For years, many have predicted radical changes for the ways in which people learn. Technology has enabled a more personalized education for each of us, so why hasn’t the physical classroom environment adapted to support this change? As technology, learning and teaching styles continue to evolve, the classroom has become more relevant than ever. Learning is a social activity, and classrooms give students the ability to come together to share knowledge, make things and solve problems. The classroom isn’t going away—it’s in the midst of a renaissance, fundamentally changing modern education.

Today’s students don’t remember life without the Internet, smartphones or Siri to answer questions. Communication and education have been transformed by technology, yet while students have woven digital tools into every aspect of their lives, our classrooms haven’t caught up. In fact, nearly 2/3 of students use their smartphones for educational purposes*, but many aren’t even allowed to bring them into the classroom. It’s time to fundamentally change the way schools embrace emerging technologies, learning techniques and teaching styles. This begins with understanding what’s currently broken, then applying those findings to create settings that support the ways that today’s students are learning, exploring ideas, exchanging knowledge and expressing themselves.

Giving students the tools they need to succeed academically is all about getting them in the right zone. Innovative classroom layouts utilize 4-6 learning zones that include multiple types of furniture arrangements and the flexibility to reconfigure quickly to adapt to different learning methodologies. Quiet zones for reading and focus. Active zones for group discussions and presentations. Kinesthetic zones for tinkering and making. This puts an Instructor in total command of the environment, and helps students absorb information and make new discoveries.

From study breaks to group projects, libraries and multimedia centers now support a variety of activities throughout the day with spaces ranging from comfy lounges to individual workstations to group settings. Multifunctional SpacesStudents gather in cafeterias or multipurpose rooms for much more than lunch or special events. These areas are hot spots for impromptu learning activities. Whether camping out before or after school to cram for a test or using the space for special projects that require more space than the classroom provides, these areas are frequently used for educational purposes.
