Learning Task :

Spooning beans.

Description:

The child uses a spoon to move the beans from one bowl to another.

Learning task adapted from:

Child Care Center, Sultan Qaboos University.

Age group:

3-5 years.

Subject Strands:

Fine motor skills.

Subject Topic:

Spooning.

Background Information:

Fine-motor skills involves the ability to control the small muscles of the body and is usually defined as the ability to coordinate the action of the eyes and hands together in performing precise manipulative movements (eye-hand coordination). The early forerunners of fine-motor control appear to be the reflex grasp and

avoidance reactions that become integrated and refined with increasing age and experience.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Tool Society Uses: Manipulate, identify and describe different tools that society uses which is spoon.

-Being able to hold the spoon correctly and use it to move to beans.

Student Characteristics Accommodated:

-this activity is developmentally appropriate and can be adapted to the child development level.

-this activity provides the opportunity for the child to move the beans and put them on the next bowl.

Prerequisite Concepts, skills, Values:

-follows class routines for selecting, using and returning individual learning tasks.

-adopts class routines for obtaining teacher support to demonstrate learning tasks and to obtain

assistance .

Learning Theory and instructional Strategies:

-this activity meets the child needs of practicing the fine motor skills.

-this activity prepares the children for later academic skills such as: drawing and

writing (holding pencil and crayon) and it will strength the fine motor skills of the child.

-As Montessori said children learn best by doing, and this activity provide a real learning experience for them .

Introduction of the learning Task:

-show the child the location of the activity in the shelf.

-tell the child the name of the activity "Spooning

beans."

-take the learning task to an open space at a table.

-Demonstrate how to move the beans from the bowl to the other one using the spoon.

-allow the child to take over and move the beans using spoon.

-show the child how to tidy up the activity.

Checklist of Tray Items:

-Two bowls red and blue (one is full with beans).

-Spoon.

Preparation:

-bring two similar bowls in different colors and put amount of beans on one of them.

-bring spoon.

-keep the materials on tray.

Extension activities:

-Provide a small spoon and places one bean in each section of the ice cube tray.

-ask the child to move the beans ‘two at a time’ between the red and blue bowls.

- ask the child to use the right hand to move the beans to the left and the left hand to move the beans to the right.

Enrichment Activities:

-Use different kinds of spoons and objects such as: cotton ball, beads, and peas that will changes the level of activity and add more fun.

Assessment Techniques:

-observing the children while they're doing the activity.

-note that the child follows the correct steps to do the activity .

Evaluation rubric:

-avoids hand utensils; attempts to use hand utensil inappropriately.

-successfully begins to use the spoon 2 to 3 times appropriately.

-successfully uses the spoon 4 to 6 times appropriately.

-successfully uses the spoon with flexible manipulations.

Feedback Suggestion:

-please use the spoon to move the beans from one bowl to the other.

-hold the spoon so that the bean does not fall off.

-make sure that there are no beans on the tray between the two bowls.

-Can you move the beans with one hand placed behind your back?

-Which of your two hands needs more practice in moving the beans?
