Preface

This volume contains a selection of the best papers from the workshops thatwere held at the 8th Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2011), heldduring May 29–30, 2011, in Heraklion, Greece. ESWC conferences present thelatest results in research and applications of Semantic Web technologies, and theworkshops co-located with them are distinguished meeting points for discussingongoing work and the latest ideas in the Semantic Web field.

The Workshop Chairs selected 11 workshops, focusing on specific researchissues related to the Semantic Web. The workshops were organized by interna-tional experts in the respective fields and each workshop set up an internationalProgram Committee that carefully selected the workshop contributions.

– First International Workshop on eLearning Approaches for the Linked DataAge (Linked Learning 2011)

– First Workshop on High-Performance Computing for the Semantic Web(HPCSW 2011)

– Third International Workshop on Inductive Reasoning and Machine Learn-ing for the Semantic Web (IRMLES 2011)

– First Workshop on Making Sense of Microposts (#MSM2011)– First Workshop on Ontology and Semantic Web for Manufacturing (OSEMA

2011)– First Workshop on Question Answering over Linked Data (QALD-1)– 4th International Workshop on REsource Discovery (RED 2011)– 6th International Workshop on Semantic Business Process Management (BPM

2011)– First Workshop on Semantic Publications (SePublica 2011)– First Workshop on Semantics in Governance and Policy Modelling (SGPM

2011)– First International Workshop on User Profile Data on the Social Semantic

Web (UWeb 2011)

The workshop selection reflects the international and interdisciplinary scopeof the ESWC conferences, covering:

– Advances in Semantic Web technologies through cross-fertilization with otherfields: parallel data processing and high-performance computing (HPCSW2011), knowledge discovery and machine learning (IRMLES 2011), questionanswering (QALD-1), and resource discovery (RED 2011)

– Consolidation of the social Semantic Web through micropost (#MSM2011)and user data (UWeb 2011) exploitation.

VI Preface

– Application of Semantic Web technologies to other fields: eLearning (LinkedLearning 2011), Business Process Modelling (BPM 2011), and Governanceand Policy Modelling (SGPM 2011)

– Industrial application of Semantic Web technologies: manufacturing (OS-EMA 2011) and publishing (SePublica 2011).

From the 75 papers that were accepted for these workshops, a selection hasbeen included in this volume. Each workshop Organizing Committee evaluatedthe papers accepted in their workshop to propose those to be included in thisvolume. Then, the authors of each proposed paper improved their papers, takinginto account the comments and feedback obtained during the conference. Finally, the ESWC Workshop, Program Committee and Conference Chairs made thefinal decision on inclusion, based on the paper improvements from the workshopversion. As a result, 22 papers were selected for this volume.

Special thanks go to all the workshop organizers and their respective ProgramCommittees, who contributed to making ESWC 2011 a real success. We wouldalso like to thank the ESWC 2011 Organizing Committee and specially the localorganizers and the Program Chairs for supporting the day-to-day operation ofthe workshops and the selection of papers, respectively.
