The 2010 garden, with itsunforgettable lock gates and canalcentrepiece, delivered a first-evergold medal in eight attempts aswell as being the first time agarden produced by a localauthority had ever scooped goldin the elite large outdoor showgarden category.

And to prove that was no fluke, the team made up of Leeds CityCouncil’s parks and countrysideservice working together withLeeds-based world-leadingmanufacturers of products used incivil engineering HESCO BastionLimited, who fully funded theproject, repeated the feat this year.

The HESCO Garden 2011 wasbased on showcasing the role ofwater power both in Leeds’industrial past but also as arenewable energy source of thefuture. The centrepiece was atraditional mill and working waterwheel measuring 11 feet tall thatpumped water around the garden.

Sean Flesher, Leeds City Council’shead of parks and countrysidesaid: “After finally reaching goldlast year, we were all determinedto prove it was not a one-off andthat we could do it again. Thisyear’s design was anotherambitious project but we hadconfidence in what we were doing

and the result was another superbgarden which impressed all whosaw it.”

Both the gold medal-winningHESCO Garden 2010 and TheHESCO Garden from 2009 cannow be visited for free in theirnew permanent home at the‘Gardens of the World’ section ofRoundhay Park.

LeedsCard asks, how did thebrothers get into such a tough sport?

Alistair Brownlee (AB): “Westarted swimming really youngat Aireborough Leisure Centre,Mum was quite into swimming. Then I started running and didthe Leeds Schools CrossCountry. I also rode my bikewith my dad and then at somepoint came across triathlon. I had an uncle who did it and decided to give it ago aged 10 or 11 and it went onfrom there really.”

Jonathan Brownlee (JB): “I gotinto it the same as Alistair, justtwo years earlier. When Alistairstarted swimming for Leeds Iremember I was too young butthe coach let me join in. It wasso hard but it was good for meand then I started triathlonwhen I was about nine or 10, sowe started really young.”

The level of training anddedication required to be aworld-class triathlete is enoughto make even the most ardentgym-goer wince. Can you tell usabout your regimes?

(AB): “We do about 30 to 35hours a week. We swim fivetimes, run nine times and bikeseven times. We also do twogyms sessions and then a physiosession, so lots of training.”

“On top of that we compete all over the world and we’reboth studying. I’m at LeedsMetropolitan University andJonathan is at the University of Leeds.”

With so little free time what doyou do when you’re not trainingor studying?

(JB): “We normally doabsolutely nothing because we travel so much.”

(AB): “When I’m not actuallytraining I just like to rest. But atthe end of the season I alwayshave two or three weeks off torest and go on holiday andenjoy things I can’t do the restof the season, just live a bitmore of a normal life.”

You’re both obviously veryfocused – what is the ultimateprize for you?

(AB): “The Olympics.”

(JB): “Also the Olympics, I’d liketo get top three, that would begreat, then maybe move on tomarathon running as well.”

What advice can you offeranyone thinking of taking upthe triathlon?

(AB): “If you want to find a racego to the British Triathlonwebsite. Just give it a go if youlike a challenge, anyone can do it.”

(JB): “Anyone can do it, you can have races as short as youlike, some are 300m swim, 10k bike, 3k run.”
