Do you know King Leopold II? No? I will tell you something more about him, because he gave the order to built the basilica.

Leopold II was the second king of Belgium. He was fascinated by the basilica of the Sacred Heart in Paris. Because he liked it so much, he wanted to built a similar building on the Koekelberg plateau. The basilica is the fifth biggest church in the world.

Before you start your walk, it’s important that you know something about the history of the basilica. In the following exercise, you will see a text with missing words. This words can be found in the box. You have to fill in the words in the sentences.

Good luck!

I think you already heard something about this art style. Probably some of you can tell something about it. But for those who don’t know the meaning of “art-deco”, I will explain it with the following tasks:

Go outside or if you are already outside, go to a place where you can see the whole basilica.

Now you are outside, take your time to observe the basilica. Make a tour around it. In the art deco style, you can recognize other art styles. You will find some of

Inside the basilica we can also recognize the art deco style. To better identify the art deco, I recommend you to look closely to everything in the basilica. Please write down the art deco elements you recognize. (are there returning elements?)

The stairs The cupola The pillars

Write here the returning elements. ………………………………………………………………………….

In this pictures, you see two stained glass windows. Try to find them and write down the title.

You already saw a big part of the basilica. It’s big, isn’t it? But you didn’t see everything yet! We will now go to the museum of modern religious art from the basilica. In this museum, you will see works of art from very diverse artists. In this museum, you have to observe everything very carefully. You will have to use your both eyes for the next tasks. You can also use pencils and markers.

Please go to work number 15 (VANPARYS Luce, ‘The Cardinall’, canvas). Change the composition of the painting: draw the lines in another part of the frame. You will see that by changing the lines you get another painting.

The last but maybe the best part of the basilica is the panorama. Take the lift to the fifth floor and enjoy the view over Brussels!

The basilica of Koekelberg is in Brussels. Draw or write here some of the elements thanks to which you know that we are in Brussels. Look carefully around you.
