Concluding Paragraph:•describe the events that end your experience.•may include how a problem was solved•may include a reflection on the experience

Concept Development

A personal narrative tells a story about a personal experience2.

Example:

CFU In your own words, what is a personal narrative? A personal narrative is __________. How is a personal narrative composition organized? (Note: A list of prompts has been provided for the students to choose from.)

A personal narrative always has at least one character, you. A personal narrative always has a setting or place where the story happens. A personal narrative always has a plot, or series of events, that make the story interesting. A personal narrative is typically written in the order things happen.

Introductory Paragraph: •introduce the setting•introduce the topic•introduce the characters

Keep Your Eye on the Sky!

Last, give your narrative a catchy title.

I was in gym class when my teacher suggested we go outside and play softball. As wemade our way out to the field, my stomach slowly turned into a giant knot of fear.

•Define who the characters are; i.e., the narrator and his/her classmates

Softball is just not my game. I have a knack for always getting hit in the head by the ball. It doesn’t matter where I’m standing. The ball just seems to find me.

My teammates gave me a glove and put me way out in left field. I didn’t complain. I just wanted to make sure I knew when gym class ended so I wouldn’t be left behind.

Nothing happened the first three innings. Well, things happened, but not in my little part of the softball field. I started daydreaming. The next thing I knew, I heard the sound of a ball whizzing through the air. I put up my glove to protect my head, and an amazing thing happened. I caught the ball in my glove!

I was a hero to my classmates for the rest of the day. Not only did I catch the ball, but I helped my team win the game. And I learned something. I may not always see the flying balls that come my way, but I can always take a chance and try to catch one.

Importance

It is important to write a personal narrative composition because it will help you:1. tell stories by organizing them correctly.2. describe things that happened to you.

There are no CST-released questions for this standard.

CFUDoes anyone else have a reason why it is important to write a personal narrative composition? (pair-share) Why is it important to write a personal narrative composition? You may give me one of my reasons or one of your own. Which reason means more to you? Why?

One day, while I was walking down the street, I saw a very large cat up in a tree. The cat was crying and sounded so sad. I just knew I had to come up with a way to get the cat down out of the tree. So, I sat down and started thinking. I didn’t know how to climb a tree, and the cat may get scared and scratch me. I didn’t have a ladder. I decided to go back to my house and ask my dad for help. He and I went back to the tree with a ladder. My dad climbed the ladder and got the cat down from the tree. The cat was happy again and went back to its home. My dad and I went back home and rewarded ourselves with an ice cream cone.

Last summer, my family and I went on a trip. My dad wanted to go from Southern California to Arizona. We had to cross the desert to get to Arizona. We were in the middle of the desert when suddenly, the car shut off! We had run out of gas! Here we were, in the middle of the hot desert, and not a gas station in sight. My dad’s phone was not working so he couldn’t call anyone. He tried to remember how far backthe last gas station was but he couldn’t remember. He looked around to see if there were any houses that he could walk to, but there weren’t. He said that it would be too far to walk to the next town. He didn’t know what to do. Then, along came a police officer. The officer stopped and asked what had happened. My dad told him that he had run out of gas. The officer asked my dad if he had tried to call someone, and my dad told him that his phone was not working. The officer said, “Well, it’s too hot out here to wait for a tow truck, so I will take you and your family into the next town so you can call a tow truck.” My dad thanked him and we all got into the police car. When we got into the next town, my dad called a tow truck and they went out and got the car. When they got back, my dad paid the tow truck driver, said thank you, and then pushed the car up to the gas pump. He filled the tank with gas and we were able to finish our trip. My dad said, “Thatwas one expensive tank of gas, and I will never let the car run out of gas again.”
