By design, social media is internet-based and gives users quick electronic communication of content. Content includes personal information, documents, videos, and photos. Users engage with social media via computer, tablet or smartphone via web-based software or web application, often utilizing it for messaging.”

By 2006, anyone over the age of 13 with a valid email address could join Facebook. Today, Facebook is the world's largest social network, with more than 1 billion users worldwide”:

• Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass and launched in July 2006

• In August 2007 the hashtag debuts, first proposed by user @chrismessina

• “A hashtag—written with a # symbol—is used to index keywords or topics on Twitter. This function was created on Twitter, and allows people to easily follow topics they are interested in”

“Instagram is a photo and video-sharing social media application that was launched in 2010 by Kevin Systrom. The first prototype of Instagram was a web app called Burbn, which was inspired by Systrom's love of fine whiskeys and bourbons.”:

• 73% of U.S. teens say Instagram is the best way for brands to reach them about new products or promotions

“Snapchat is a popular messaging app that lets users exchange pictures and videos (called snaps) that are meant to disappear after they're viewed. It's advertised as a "new type of camera" because the essential function is to take a picture or video, add filters, lenses or other effects and share them with friends”:

• Snapchat was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown when they were students at Stanford University.

• 69% of U.S. teens say they use Snapchat

• 30% of internet users aged 26–35 use Snapchat

“Tik Tok (formerly known as musical.ly) is a social media platform for creating, sharing and discovering short music videos, think Karaoke for the digital age. The app musical.ly was used by young people as an outlet to express themselves through singing, dancing, comedy, and lip-syncing. The app is now called Tik Tok, complete with a new logo, has all of the same features as musical.ly and allows users to create videos recorded in 15 seconds or less and share them across a community”:

• Almost 70 percent of TikTok users are between 16 to 24 years old, which means that only 30 percent are 25+ years old.

• In 2016, TikTok started as a Chinese project called Douyin, which is still the Chinese name of the appSome famous Tik Tok.

• TikTok is a learning platform, meaning the A.I. tracks what you have liked and commented on, clicked, or watched multiple times, and then puts more similar content in front of you

• Using different types of social media can spread the voice of God to younger generations who constantly use these means of communications daily

• Advancements in social media requires us to expand our traditional ways of communicating, while always keeping God's word at the center.

• If our goal is to exalt the Savior by equipping the saints to evangelize the lost, how can we do that if we never take the time to learn about how the young people are communicating?

Thank you for taking the time to read this introduction to social media. I hope it sheds some light on why and how we must proactively begin to

embrace different ways to reach a broader audience, while keeping those values instilled from God with us every step of the way.
