Raymond D. Aumack, ‘55In the Spring 1988 issue of Prep Magazine, the

cover story focused on “The Prep Network”—how alumni of various generations were makingprofessional contacts with increased frequency.Prominently featured was Ray Aumack, who waspersonally responsible for expediting a number ofprofessional relationships among his fellowalumni. The article ended with this quote by Ray:“The world is smaller, and richer, because we arepart of a great fraternity—Prep alumni.”

If you have ever come in contact with Ray,you can almost hear his voice as you read hisquote, since very few alumni have been as closelyidentified with the spirit of what it means to be aPrep alumnus.

Actually, Ray was “networking” with fellow alumni decades before the term enteredthe vernacular. Coupling his passion for Prep’s Ignatian values with his own spirituality,he has been one of the school’s premier ambassadors, and if something has beenimportant to Prep, it has been equally important to Ray. This manifested itselfprominently in 1991, when the school decided to create its first formal Alumni Boardand Ray topped every list of potential members. It had nothing to do with the alphabet;it had everything to do with his track record, including the pivotal role he played adecade earlier when Prep was first codifying its alumni and fundraising programs. Interms of staying connected, the Class of ’55 was something special…and Ray was itscenterpiece.

Ray holds a position of prominence in numerous personal phone lists, as he is calledupon often when an alumnus is in need of support or counseling. His insights andavuncular manner combine his Jesuit training with his undergraduate studies inphilosophy at Seton Hall and his master’s in divinity from Immaculate ConceptionSeminary. In addition, Ray has a master’s in New Testament studies from DrewUniversity and has taken numerous courses at institutions ranging from Notre Dame andNYU to the U. of Chicago and Catholic U. He also holds a post-graduate diploma inpsychotherapy from the Alfred Adler Institute.

Professionally, Ray’s career has included management positions in the healthcarefield, especially in the area of corporate health awareness and services, and for manyyears he headed his own human resources firm. Also, on the collegiate level he hastaught courses and lectured on such diverse topics as juvenile justice, careermanagement, St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans, and the Theology of Revolution. He alsois an accomplished writer and poet.

Ray has sat on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations, and currently he isvery involved as director of various ministries at St. Cassian’s Parish in his hometown ofMontclair. He also has been the recipient of myriad awards for leadership and service.Ray and wife Ruth are the proud and loving parents of four children.

Eugene C. Boyle, ‘56Prep alumni tend to enjoy each other’s

company—that’s a given. Of equal certitude is thefact that Prep alumni take particular pleasure inbeing in the company of Gene Boyle, ’56, who isidentified not only as a “guy’s guy,” but in aspecial way, “a Prep guy’s guy.”

A Bayonne native, Gene studied under fellow“Legends” Charlie Rooney and Lou Parisi, ’44,among others, and he was a varsity startingpitcher in the baseball program coached by yetanother Prep “Legend,” Bill Cochrane.

For most of his adult life, Gene has been a keycomponent of the Prep alumni landscape—amember of that core group who tend to be oneveryone’s contact list. It began with his stature

among his ’56 classmates, for whom he has served as class chairman since the title wascreated in the early 1980s. In a school that emphasizes creating and strengthening bondsamong its alumni, Gene helped to literally define the position.

At about this same period, when Prep embarked on the creation of what wouldevolve into a multi-faceted external affairs program, alumni leaders were needed. Asalways, Gene answered the call with enthusiasm, and the combination of his intelligenceand his exuberant personality was a magnet for others to join Prep’s nascent alumniprogram. He was a catalyst, and his ebullience and commitment were contagious. Also, his modus operandi was remarkably simple and admired: he listened—something he does aswell as anyone you will ever meet—and then provided logical and creative feedback.

It was not surprising that Gene would be “drafted” as a charter member of Prep’sAlumni Board in 1991 and later would share his talents further as a two-term member ofthe Board of Trustees, serving as chairman of its nominating committee. Concurrent withhis tenure as a trustee, he remained one of the most active members of the AlumniBoard—a position he proudly holds to this day.

A loyal son of Saint Peter’s College, Gene maintains close ties with his former Prepteacher and current rector of the College’s Jesuit community, Ed Heavey, S.J., ’47. Forboth institutions, in word and deed Gene has embodied the very best of their Ignatianvalues, and he is fiercely proud of his Jesuit foundation, which is complementedwonderfully by his training as a C.P.A.

A model of consistency, for the last 29 years he has worked as an administrator forCytec Industries, Inc., and he currently serves as the company’s director of real estate. He is an avid fan of sports on every level—especially when the high school uniformincludes the color maroon, or the helmet includes a N.Y. Giants logo—and is devoted tohis wife Cathy and their three daughters.

