Page 2: Legend and brief description of the Palazzi dei RolliThe palazzi were divided into three categories according to their level of architectural value and luxury, and each category reflected

In the year 1576 the Senate of the Republic of Genoa set up the so-calledRollo of public lodging palaces. The word referred to a roll (that is, a list

or roster) of aristocratic residences chosen officially to offer accommodationto illustrious guests and their entourages on state visits. The palazzi were divided into three categories according to their level ofarchitectural value and luxury, and each category reflected the varyingdegrees of dignity of the guests - ambassadors, dignitaries, princes, monarchs, popes and emperors.Lots were drawn on each occasion to determine which dwelling was to begiven the honour and the onus of giving accommodation to these guests.

Rubens visited Genoa several times in the early seventeenth century, and hewas so impressed by this exceptional network of palaces and the high levelof comfort that distinguished them that he proposed them as a model to beemulated throughout Europe in his now famous series of engravings entitled“Palazzi di Genova”.

In 2006 UNESCO inscribed "Le Strade Nuove and the System of Palazzi deiRolli" on the list of World Heritage Sites. The buildings that line the roads now known as Via Garibaldi and Via Cairoli(formerly Strada Nuova and Strada Nuovissima, respectively) and Via Balbiundoubtedly fully deserve this prestigious award. They were laid out in theperiod between the mid-sixteenth and late eighteenth century with the dualobjective of promoting the city’s urban development and offering newspaces for privileged aristocratic properties.

Many of the buildings have preserved their original structure virtually intactand parts have since become the sites of public institutions and museumsand are thus open to visitors. These include the buildings that belong to the system of the Museums ofStrada Nuova - Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Tursi - PalazzoSpinola di Pellicceria, which houses the National Gallery of Palazzo Spinola, and Palazzo Reale.

Although UNESCO recognition has officially been given to 42 buildings(marked by red plaques numbered from 1 to 42), the Sistema dei Rolli in factcomprised at least a further 42 palaces that have been identified up to nowand were included in the various editions of the rolli; some even have originsthat go back further into the past and are to be found throughout the urbanfabric of the historic centre. Although they have on occasions beenconsiderably modified over the centuries, these buildings still bear invaluabletestimony to their past grandeur.

The sixteenth-century Strada Nuova, now known as Via Garibaldi, is an environmentthat is unique for its refined architecture and impressive city planning. These

Renaissance-style palaces were built using high-class materials and sometimes decoratedwith stucco or fresco facades, behind which awaited monumental staircases and painteddecorations, while to the outside they opened up with loggias, courtyards and terracesoverlooking gardens featuring statues, fountains and nymphaea . In the late nineteenthcentury, two of these buildings – Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Rosso – were made overinto museums which showcase their famous art collections. A single path now connectsthem to the grandiose Palazzo Tursi and to a delightful string of open spaces. With its focus on classical art, the system of the "Museums of Strada Nuova" enhancesthe historical connection between the noble palaces and the art collections displayed andkept in them.conservate.

A seventeenth-century dwelling that is now a museum, this palace is of outstandingarchitectural and decorative interest and its rooms house the Brignole-Sale family’scollection of historical furnishings and art collections. The painting collection featuresmasterpieces by artists from Italy (Palma il Vecchio, Veronese, Guido Reni, Guercino, MattiaPreti), Genoa (Strozzi, Grechetto, Gregorio De Ferrari) and abroad (Dϋrer, six Van Dycks,Rigaud).A newly installed panoramic lift takes visitors to a viewpoint that offers stunning views overthe old town and the Strada Nuova.

Built in the sixteenth century, this palace preserves many Flemish works from the fifteenthto the eighteenth centuries (Memling, David, Rubens, Van Dyck), as well as works byItalian artists (Lippi, Caravaggio, Procaccini), Spanish artists (Zurbaran, Murillo) and manyfrom Genoa itself (Cambiaso, Strozzi, Asseretos, Fiasella, De Ferrari, Castello, Grechetto,Piola, Magnasco). The high point of any visit to the museum is Canova’s PenitentMagdalene.

Built in the so-called Century of the Genoese, in addition to the reception rooms of theMayor, this palazzo boasts several monumental rooms featuring extraordinary works ofdecorative art (tapestries, furniture, Ligurian ceramics, and in particular an importantcollection of pharmacy equipment from some of Genoa’s historic hospitals), in additionto collections of coins, and official weights and measures dating back to the ancientRepublic of Genoa. Also on display in the palace is the famous Guarneri del Gesù violin, as well as otherobjects and works of art that belonged to Paganini.

ANational Gallery since 1959, this building still has the air of a noble residence, offeringvisitors the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a seventeenth/eighteenth-

century residence. Its various owners – first the Grimaldis, then the Pallavicini, the Doriasand finally the Spinolas – have bequeathed the fittings (furniture, but also curtains, porcelain and silverware) and a prestigious art gallery featuring works by major Genoeseand Italian artists (Castello, Strozzi , Cambiaso, Parodi, Antonello da Messina, Giordano)and European artists (Van Cleve, Rubens, Van Dyck).

This sumptuous seventeenth-century palace, the patrician residence of various noblefamilies (Balbi, Durazzo, Savoy), preserves intact the furnishings, works of art and

everyday objects (from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century). Its rooms are home toa rich collection of paintings including works by many Italian and foreign artists (Van Dyck,Tintoretto, Strozzi) and some from the Genoese school (Piola, Grechetto, Schiaffino), as wellas sculptures by Filippo Parodi. Also of note is the collection of seventeenth- to eighteenth-century Genoese furniture.
