National Volunteer Week—April 15-22

This contest is an opportunity for you to demonstrate through posters or power point how to do something in your project. It is open to youth ages 10-18. Competition is Thursday, March 8th, 6:00 p.m. at the 4-H Office. A list of approved categories and guidelines are available at our office.
If you are preparing a PowerPoint presentation, please email to [email protected] so we can ensure it is compatible with our computer. Also, plan to bring it on a jump drive to the contest. Pre-register by calling in with your topic and
category by March 7th.

Junior 4-H’ers ages 8-13 may participate in County Contests on Thursday, April 5th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the 4-H Office. Those ages 10-13, who qualify, may advance to District Project Achievement Day at ICC on June 16. Call the 4-H Office to pre-register. Contest areas:

digital categories. Rules are available at the 4-H office.
Cloverleaf (ages 5-7) may participate on the county level. Winners in Junior and Senior divisions will advance to DPAD and Club Congress. Photos are due to the Lee
County 4-H Office by May 9th.
4-H’ers ages 5-9 can share something they’ve learned Thursday, April 12th, 5:30 p.m. at the 4-H Office. Ages 8 and 9 can advance to District Project Achievement Day in June. Call to pre-register.

Both of these events will be held Tuesday, April 10, 6:00 p.m. at the Magnolia Building of the Agri-Center in Verona.
Completed entry forms for both events are due in the 4-H Office by 5:00 on Friday, April 6.

Mississippi 4-H is again offering 2016-2017 4-H Scholarship opportunities. Applications may be picked up at the 4-H Office or may be found at: http://extension.msstate.edu/scholarships-for-4-h
All applications are due State 4-H Office by 5:00 p.m.
on March 31. (Note: This is NOT a postmark date).
The Cloverbud Club for ages 5-7 will meet March 20 and April 17 at 4:00 p.m. at the 4-H office. Please call the 4-H office at 841-9000 if you plan to attend.

Winners in the Junior and Senior divisions will proceed to the district and/or state level.
4-H’ers ages 8-18 interested in participating in the North Half Cookout Contest should call the 4-H Office to sign up. The contest date is June 6 in Winona.
Mr. Brandon will schedule a hands-on workshop for those interested to help them prepare for the North Half Contest.

Older 4-H’er News
Congratulations to 4-H’ers chosen to be 2018 Lee County Ambassadors.
State Officer Candidates
Senior 4-H’ers interesting to run for a state office, they must notify the Lee County 4-H Office by March 9th. State Offices include president, vice-president, secretary, parliamentarian, reporter, song leader and northeast district vice-president. Once a list is compiled of all interested in running, County interviews will be held March 19th from 3:30-6:30 (15 minute appointments) to determine who will be selected to represent Lee County during State elections. They should bring a cover letter, 4-H Resume’ and a candidate half page document which briefly covers their 4-H experience, education and extracurricular activities. It is important they call the 4-H Office and sign-up for an interview appointment. 4-H’ers selected from the interviews to run for State office will be given instructions for completing the State 4-H application.
State Ambassador and National 4-H Conference
Seniors 15– 18 are eligible to apply for these opportunities. For more information on the application process and requirements, email us at [email protected].

Mississippi State University Opportunities
Spring Preview Days will take place March 19 and March 26 at MSU in Starkville. These events are designed to assist high school juniors in their college. Website—www.admissions.msstate.edu/events/spring-preview-day/
The Rural Medical Scholars Program is an opportunity for high school juniors to learn more about careers as Family Practice physicians. The program will be July 7-August 3 at MSU. Applications can be found at: extension.msstate.edu/RMS. Applications are due to MSU by March 30th.

Aggies Lee County Aggies had great District and Dixie National Livestock Shows. Aggies will meet Tuesday, March 6 and April 10 at 6:00 p.m. at the 4-H Office.
Junior Livestock judging will be held in conjunction with Senior Livestock Judging on May 19th at MSU. Livestock Judging practice will begin in April. Dates to be announced at the March 6 meeting. 4-H’er ages 8-18 may participate.
The MS 4-H Dairy Judging Contest will be Friday, April 6 at MSU. The contest is open to Junior and Senior 4-H teams and individuals. This will serve as the state qualifying contest for the senior winning team to represent Mississippi 4-H at the national level in November, 2018 Practice dates will be announced at the March 6 meeting.
LEE COUNTY LIVESTOCK CLASSIC—September 21 and 22
Poultry Chain Anyone interested in participating in the 2018 Poultry Chain will meet Tuesday, March 6 (following the Aggies Club meeting at 6:00 p.m.). Registration packets and information on ordering chicks will be discussed.
Ropes and Reins Ropes & Reins will meet Monday, March 19 and April 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office.
District Horse Show—June 7-9 in Verona State Horse Show—June 19-23 in Jackson
It is time to start preparing for District and State Horse Show competitions. Horse bowl, Hippology and Horse Judging teams will begin practicing weekly. We will also start working on individual and team demos. If you would like to participate, contact Amanda Repult.
HORSE ENTRIES WILL BE TAKEN DURING THE MARCH ROPES & REINS MEETING. * Deadline: May 1st Horse ownership papers if you plan to exhibit a horse in District/State 4-H Horse Shows.
