a memoir can be a fun and powerful learning experience—for just about anyone! Best of all, a memoir is a lasting and meaningful gift of yourself to family and friends. In this session we will: a) explore different types of memoir, b) consider some options for publishing a memoir, and c) look at some specific practices to get started on writing a memoir. USA/Cuba Relations—a Historical Perspective Presenter/Coordinator: Horace Davis The often and conflicted political relationship between the US and Cuba goes back in history to before the Spanish/American War. In 2015, after 51 years without formal diplomatic ties, the US Embassy in Havana and the Cuban Embassy in Washington are again open. The discussion will examine the source of the break in relations and the conflict between the two countries. The significance of the renewal to diplomatic ties will also be considered. Chef’s Choice: Evolution of the National Mall Presenter/Coordinator: Horace Davis The US National Mall is an urban park unlike any other in the world, a landscape that seems to be so timeless and eternal that it’s easy to forget that is actually man-made. This presentation is a documentary special by National Geographic/PBS and premiered on April 21, 2015. It brings the surprising story of the Mall’s creation and evolution to a national audience. Using a mixture of contemporary and archival footage, state-of-the-art graphics and exclusive aerials shot within highly restricted airspace, this hour will trace the Mall’s, and the country’s, transformation from fields and farmland to national icon. Genocides in the 19th and 20th Centuries Presenter: Michael Jasinski, UW Oshkosh History Department Coordinator: Nathalie Moore Professor Janinski will discuss genocides from the 19th and 20th centuries in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Why did citizens willingly participate? Was it just to follow orders or were there more deep-seated reasons? Why do some deny genocides have occurred? Religion and Ritual in Kathmandu, Nepal Presenter: Michael Baltutis, UW Oshkosh Religious Studies Department Coordinator: Nathalie Moore The autumnal festival of the god Indra in Kathmandu draws attention both to the Hindu king who ruled Nepal until 2008 as well as to the city’s ancestors. The festival features a forty foot pole representing Indra, and many mobile rituals performed throughout the city, processions that reinforce the festival’s underlying themes of periodic death and rebirth. The presentation will detail and richly illustrate the ways that this festival fits into the larger patterns of the Hindu and Buddhist religions of India and Nepal. Shakespeare’s “Othello” Presenter: Vivian Foss, UW Oshkosh Coordinator: Horace Davis In “Othello” Shakespeare looks at life in the 17th century and provides an analysis of human nature-envy, greed, malice, intrigue, evil, and political power. We will also examine matters of race relations, love, and friendship through a lens of the times. Professor Vivian Foss is back and will, in her energetic way, lead us through an in-depth analysis of the plot, the characters, race and cultural geography. She will take us back in time to visit the play, its audience, “the tension between the will and desires of the individual” within the constraints of society, and help us relate it to 21st century. Exploring the “Cloud” online Presenter: Michael McArthur, Librarian Coordinator: Mary Bayorgeon Learn how to use cloud computing services such as Dropbox to easily and securely share documents, photographs, music and videos with family and friends. Use cloud computing to help back-up, store, and access impersonal records from any computer, smart phone, or tablet in the world. Women in the New Testament Presenter: Kathleen Corley, UW Oshkosh Religion Department Coordinator: Noreen Johnson The true role of women in the New Testament is often obscured. This presentation will demonstrate through the New Testament that women were the true creators of the earliest church, and created the core of the Passion Narrative, the Eucharist, and beginning of resurrection faith. This presentation will identify and describe a number of prominent writers on the left and right worth reading. The presentation will also encourage those in attendance to write their own op-eds. Kangaroo Courts Presenter: Martin Gruberg Coordinator: Horace Davis Under the Bush and Obama administrations there were trials of alleged terrorists by military commissions. This presentation will examine these tribunals and those that weighed the fate of the Lincoln assassination conspirators and WW2 German saboteurs. R. Meyer Company.

However, the interior decorating was handed off to the world famous coveted artisans of Tiffany Studios. A remarkable number of these original Tiffany Studio elements still remain. through archaeological research. The session ends with a brief description of fur trade, native tribes, and newcomer tribes to Wisconsin and the location of Indian reservations in Wisconsin today. Chef’s Choice: Visit the Azores Presenter/Coordinator: Larry Lang Come learn about Sao Miguel Island which is the largest of the nine islands that comprise the Azores chain, located 900 miles west of Lisbon, Portugal. The island has been inhabited since the 1500’s and has a rich history. The rich volcanic soil, sufficient rain, and a mild climate encourages large and lush plants, flowers, trees, and grasses. Holstein cows are everywhere in the uplands so one feels at home. Roads are lined with hydrangea, azalea, and other flowering shrubs. Hot springs and thermal pools confirm the not-yet-dormant volcanic activity on the island. And since it is only now being discovered, you can still beat the rush. 36. The Troubled Genius of Caravaggio Presenter: Franca Barricelli, UW Oshkosh Associate Dean and Professor of History As one of Europe’s most influential and enigmatic artists, Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio (c. 1571-1610), burst onto the art scene in early 17th century Rome and changed the very nature of painting in his short, tempestuous life. His fiery temper was as renowned as his arresting work, which inspired generations of artists and included such masterpieces as “The Death of the Virgin” and

Experiencing Medieval Europe (Continuation from Fall Semester) Presenter: Kenneth Bartlett, Renaissance historian, author, and professor, University of Toronto Coordinators: Paul and Kathy Inman Using the Great Courses DVD presentation, our professor shares medieval legends and stories making key cities come alive. Our journey includes social structure, building and design, religious and political forces, all varied and complex but “all equally reflecting the fundamental forces of the medieval ages”. Anita: Speaking Truth to Power Presenter/Coordinator: Bernie Olejniczak An entire country watched as a poised, beautiful African-American sat before a Senate committee of 14 white men and with a clear, unwavering voice recounted the repeated acts of sexual harassment she had endured while working with U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. Please note that prices quoted for tours are subject to change due to circumstances beyond our control.

A signed copy of the Informed Tour Consent form is required for all participants of LIR Tours.

You do not have to pay at registration for any tours you wish to attend. Six weeks prior to the tour, a final arrangement letter is sent to acknowledge participants. At that time, you can confirm your attendance on the tour by sending your check. As a reminder, we will accept the first payments, up to the maximum number of participants for the tour. Should the tour reach capacity, your payment is returned and you will be placed on a waiting list. You will be notified if the office receives a cancellation and an opening occurs.

If your tour ticket can be resold a refund may be available, minus a $5 processing fee. All cancellations must be received in the Learning in Retirement office.

Refunds for cancellations due to inclement weather may be made only if LIR can receive a refund from the venue. If you are unable to attend a rescheduled tour on the rescheduled date, a refund will be made only if your non-refundable ticket can be re-sold.
