About Hillbrook
• Coed, independent, progressive JK-8 school in a quiet neighborhood in the Silicon Valley; 14 acres of natural space
• 315 students
• 1:1 iPads in grades 5-8
• Shared iPads and laptops all other grades
• Digital Arts lab; iLab
Part of Vision 2015: Be Innovative
Part of Motto: Take Risks (iPads, iLab)
Mission: Hillbrook provides an extraordinary educational experience that fosters a love of learning in our students and helps them develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to achieve their highest individual potential in school and in life. At Hillbrook, students are known, respected and valued as individuals and every day is a journey of self-discovery, imaginative thinking, creative problem solving, laughter, and friendship.
What got Hillbrook thinking about learning spaces?

Goals, Mobility, Space
Christina Pak, 7/8 grade history teacher: thoughts on how students are using space and relationship to mobility/iPads/laptops
Keep in Mind...
• Environment impacts behavior.
• Learning behaviors are changing because of technology (the student nomad...)
• Flexible learning spaces are being designed and installed in universities and some schools.
• How does the learning space space affect student engagement?
Goals/Overview
• History/Research on environment & learning
• Observations about mobility and learning
• Case study - Hillbrook/Bretford/Hero iLab
project
• Discussion
Thinking About Space
Tim Springer: Raising the questions(from http://edu20.bretford.com/thought-leaders)
What Kind of Spaces
Creative Spaces brainstorm: students and teachers gathered to talk about possible creative spaces
Framing the question
What do we do with bricks and mortar when the classroom is in the cloud?
How can learning spaces change to support new technologies and new learning?
What can we do to increase agility in learning spaces?
Key Concepts from Research
Learning is socialLearning is mobileLearning is multi-modal: Not either/or; it’s both-and;
cooperative, individual, guided, etc.
Learning needs contextLearning integrates technology
Conclusion - The Agile Learning Space
So...Learning spaces must be agile
adapt to different styles of both teaching and learning. Now and in the future
easy to change to meet different needs at different times
smart to accommodate technology - (power and data).
engaging - encourage and enable exploration - both content and context (knowledge & space)
different - non traditional. One size does not fit all

To think about
If you want to be an innovative, 21st century school that maximizes the technology and the shift in teacher and learning (from sage on the stage to collaboration; from content mastery to creative thinking and problem solving work); you have to think about environment.
Learning is situated. Where and with whom you learn is as important as what and how.
