PETROLEUM HISTORY

PETROLEUM & GAS EXPLORATION

Page 2: Lecture 02

Petroleum History Oil used since ancient times, both for

lighting and medicine and by the Greeks even for warfare.

In 1859 at Oil Creek near Titusville in West Pennsylvania an oil well was drilled about 25 m deep which produced 8-10 bbl./days

PETROLEUM HISTORY in PAKISTAN Onshore

First exploratory well drilled by the Punjab Government near an oil seapage at Kundal (khisor Range, KPK in 1866, just seven years after the world’s pioneer well in Pennsylvania (USA) drilled by Col. Drake.

Similarly in 1885 – 1892, thirteen wells were drilled near Khattan oil seepage (south east of Quetta) produced about 25000 bbl of oil.

Rules and Regulations

First government PPR was issued in 1949. Thereafter BOC & AOC established PPL & POL In 1952 first maiden discovery on the Sui

Structure (Indus Basin) was done by PPL in Sui Main Limestone of Early Eocene age. Gas reserves estimated were 8.6 TCF= 1 Billion bbl of oil.

Further Exploration During 1956-59, thirty five exploratory wells

were drilled and this could be described as a period of extensive exploration in Pakistan.

In 1960’s Shard decline was noticed. Why? In 1965 OGDC first successful discovery was

made (Sari Singh, Sindh followed by TOOT (Potowar, Punjab), Rodho ( Punjab 1972), Kothar ( Sindh, 1973), Dodhak (Punjab, 1977)….

Further Exploration First Natural Gas discovery in Punjab was

done by OGDC ( Nandpur 1984) ( Punjpir 1985) in Jurassic/ Cretaceous reservoirs.

LASMO made a gas discovery in Lower Goru Sandstone ( Cretaceous) at Kadanwari, south of Khairpur, Jacababad, PPL’s Kandhkot Gas Field (1959)

PETROLEUM HISTORY Offshore

Exploration in the Indus offshore started in 1961 ( Sun Oil Company) three nearshore wells

Wintershall conducted 9400 km’s of 24 fold seismic survey (1969) drilled three wells

Philips petroleum Husky (USA) one well, Karachi south A-1

(1978)

PETROLEUM HISTORY 7 offshore wells, till 1978 In movable HCS

Unfortunate in offshore drillingDue to various reasons

Abnormal Pressure Irregular Temperature Immaturities

Summary Total wells 301 (Exploratory) since 1866 till

1992 290 Onshore 11 OffshorePakistan, one of less explored basins

Five wells / 10000 km2 (Pakistan) Twelve wells / 10000 km2 ( World Average)

Page 12: Lecture 02

Pakistan resulted in discovery of about 500 Mbbls of oil

31 Tcf of gas Untill 1993 In 1989, government of Pakistan

introduced the block/bidding system, 43 blocks were offered internationally
