“Lee is a pleasure to work with. Inventive, thoughtful, instinctive. He works brilliantly to brief but is never afraid to demonstrate his extensive creative flair. He has strong ideas but is also flexible and collaborative and he always exceeded my ambitions for the design of the projects. He is also fantastic at working to incredibly tight deadlines without ever letting the quality slip. I couldn’t recommend him highly enough.”
Claire Parker, Kudos Film and Television
“I’ve worked with a lot of designers and seldom if ever come across one who can match Lee’s combination of talent and adaptability. His ideas are brilliant, sparkling, and he has an uncanny ability to interpret exactly what is required almost before you have given him the brief. At the same time he is always open to suggestion and happy to make whatever changes are required. He will bust a gut to meet deadlines – plus he is a dab hand with snappy copy, too. I would use him for all my work if I could!”
Sally Partington, Simon & Schuster
“Lee is an incredibly talented designer and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him. Innovative, easygoing, knowledgeable, more than able to stick to deadlines (hurrah!) and packed full of thoroughly original and interesting ideas, he is a commissioning editor’s dream. Give him work immediately (but not too much, I’ll be needing him to do lots more books for me!).”

THE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES,
the world’s most famous detective, have been extensively chronicled
by his companion and assistant throughout many of his most
intriguing cases, Dr John H Watson.
Watson’s enthralling accounts of Holmes’s endeavours were based
on the copious notes he took during the investigations and the evidence
that he and Holmes gathered. These Case notes, therefore, take the
form of a scrapbook, fastidiously maintained by Watson, that provides
a unique perspective on Holmes’s work and methods of detection.
the cases covered in
THE CASE NOTES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES are:
a The Hound of the Baskervilles a
a A Scandal in Bohemia a
a The Red-Headed League a
a The Boscombe Valley Mystery a
a The Dancing Men aa The Final Problem a
For those familiar with the investigations covered in this volume, the
notes, letters, official documents, artefacts and items of evidence will add
a compelling new dimension to each case. For those who have not studied
Watson’s reports before, The Case notes are an excellent way to examine
all of the crimes featured, and even review crucial items of evidence
first hand. Watson’s notes and comments, along with photographs and
illustrations, amount to 64 pages, with a separate
section devoted to each case.
Carefully filed in special evidence bags secured within the pages of THE CASE NOTES
are no less than 18 items that include:
a A photograph of the only woman ever to outwit Holmes a
a The signed confession of a murderer a
a A chilling letter predicting Sir Henry Baskerville’s demise a
a The scrap of paper that broke the ‘Dancing Men’ code a
a A newspaper report about one of Holmes’s cleverest adversaries a
a The final note Holmes left for Watson before facing a fight to the death with the
evil Professor Moriarty! a

Sherlock Holmes seemed delighted at the idea of sharing his rooms with me. “I have my eye on a suite in Baker Street,” he said, “which would suit us down to the ground. You don’t mind the smell of strong tobacco, I hope?”“I always smoke ‘ship’s’ myself,” I answered.“That’s good enough. I generally have chemicals about, and occasionally do experiments. Would that annoy you?”“By no means.”
“Let me see -- what are my other shortcomings? I get in the dumps at times, and don’t open my mouth for days on end. You must not think I am sulky when I do that. Just let me alone, and I’ll soon be right. What have you to confess now? It’s just as well for two fellows to know the worst of one another before they begin to live together.”
I laughed at this cross-examination. “I keep a bull pup,” I said, “and I object to rows because my nerves are shaken, and I get up at all sorts of ungodly hours, and I am extremely lazy. I have another set of vices when I’m well, but those are the principal ones at present.”“Do you include violin playing in your category of rows?” he asked, anxiously.“It depends on the player,” I answered. “A well-played violin is a treat for the gods -- a badly played one --”“Oh, that’s all right,” he cried, with a merry laugh. “I think we may consider the thing as settled -- that is if the rooms are agreeable to you.”

Holmes on Modesty: “I cannot agree with those who rank modesty among the virtues. To the logician all things should be seen exactly as they are, and to underestimate one’s self is as much a departure from truth as to exaggerate one’s own powers.”

