3ª READING. SPORTS SCHOOL.

Every summer, the State University of New York (SUNY) in the USA organizes a

sports school. Young people from five to eighteen years old stay at the university for a

week. They haven’t got lessons -they play sports in the morning and in the afternoon.

They also make new friends and have a good time!

The sports school doesn’t offer every sport –it offers seven different courses: baseball,

basketball, hockey, gymnastics, American football, volleyball and wrestling (lucha).

A typical day for a student on basketball course is:

7.45-8.30 a.m. Has breakfast

9.00-11.30 a.m. trains

12.00-1.00 p.m. Has lunch

looking in the mirror. The old man isn’t looking in the mirror. He is reading a

newspaper. Both men are wearing causal clothes. The young man is wearing a grey T-

shirt and green trousers. The old man is wearing a white T-shirt, grey shorts and black

shoes. He is wearing glasses, too.

A cheetah can run at 100 kilometres per hour.

A polar bear can swim 150 kilometres in one day.

A cobra can kill when it’s only five minutes old.

A raft spider can kill fish.

Imagine:

You are on a boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is hot and sunny. There isn’t a

cloud in the sky.

You go down into the water in a special submarine. At 20 metres underwater, it is

warm. There are some plants and some fish. At 1000 metres under water, it is cold and

dark. At 2000 metres underwater, you are on the ocean floor. It is very, very cold. There

aren’t any plants. But incredibly there are some animals here.

There are some holes in the floor of the Pacific Ocean. Very hot water (400 ºC) comes

out of the holes, and some amazing animals live there. There is a special type of worm

and there are some snails, too. Sometimes, the worms are three metres long. The snails

haven’t got any eyes, but they have got hair!

he was only at Harvard for two years. Now, he has got his own computer company

(Microsoft) and a personal fortune of more than $ 36,000,000,000!

Picasso was a great artist. At school, he wasn’t very good at Maths or Science, but he

was brilliant at Art. At the age of fifteen, he was a student at the School of fine Arts in

Barcelona. The entrance exam for the School of Fine Arts was very difficult. For most

students, it was a month’s work. But it wasn’t a month’s work for Picasso. It was only a

day’s work!

Every year we celebrate festivals, for example, Christmas and Halloween. Normally, we

have special food. In the UK, people eat turkey at Christmas.

In the past, people celebrated festivals, too. And they cooked special food.

The Ancient Egyptians lived 3,500 years ago in Egypt. They celebrated their festivals

with enormous feasts. They cooked fish, beef and chicken. They served fruit, too. The

servants carried jars of wine on their heads. People played music and danced.

The Aztecs lived 400 years ago in Mexico. They celebrated their festivals, with feasts,

too. They served a chocolate drink. And they served very interesting food! They cooked

a special type of pancake. These pancakes contained snails, insect eggs and worms!
