Introduction
The first component to our model is evaluating what neighbor-
hood is of greatest need (what neighborhood benefits most from
a community garden).
To do this we conducted a suitability analysis on USDA defined
food desert neighborhoods in LA county
Methodology & Results
The second component to our model compares accessibility to
healthy and unhealthy food surrounding the determined food
desert neighborhood. Using Network Analyst we created a
Closest Facility Analysis of grocery stores that offer a variety of
healthy foods and a Service Area Analysis of fast food restau-
rants within walking distance to the neighborhood.
The last component is focused on combining the environmental
opportunity and constraint factors that determine the most suit-
able location for a community garden. Based on suitability anal-
ysis of all factors, it was determined that the most thriving loca-
tion would be Henry Alvarez Memorial Park.
The greatest health threat to the Ramona Gardens residents, like
in many other food desert communities, is the vast accessibility
to fast foods and the low accessibility to grocery stores that have
a plethora of healthy foods. This model can be applied by organi-
zations seeking to determine the food desert communities most
in need of healthy foods by socioeconomic determinants. and
detrimental environmental conditions. Additionally, it provides the
basis for deciding on the location of community garden develop-
ment, based on supportive and limiting environmental factors.
We hope that this model can be utilized as a framework for bring-
ing environmental & food justice to low income communities.