James F. Keenan, S.J.It is difficult to convey on a single page the

breadth and scope of Jim Keenan’s profoundimpact as a priest, administrator, and friend. Butin many ways it is unnecessary to do so, becauseif you know anything about Jesuit secondaryeducation, you certainly know his name. Hisimpressive resumé chronicles a lifetime ofdevotion to the ideals of Ignatian education, andyet he is known equally, if not more so, for whatare euphemistically referred to as his “peopleskills.” Whether in a corporate board room or at afamily memorial service, upon meeting him youwalk away saying, “What an incredibleindividual.”

This journey began more than 50 years agowhen he entered the Novitiate at St. Andrew-on-the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, and itcontinues to this day through his recent appointment as president of the NativityMission Schools of New York City.

A New York native, Jim began his Jesuit formation following his graduation fromBishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn. His studies took him to LoyolaSeminary for college and philosophy, Fordham University for graduate school, WoodstockCollege for theology, and Columbia Teachers College for graduate courses. During hisgraduate work at Fordham in 1963, he began a17-year tenure at Xavier High School inNew York City, during which he was promoted from teacher, to headmaster, to president…and from Mr. Keenan to Fr. Keenan upon his ordination in 1969. He then moved upstateto serve as president of McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester (1981-1988).Following a brief term as director of the Jesuit Seminary and Mission Bureau, he wasnamed president of Canisius High School in Buffalo, and in 1994, following in thefootsteps of Prep’s founding Jesuits 122 years earlier, he crossed the Hudson River andbegan twelve truly “legendary” years as Prep’s leader.

Highlights of “the Keenan years” have become part of the school’s lore: the successfulcompletion of two capital campaigns; the creation of the Warren Street Plaza; significantgrowth of the scholarship endowment; and the building of the athletic facility on GrandStreet that was named in his honor. This latter parcel, coupled with other propertyacquisitions, nearly doubled the size of the campus during his tenure.

But more meaningful than what he has done for the place is what he has done for thepeople whose lives he has touched. A phone call on an anniversary, a personal note, anunannounced hospital visit to an ailing alumnus, a word of encouragement to a nervousfreshman, his presence at more functions than one could list: Jim Keenan has madeothers feel remembered, comforted, loved. In every endeavor he effortlessly balanced hisrole as president/CEO with that of Jesuit priest, and in everything he did, his care forthe individual made it easy for everyone to call him “Father” (even though he alwaysprefers “Jim”).

He has left his magic every place he has served; he loved each school and each hasloved him back—truly, the stuff “Legends” are made of.

Charles M. Lizza, ’74, P’11Given his legacy of extraordinary service to

the alma mater, Charlie Lizza’s selection as a Prep“Legend” is no surprise. At the same time, Charlieholds a special distinction—that of being theyoungest of all the individuals who have receivedthis honor.

An honors student, Petroc editor-in-chief andvarsity swim team member, Charlie was “a natural”in the competitive and academic Jesuitenvironments of both Prep and Saint Peter’sCollege (summa cum laude and Rhodes Scholarnominee). He continued his Jesuit education atGeorgetown Law, where he was editor of the LawReview and graduated magna cum laude. After aclerkship for the chief federal judge in New York,he enjoyed a successful early career at Shearman

and Sterling in Manhattan, and later as a partner at LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene and MacRae.This year he joined the Newark office as a partner of Philadelphia-based Saul EwingLLP, concentrating in commercial, product liability and patent litigation. Charlie alsoserves as a federal mediator in the U.S. District Court of New York and has taught as anadjunct professor at Rutgers Law School.

Charlie has always remained in touch with his roots at Grand & Warren, and hisfinancial support of the school as a young professional served as a role model for othersof his generation. He joined Prep’s Board of Trustees in 1994 and served as chairmanfrom 1999-2004, succeeding fellow “Legend” Tom Sullivan, ’53. Not surprisingly, it was aseamless transition, especially noteworthy because it took place as Prep was launching itsCarpe Diem capital campaign. Charlie joined Prep President Jim Keenan, S.J., in a potentpartnership during this period of great change, including tremendous growth of theendowment, the restructuring of faculty salaries, the acquisition of the adjacent grammarschool and church properties, and the building of Keenan Field.

Like all such honorees, Charlie continues to lead by example, underscored by theendowed Prep scholarship he and his brother John, ’75 created in their parents’ honor. Inaddition, Charlie ranks among the school’s most trusted advisors in legal and strategicmatters.

Charlie’s personal and professional generosity to Prep is only one component of hisliving the Jesuit ideals. He is an advocate for children through his leadership in the areasof youth counseling, education and adoption services, and he currently serves on theBoard of Directors of Covenant House New York, for which he was elected boardchairman for 1998-2003. He also is general counsel to the Heart Gallery of New Jerseyand has leadership roles in the Boy Scouts, from which he has received numeroushonors.

Charlie and his wife Sandy are residents of Summit, where they have embraced theirnew role as proud Prep parents, with son David in freshman year and his brotherMichael planning to join him next year.
