Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers, As we draw to the close of Term Two I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on what has been a term

like no other for our students, families and staff. Whilst the period of uncertainty created by Covid-19 has been challenging and unsettling, I am so proud of the amazing resilience shown from everyone and the fabulous growth and achievement displayed by many. Return to School for Face to Face Learning The transition back to school has been very smooth. I would like to thank all families for becoming familiar with the new procedures for pick-up and drop-off which have ensured that we are doing what we can to meet government guidelines for best practice. At this point I have not received updates from the Department of Education as to whether these procedures can be relaxed for Term Three, but as soon as I be-come aware I will communicate this to the com-munity. In the classroom students have quickly settled back into routines and focussed on building their capacity as learners. It has also been great to see the continuation of strong social relation-ships both in the classroom and in the school yard which have been developed based on our school values of responsibility, respect and safe-ty. Student Achievement It is very exciting to share the news that Abha Pimputkar in grade 5JK was shortlisted as a fi-nalist in the Metro Train Safety Poster competi-tion. Abha’s poster can be seen on a full page in the newsletter. Congratulations for such a fantastic achievement Abha.

Reports Classroom teachers have completed writing Semester One Reports. Reports will be sent home with students during week 11 of this term. Please be aware that due to the very different teaching and learning that took place for all of Term Two and also parts of Term One the reports do look different to the normal re-port. As we move into Semester Two, reporting will return to normal processes. Feedback Thank you to all parents and carers who have responded to the remote learning survey that was sent out via flexi buzz. We are also asking our grade 4—6 students to complete a survey as well as staff. This feedback will be used to support our evaluation of the remote learning program and what learning we can take from the experience to translate back into our face to face teaching and learning. It is important that cars are not stopping in the middle of the road to let chil-dren out or for children to get into the car. Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Sydenham-Hillside Primary School is excited to be participating. A new application is being used this year that offers a range of exciting features including:

access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)

a modern user-friendly interface

rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved

the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 4 September 2020. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from

Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers. To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

2JK—Our Remote Learning Journey

As we ventured into the world of remote learning, some of the Grade 2s from 2JK wanted to share their photo memories.

Photos include: Brent, Dijana, James, Chloe, Askaet, Ruby, Ben, Ava, Kayra, Lilyann, Meera, Michael, Mr. Kirk and Mrs. Butti-gieg from 2JK. Other team members include: Mustafa, Ayaan, Chris, Cooper, Dakotah, Doo-Lee, Ellie, Ethan, Jakob, Jay, Laura, Mariam, Mujtaba and Taeyah .

Hello! My name is Brent. My remote learning was the BEST! I enjoyed creating my water cycle poster because it was laid out nice and neat. I enjoyed the part where Mr. Kirk forgot to turn his mic off after the song and when Mrs. Buttigieg told us the activity for Mother’s Day. I’m glad to be back at school because I can see all of my friends such as Mujtaba, Mustafa and others. I miss staying at home and hugging my parents.

Hi my name is Ruby and my experience was amazing because I got to wear my PJs and finish early. I did lots of work. I liked Fun Friday and Wacky Wednesday. I en-joyed when Mr. Kirk sang on the morning message, it was funny. I enjoyed Mrs. Buttigieg’s videos. I missed seeing my friends and teachers too. I felt happy when I came back to school. I felt happy because I got to see my friends.

Hi, I am Kayra. My experience of remote learning is the work is fun. In remote learning I did Wacky Wednesday and I wore a backwards jacket! Something I liked about remote learning was Fun Friday because we had choices. I enjoyed how Mr. Kirk was when he did funny things! I enjoyed how Mrs. Buttigieg was being cheeky! My friends were what I missed most about school. I was surprised and nervous coming back to school, but I love being back.

Hi, my experience of remote learning was fun and excellent, but sad too. Sad be-cause I missed my friends a lot. I did Maths, writing, reading, integrated, iPad, art, Japanese and sport. I liked playing with my sister and seeing Mr. Kirk’s and Mrs. Buttigieg’s funny videos. I enjoyed Mr. Kirk’s songs and Mrs. Buttigieg’s mindfulness videos. I missed my friends. I feel great to be back at school because I feel excited. From Meera

Hi I am Ava. My remote learning was fun but I missed my friends. I liked spending time with my family. I liked writing stories. I wrote one about a dog and a cat fighting over a girl. I had trouble doing Maths at home because it was hard.

I was learning. I liked Maths and having a break. I enjoyed the songs with Mr. Kirk. I enjoyed Fun Thursday with Mrs. B. I missed my friends. I felt happy to see my friends when I got back. From Jakob.

Lilyann: Hi, remote learning was good to me, I liked it. I felt a little bit sad because I missed my friends, but overall I loved it. I did an information report about flamin-goes. I did Maths like addition and sub-traction. I liked learning about clocks and I like sport with Mrs. Myers. I like when Mr. Kirk gives us breaks in-between so we can give out brains a rest. I like when Mrs. Buttigieg sends us videos. I missed my friends and seeing my teachers. I feel happy to be back.

Grade 6 Team

This term, in Grade 6, we have been learning all

about the Government of Australia. We have

covered many aspects of our Government in-

cluding; Federation, the Constitution, democra-

cy and other forms of government, the three

levels of government (council, state and feder-

al) and how laws are made. Last week we took some laws through the bill pro-

cess, debating them and making amendments as if we were members of parlia-

ment, before they were signed by the Governor-General and officially became

Australian laws. This week, we learnt about the voting process for both the House of

Representatives and the Senate. The students made

advertisements, just like politicians, describing the rea-

sons their classmates should vote for them. We then

held a vote in the multipurpose room, with real voting

booths and voting slips, where each student learnt

about the voting process here in Australia. Some par-

ticularly remember having a sausage in bread when

going to vote with their parents. Congratulations to

our newly elected members of SHPS Parliament!

Reminders

We have had cases of head lice reported this term. We are asking all parents/carers to examine their children’s hair each week and especially during the school holidays and if head lice are found, to treat the hair appropriately before the children return to school in Term 3.

We currently have a large amount of lost property at both campuses. If your child has lost anything please check the box at your campus. All items with names will be sent back to the classroom. We would like to emphasise the importance of naming all items that your child brings to school so that we can return them if found.
