Doghouse 1 : Reflections

Getting to know SketchUp is hard, there was a lot of tools that needs to remember, not only that but getting down the ideas of using the software to make something was even harder. Doghouse was the first assignment we did in class, the house took us approximately the whole 3 hour class period.

The main purpose of this assignment is for us to be more comfortable using the tools in SketchUp, and learning how to use them. In class, Jerry(my teacher) talked about some of the interesting concepts and principles that we can apply in to our model.

Tools used : select, rectangle, measuring box, push or pull, arc, move, copy, scale, tape measure, protractor, orbit, pan, and zoom

Inference tools are important to control placement of objects and relate them to others.

The 3D Warehouse is where I got the dog, and resized a little so it fit the house.

The image was save as an .png file and exported to my computer. Knowing what I need helped me get the right size and picture that I need.

Trouble thing I had was getting the stairs all the way around. Knowing that one of my line was not straight, I later add on the the missing part of my stairs to finish the job.

SLO 4: Visually and verbally explain the process of idea development using graphic representation

The process of developing the doghouse included a series of following direction and understanding the concept of using SketchUp. Understanding the basic step of using the tools and getting it to the right side help me to develop thismodel.

Doric Temple : Reflections

The Doric Temple took a long time to create. It was not only time consuming but also took a lot of thinking. Making this model took a lot energy, because the software may listen to you, an sometimes it has a mind of its own.

This model has a lot of ancient architecture idea in it as well, we took the concept from a 5th Century B.C Doric Temple that help us built ours.

The temple is made with 48 stone columns, that is 12ft apart holding the top beams will eventually hold the roof.

I face a lot of challenge making this model, the getting the right measurement into the right sides, putting the circle right in the middle, making sure that all columns can hold the stone up.

The purpose of this assignment is for us to be comfortable using SketchUp, and be able to make more challenging things, also learning how to use more tools.

Tools used : select, rectangle, measuring box, push or pull, arc, move, copy, scale, tape measure, protractor, orbit, pan, follow me, and zoom

Doric Temple Working on Triglyph took us the whole class to finish it. Looking at it might be a simple little thing, but

getting the detail and the right measurement took a lot of time.

The purpose of us continue working on it today in class is so we can dig deeper in to SketchUp, and use the tool to it’s extent.

Triglyph is one hard block, we gone through so much troubles and questions in class to make this. I never have been so frustrated in SketchUp as before, understanding why something is not doing what we expect it to be, we were introduce to a new tool, hide. Hiding a few lines in the model help it to look much better.

One thing I notice in SketchUp is that ( might be too late now) the first thing you put in your model is very important. If you get the first measurement wrong, your whole model can be wrong because of the first one.

Tools use: Pencil, Arc, Push/ Pull, Measurement Box, Measuring Tape, and Hide

Page 25: Learning Portfolio Midterm

Malevich In this model we get to learn new ways to use SketchUp, and new techniques we can apply to this

model. This project, we import an 2D image in to our SketchUp and build using the shape that is shown in the picture.

With the 2D image, we made it 8.5ft x 11ft and scale it 6 times, after we pick a shape and outline it and build to the way we want it to be.

Working this model was a little difficult, looking at it though it was easy, but I hit the wall when I that it don’t have a face when I needed one, due to this I redone a couple of times and finally got my face, and fix everything up.

In this model I developed many ideas for it, and very it can be place, how an giant T.V screen can go on the side plane.

Tools used : select, rectangle, measuring box, push or pull, arc, move, scale, tape measure, orbit, pan, and zoom

Sandbox Dream~~ In week 6 and 7 of our course we were introduce with a new Techniques Sandbox. Sandbox is use to

make hills, and dips in a flat surface. In class we practice using Sandbox to make hills and dips and apply it in our model for a whole new look.

Learning Sandbox can be fun and frustrating at the same time. I some trouble doing the stamps in class, and later fix the problem with a little help, but the fun part is having to know how use Sandbox and fit it in to Landscape. This way we can be more comfortable using Sandbox, and maybe be more professional at it.

Putting Landscape in to our model can make it look more realistic, and this assignment help us to use more tools in our model in the future. I think it turn out pretty good on this model.

Tools used : Sandbox, select, rectangle, measuring box, push or pull, circle, move, scale, tape measure, orbit, pan, and zoom

The 3D Warehouse is really cool, that’s where I got all my people.

There are many different people that is exporting the Model, use the size of people compare to the building.

SLO 4: Visually and verbally explain the process of idea development using graphic representation

The most of it just wanting to be more comfortable using Sandbox and apply it to the model, so it look more realistic. Also having to use Sandbox it’s like creating a world in side the screen, with Landscape and trees.

Paper Plane Air Force

• Today’s Lesson is working on folding paper planes on SketchUp, this lesson help us learn that they are folding technique that we can use to apply to our model.

• Folding paper plane seems easy, maybe there is only like 5 or 6 step, but the process of it is much harder then it looks. Having the right degree, and using the scale tool making sure you are having the right sides, it’s much harder.

• Defiantly, practice makes perfect. When I was doing this in class I had a hard time keeping up, because there were so many steps and things to remember. But at the end, I got it all handy dandy up!

• Tools used : select, rectangle, measuring box, push or pull, arc, move, scale, tape measure, orbit, pan, and zoom

Midterm SummaryWhen I first started on SketchUp, everything with

hard; remembering which key

to use and what each tool is

for. When we started working

on Doghouse1.

It took me some time to figure

things out. Doing the same

thing all over again, practicing

at home, and even making

sure things a is scale correctly.

1/5/14 40

After working on the Doghouse, we immediately jump to something harder the Doric Temple. Doric Temple I think by far the most difficult project we worked on, and I’m so glad we are done with it.Although the Doric Temple was hard, I learn a lot from it. The difficult steps and making different shape was indeed useful, and made future project much easier.

Page 41: Learning Portfolio Midterm

Midterm Summery (con.)

1/5/14 41

After the Doric Temple we came back

with something easier, but also uses

much of our imagination. The

Malevich was created by importing a

2D image and making it 3D.

In my model, I made something that

is more modern, because me or my

friends might accept colorful building,

but sociality won’t.

Later we move on to landscape, which in SketchUp call the Sandbox. We use it to make hill and dips in our model, and that’s how our Sandbox Dream, which I turn in to a little coffee place/ site viewing. Now we just finish working on folding paper plane, in my model I made it into my own little air force. I’ve also added the sky picture my teacher provide to make it more realistic.

Page 42: Learning Portfolio Midterm

Midterm Summary (con.)

1/5/14 42

Overall, I really like being in this class

so far. It’s by far the most relaxing

class. In relax, I don’t mean not doing

anything, but emotionally and just

excited to go to a class knowing that

you are not going to listen to a teacher

talk all day.

Working on model was hard at first, but we got around, everything became easier once we get use to working with the tools and getting to know how to use the keyboard.

As just a regular city college student I’ve never think that there is this class, and for me I just want to get my requirement done. Now that I’ve taken this course it got me thinking about architecture as a major.
