Preface
These proceedings contain the papers presented at ECIR 2018, the 40th EuropeanConference on Information Retrieval. The conference is organized by the Laboratoired’Informatique de Grenoble (LIG), in cooperation with the Information RetrievalSpecialist Group of the British Computer Society (BCS-IRSG). It was supported by theSpecial Interest Group on Information Retrieval (ACM SIGIR), and the FrenchAssociation of Information Retrieval (ARIA).
ECIR 2018 received 171 full paper and 112 short paper submissions. All submittedpapers were reviewed by at least three members of the international Program Com-mittee. In all, 39 full papers (23%) were accepted for oral presentation and 39 shortpapers (35%) were accepted for poster presentation. The accepted papers come fromuniversities, research institutes, and/or commercial organizations. The traditional strongfocus on students was maintained with a student mentoring program and a student grantprogram.
Accepted papers cover the state of the art in information retrieval including topicssuch as: topic modeling, deep learning, evaluation, user behavior, document repre-sentation, recommendation systems, retrieval methods, learning and classification, andmicro-blogs.
The success of such a conference is made possible only by the huge effort of severalpeople and organizations. We wish to thank our various committees – for full papers, short papers, demonstrations, tutorials, workshops and awards – for their hard workensuring the quality of the ECIR 2018 program. We thank the researchers who sub-mitted their work. We also wish to thank the student mentoring chairs, the student grantchairs, the sponsor chairs, the publicity chairs, the proceedings chairs, the industry daychairs, and the website chair.
We thank our sponsoring institutions, Naver Labs, Google, Université GrenobleAlpes, Grenoble INP, Grenoble Alpes Data Institute, Grenoble Alpes Métropole, LabexPersyval, ARIA, SIGIR, and Springer for their support of ECIR 2018. We are alsograteful to our three keynote speakers.
Our final thanks are for the members of the local Organizing Committee for theirhard work over many months and to the local and student volunteers who contributedto a smooth running of ECIR 2018.
