Definition:
• Reinforced concrete is concrete in which reinforcement bars ("rebars"), reinforcement grids, plates or fibers have been incorporated to strengthen the concrete in tension.
• It was invented by French gardener Joseph Monier in 1849 and patented in 1867.
• Prior to the invention of reinforcement, concrete was strong in compression, but weak in tension.

Composite action:
• All reinforced concrete structures are designed on the assumption that the concrete does not resist any tensile forces.
• Steel reinforcement is designed to resist these forces.
• The force is transferred by bond between the interface of the two materials.
• The coefficients of thermal expansion for steel and for concrete are sufficiently close ( 10x10e-6 & 7-12x10e-6 / Co ) to avoid problems from differential expansion between the two materials over normal temperature ranges
