2017-18 BY THE NUMBERS

ALL-TIME VS. LOYOLA (MD.)The Mountain Hawks hold a 9-7 record all-time against the Grey-hounds, with the teams evened up at 5-5 since Loyola joined the Patriot League in 2013-14.

Lehigh is 3-6 all-time on the road at Loyola and holds a 6-1 record against the Greyhounds at Stabler Arena. Loyola won both matchups at Reitz Arena last season and took the first matchup between the two this year down in Baltimore. Lehigh captured last year’s matchup at Stabler Arena 86-69, thanks in part to a 34-for-40 performance from the free throw line.

Since Loyola joined the league, the two teams have split the regular season series in three of the four years, with Lehigh sweeping in 2015-16.

The first matchup this season on Jan. 24 saw Loyola pull out a 67-64 win on a three-pointer by Alexis Gray with 1.2 seconds left. Loyola shot 49.1 percent overall and was 6-for-10 from three-point range, while Lehigh shot 45.3 percent and went 7-for-14 from beyond the arc. Each team had 14 turnovers and 10 assists, and Loyola won the rebounding battle 30-29.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDSIn the midst of a four-game losing skid, Loyola is currently sitting in a four-way tie for sixth place in the Patriot League, but officially is sitting in eighth place. The team had previously won four of five before their current skid, a stretch that included wins over Lehigh, at Bucknell and at Holy Cross. The team has dropped its last two road games at Amer-ican and Colgate.

Freshman Izzy Therien is coming off her fourth Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor. She collected 26 points and six rebounds against Bucknell and added 18 points and 10 boards on Saturday at Colgate. She has moved into a fourth place tie in the PL this season with 15.1 ppg and ranks third in league play by scoring 15.9 points per contest, leading all freshmen in both categories. In the first matchup this season, she led Loyola with 21 points and eight rebounds.

Sophomore Stephanie Karcz picked up the program’s first-ever tri-ple-double earlier this season and is among the league leaders in sev-eral categories including second in rebounding (10.4), sixth in scoring (15.0), third in assists (3.8) and leads the PL with 3.8 steals per game. Earlier this year against Lehigh, she totaled 16 points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals while knocking down 7-of-10 shots.

As a team, Loyola is averaging 59.8 points per game this season, but is third in league play at 61.2 ppg. Defensively, they are allowing a league-worst 66.9 ppg, equating to a scoring margin of -5.7. Overall this season, they rank last in the Patriot League by shooting just 36.6 per-cent from the field and allowing opponents to shoot 44.6 percent. They are ninth in both three-point percentage (.267) and allowing opponents to shoot a league-high 35.7 percent from the outside. On the boards, they rank seventh in rebounding margin (-2.9) and fifth in turnover margin (+0.2).

ROAD PROGRESSOver the last six road games, Lehigh’s defense has held opponents to an average of 56.8 points and holds a -0.1 scoring margin, both better than its season road averages. How-ever, LU has gone 2-4 in those games, with two of those losses coming by three points at Loyola and Navy.

Over the last six road games, Lehigh has averaged 6.8 steals per game, just over its 6.2 season average and holds a turnover margin of +1.7. Lehigh has also trimmed nearly three points off its road scoring margin over the last six away games.

ROUGH ROUND TWOLehigh has struggled throughout the second half of league play, averaging 11.9 fewer points per game and going 1-5 over the second half, despite allowing nearly four fewer points per game than the first nine games. The team’s 3pt percentage has also dropped 19.5 percent.

MOVING ON UPQuinci Mann moved into sixth place Saturday on Lehigh’s all-time scoring list, passing Jessica DePalo ‘05 with 1,476 career points.

KEEPING THEM OFF THE BOARDLehigh has held opponents to 56 points or less in seven of its last 10 games, with their 67-64 loss at Loyola and their two losses to unbeaten American being the only games where they have allowed 60 points during that stretch. The stretch includes holding Navy and their league-leading offense (67.1 ppg) to just 53 points in Annapolis.

40 PERCENTLehigh is 11-2 this season when shooting at least 40 percent overall, but both of those losses have come in the last two instances where they have shot over 40 percent (1/24 at Loyola and 2/17 at Army).

