Fiberglass composition(3/3)
FHydrolitic resistance- Insulation glass fibers have to be resistant at pH ≈ 7 (normal condition in use) AND soluble at pH ≈ 4, because this is the pH of macrophages present in lung alveoles. This solubility is called biosolubility. It garantees that inhaled fibers (with diameter below 1 µm) do not make anydammage of the kind that abestos fibers do.Al2O3 and NaO contains result from these considerations.

Reminder : thermal transfer(1/6)
FThere are three modes of thermal transfer:- Conduction- Convection- Radiation
FCoefficient of thermal transfer across a glazing (in winter):Thermal flux :
Using double-glazing decreases ho and ht. We are left with hi to decrease. hi is mainly a radiation term. It accounts for the radiative energy exchange between the inside glass surface and the rest of the room.

Reminder : thermal transfer(2/6)
FRadiative transferIt works with emission and reception of electromagnetic
waves between bodiesWhen a body is submitted to an electromagnetic
radiation of wavelength λ, it transmits a part of it, reflects a part of it, and absorbs a part of it. One has :
FBlack bodyThe black body is an ideal model body which
completely absorbs the radiative energy that it receives : A(λ)=1, ∀λ.
In other words, the only radiation coming from a B.B. is the radiation that it emits, and it depends only on its temperature θ.
2. High performance thermal insulating glazing
. T(λ) + R (λ) + A(λ) = 1
![Page 18: Lecture 1: Glass and energy · 2020. 7. 29. · Agenda : Glass for energy saving in buildings 1.Glasswool 2.High performance thermal insulating glazing 3.Smart windows Glass for the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022071516/6138c8170ad5d20676497877/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
h : Planck’s constantk : Boltzmann’s constant c : light velocity
Reminder : thermal transfer(3/6)
FPlanck’s lawAt temperature θ, and in the wavelength interval [λ, λ+dλ], the
energy flux emitted per unit area by a B.B. is given by
FWien’s lawFor every temperature θ, there is a wavelength λm for which the
radiated energy flux is maximum :
λm . θ = b with b = 2,9 · 10-3 m.K
2. High performance thermal insulating glazing
![Page 19: Lecture 1: Glass and energy · 2020. 7. 29. · Agenda : Glass for energy saving in buildings 1.Glasswool 2.High performance thermal insulating glazing 3.Smart windows Glass for the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022071516/6138c8170ad5d20676497877/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Reminder : thermal transfer(4/6)
2. High performance thermal insulating glazing
FStephan-Boltzmann’s lawThe total energy flux emitted per unit area by a B.B. at temperature θ is given by Φ = σ θ4, with :
= 5,7 · 108 W · m-2 · K-4
![Page 20: Lecture 1: Glass and energy · 2020. 7. 29. · Agenda : Glass for energy saving in buildings 1.Glasswool 2.High performance thermal insulating glazing 3.Smart windows Glass for the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022071516/6138c8170ad5d20676497877/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
FDefinition of emissivity :
- At a given temperature θ, a given body emits its own radiation E*(λ) , and it absorbs a part A(λ) of the radiation E(λ) that it receives. At thermal equilibrium :
E*(λ) = A(λ) E(λ) ; it is Kirchhoff’s law
- For a B.B. : A(λ) = 1, and E*BB(λ) = E(λ).
- The emissivity ε(λ) of a given body is defined by :ε(λ) = E*(λ) / E*BB(λ)
- Thus, at thermal equilibrium ε(λ) = A(λ)
- In particular, for a transparent body, ε(λ) = 0for a non-transparent body, ε(λ) = 1 – R(λ)for a black body, ε(λ) = 1

F Sommerfeld’s and Drude’s models- Sommerfeld’s model is partly quantum mechanical- Sommerfeld’s model uses Fermi-Dirac energy distribution instead of
Boltzmann’s distribution- In Sommerfeld’s model dc and ac conductivity and optical properties
writes in the same way than in Drude’s model, e.g. , but the meaning is different.
- In particular, τ is that τ of electrons located at the Fermi level.
FMatthiessen’s rule- If there are several collision processes, characterized by scattering times τ1, τ2, τ3, … , the the effective τ is given by :
- the same holds for the electron mean free path Λ defined by Λ=vFτ (vF isthe Fermi velocity):
and for the electron mobility μ:

F For metals, 1/τ << ωIR < ωvis. < ωpWe are in the intermediate regime
FWhat can we expect from metal films ?If thin enough (thickness d not very large compared with ep), a metal film is partly transparent.By chance, would we get Tvis>>TIR and RIR<<Rvis ?
FWould such a frequencydependence of T come from ep ?No, because ep=c/ωp isalmost independant of ω.

• Energy represents a very promising future for glass
• Thin film science and technology is part of glass science and technology
• There is another important aspect of relation between energy and glass : energy used for making lass. Melting and fining of glass require a lot of energy. This has to be improved rapidly.
