The poet uses the phrase ‘chit of bone’ as a metaphor to show that there is a little piece of bone. The poet uses the phrase ‘chit of bone’ to suggest that this small piece of bone is like a message from the past. The ‘chit’ of bone suggests not only that the piece of bone is small and delicate but that it keeps us in touch with the past reminding us of what happened. Perhaps the poet is showing us that although it is tiny it’s important in reminding us about what happened.

The poet uses the ‘chit’ of bone to symbolise the way in which the earth keeps past and present in communication with each other. It is a symbol of contact and reminds us of how past events are both physically and psychologically buried but we can choose to find them if we dig deeply enough. It is very effective because it reminds us of the delicacy of life but also the idea of a legacy that is always with us. The past is always buried in the present. The combination of the metaphor with the contrast between the short vowel sound in ‘chit’ and long vowel sound in ‘bone’ is effective in reminding us about how two opposites can come together. Its power lies in reminding us of the lost voices in the last stanza because the bone does what the voices can’t – speak to us of the suffering.