Dear Mr. Holmes,
I am writing to you as a desperate man, hopeful that you may be able to help in the matter of my beloved wife. Let me first admit that I am far from rich, though my family has resided here at Riding Thorpe in Norfolk for five centuries. I met Elsie, a young American lady, last year while visiting town for the Jubilee. You will think it mad when I tell you that I was to be married to this woman - of whom I knew not one jot of history - only one month later. If you were to meet her then you would understand, she is a woman of singular beauty. She was most honest with me,
,,I have
had some disagreeable associations in my life,,, she
would say, insistent that she had nothing in herself to be ashamed of but that she would nonetheless not countenance enquiries into her past. I was to take her as a blank slate or not at all. A year passed and we were blissfully happy but then, at the end of June, came the arrival of a letter from America. I have no idea as to its contents (I noted the stamp before it were burnt in the fire but no more) and have not asked, though Elsie would do well to
trust me I am a man of my word and I haven,t forced an enquiry. Since that letter she has known no rest, she is fearful I am sure of it. Then, matters turn queer, Tuesday of last week I came upon the attached line of dancing figures scrawled in chalk on one of the window-sills. On mentioning it to my wife she became deeply distressed and insisted I let see anymore that might appear. For a week none did and then, yesterday morning I found the accompanying piece of paper. I showed it to Elsie and she fainted clean away. Clearly this is not a matter that I can allow to continue, I have no idea what these curious figures might mean but mean to do whatever I can to find out. I shall call on you tomorrow morning so that we might discuss your initial suspicions.
Yours Faithfully,
Hilton Cubitt
That last message was to be repeated, this time on a scrap of paper found by the sun dial. Cubitt, by now quite beside himself over the curious affair, resolved to lie in wait by the window, revolver in hand, determined to catch the elusive scribbler. His wife was quite beside herself at the notion and begged him to reconsider. He would not do so. Upon spotting a figure in the moonlight, Elsie Cubitt fought to stop her husband from challenging the man. Mr. Cubitt was delayed long enough for the stranger to vanish but not before he left yet one more sequence of dancing figures:
The Third Message drawn upon the black wooden door of the Tool House
After the third message was rubbed out this fourth line of hieroglyphics appeared in the same place
the dancing menWednesday, July 27th to August 10 th and Saturday, August 13th, 1898
The first appearance of the mysterious ‘dancing men’, copied from the note supplied by its discoverer, Mr Hilton Cubitt
Holmes had once written a monograph on decrypting cyphers, so took a great interest in what appeared to be a coded message
further figures have been found. i shall arriveat liverpool st 1:20 and hasten towards yourrooms as soon as possible thereafter.

Mark Twain has been criticised for his use of the term “Robot” to describe the mechanically created people who worked as unpaid drudges. Some MechPeople regard the term as off ensive. Other MechPeople, like myself, see it as important to understand the world in which our ancestors lived and toiled. And this telling of Huckleberry Finn and of Robot Jim and his quest for Freedom speaks to all of us: human and mechanical.
- NEIL GAIMAN Author of “American Gods” and noted MechPerson
How do you challenge a wrong-headed bowdlerization of a great novel? Diani’s & Devine’s response is inspired: suggest an even more preposterous one. In the spirit of some of the over-the-top satire in which Twain himself occasionally indulged,
the Robotic Huck Finn is designed to get readers to see why “improving” the words of a writer as careful as Twain is such terrible idea.
- SHELLEY FISHER FISHKINJoseph S. Atha Professor of Humanities and Professor of English, Stanford University
Huckleberry Finn was boy with no home. Jim was a runaway robot in search of freedom. Together they embarked upon the adventure of a lifetime.
Mark Twain’s classic text has been a lightning rod for controversy since its fi rst publication in the late nineteenth century, and has consistently been one of the
most banned books in schools and libraries across the United States. In an eff ort to fi ght the censorship of this iconic piece of literature, editors Gabriel
Diani and Etta Devine have removed every instance of the word “n-word” and replaced it with the word “robot.” Complete and unabridged (except for bits here and there), with E.W. Kemble’s original illustrations painstakingly altered by artist
Denise Devine to include robots, this bold new edition makes Twain’s timeless work accessible to a whole new generation of readers … without being bogged down by
what he wanted to say about racism.
