TRANSCRIPT

  • Trados Studio. Translation Memory.Marchitan Irina, senior lecturer, Dep.Translation, Interpreting and Applied Linguistics

  • Basic termsSegment and segmentationTranslation unitTranslation memory100% coincidence/partial coincidence

  • Segment and segmentationSegment can be a word, a syntagm, a sentence.

  • Segmentation Rules (SR)SR rules observed by Trados to identify the end of the segmentSentence based segmentation punctuation marks (. ? ! :)Paragraph based segmentation the end of paragraph

  • Translation unit (TU)Translation unit a pair of segments Source language + Target language

  • Translation memory (TM)TMs are databases that store source sentences and their translations as segment pairs. Memoria de traducere baza de date ce conine uniti de traducere

  • 100% or partial coincidence100% or partial coincidence is the rate of coincidence between a new segmentand a translation unitstored in translation memory

  • Types of translation memoriesThere are 3 types of TM in SDL Trados 2009:

    Server-based TMFile-based TM Project-based TM

  • Server-based TM (remote)

Placed on server computer in a network. Can be accesed via local network or Internet.

  • File-based TM (local)

Is created by the user on personal computer. Other users cannot access such a TM unless there is a network between computers. (in this case it becomes server-based TM)

  • Project-based TM

Is created for a certain project and distributed together with the project files.

It includes file-based and server-based TM suitable for the project domain/topic.

  • CREATING A TRANSLATION MEMORY 1. Launch Trados Studio 2009.2. Select New Translation Memory or use shortcut - (Alt + Shift + N)

  • 3. Give name, select location and SL/TL

  • Rules for naming

  • Basic settings

  • If you select the opion Enable caracter-based concordance search the process of searching segments with partial coincidence will take much time and the number of sentences that contain the searched word, e.g. (masa) will be a big one and not always useful. There will be shown all words that contain this combination of letters.

    Masa, masaj, ramasag, rmasa etc.

  • Identification of elements that do not require translation

  • Linguistic resourses

  • Variable list text elements that remain unchanged, such as proper names. They can be inserted by the translator.Abbreviations are the most frequently used abbreviations in a selected language.

  • Ordinal follower list.Ordinal followers are words which normally follow numbers in text.Because a full stop usually indicates the end of a sentence, having full stops in the middle of the sentence text could result in text being incorrectly.

  • This option is not relevant for all languages. But in case of German dates ordinals are followed by a full stop - 1. September. So if the names of months are not in the ordinal followers the end of the segment will not be identified correctly.

  • Segmentation Rules (SR)SR rules observed by Trados to identify the end of the segmentSentence based segmentation punctuation marks (. ? ! :)Paragraph based segmentation the end of paragraph

  • Sentence based segmentation rules are disabled

  • TM does not contain Translation Units

  • Importing data into TMSelect menu File Import.

  • Select TM files to be imported

  • If you select scenario:No 1. TU will be imported without formattingNo 2. TU that do not coincide with the SL/TL variant (British/American EN) will not be importedNo 3. TU that contain errors will also be imported

  • The import process is finished and once you press Close The TM with imported TU is shown