POWER OUTAGELehigh had its worst offensive output of the season at home in their Feb. 10 loss to Ameri-can, with their 44 points, 28.6 field goal pct., and 16 made field goals all home season lows. Overall, each of those stats was the second lowest output of the season, ahead of only the Nov. 17 game vs. Villanova at PPL Center.Last Wednesday against Colgate, Lehigh shot a season-low 15 percent (3-for-20) from three-point range.

UNDER 50Lehigh has failed to reach the 50-point mark in back-to-back home games for the first time since Jan. 2013 when they scored 37 vs. Bucknell and 47 vs. Navy.

SKIDS IN GROUPS OF FOURLehigh has been held to 52 points or less in four straight games for the first time since a four-game stretch spanning the end of the 2010-11 season, and the first three games of the 2011-12 season, when the team combined for an average of 46.3 points (all four games were on the road).

HIGHEST SINGLE GAME POINT TOTALS

DOWNTOWN CLOSEDLehigh has failed to shoot 20 percent from three-point range in three straight games and has gone six straight without hitting at least 30 percent. Through their first four Patriot League home games, Lehigh was 40-for-80 from three-point range. Over their last three, the team has gone a combined 9-for-54 (16.7 percent).

AHED OF THE PACKHannah Hedstrom tied career highs with 11 rebounds and five steals on Feb. 14 against Colgate. It was the second time this season she achieved those totals, previously collecting 11 rebounds vs. Navy on Jan. 2 and five steals on Dec. 29 vs. Lafayette.

She also tallied seven assists, her second-highest total of the season.

POINTS IN QUARTERSFour of Lehigh’s seven lowest quarterly outputs of the season have occurred in the last four games. Lehigh scored seven points in the first quarter and six points in the fourth against American on Feb. 10. LU tied a season-low with five points in the first quarter on Feb. 7 at Bucknell. Last Wednesday, Lehigh was held to eight points in the third quarter vs. Colgate.

FREE THROW STORYFree throws were a common denominator in the outcomes of Lehigh’s four games from Jan. 24-Feb. 7. Lehigh earned a big road win at Boston U. on Feb. 3 after converting 13-of-14 free throws in the fourth quarter and 20-of-23 in the game to help pull away from the Terriers for a nine-point win.

In their three losses over that stretch at Loyola, Navy and Bucknell, Lehigh was a com-bined 23-for-45 (51.1 percent), losing two of those games by just three points.

LOOKING FOR A REBOUND ON THE BOARDSIn non-league play, Lehigh was outrebounded only once in 11 games and held a rebound-ing margin of +3.9, but has been outrebounded in 10 of its 15 league games, and drew even with Boston U. on Feb 3. Lehigh’s current rebounding margin in league play is -3.4, which is ninth in the league. Overall, this season the Mountain Hawks are sixth in rebounding margin at -0.3.

TOP WOMANNDuring league play, Quinci Mann is tied for fifth with 15.4 ppg, is fourth with a 40.5 3FG% and ranks fourth with 2.0 three-pointers per game.

Mann has knocked down at least four three-pointers in five games this season and has had three games with at least five triples. It is the most 4+ three-point games she has had in one season.

STORY OF THE FOURTHLehigh has been outscored by its opponents in the fourth quarter in seven of its last 10 games, and tied 12-12 with Army on Saturday. Overall, Lehigh has outscored its oppo-nents in the fourth quarter in 18 of 26 games this season, but 16 of those came in the first 17 games of the season.

WEST POINT, N.Y. - A late 8-0 run was not enough on Saturday afternoon for the Lehigh women’s basketball team, which fell 55-50 on the road at Army West Point. Two seniors led the way for Lehigh with Quinci Mann scoring 15 of her game-high 17 points in the second half, and Bernadette Devaney scoring 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and 2-for-2 from three-point range. Sophomore Camryn Buhr also reached double figures with 10 points, a team-high six rebounds and three blocks. Lehigh (43.8 percent/21-for-48) outshot Army (43.8 percent/22-for-53), but the Black Knights won the rebounding battle 36-25, including 16-8 on the offensive end. Army turned the ball over 15 times to LU’s 12, and Lehigh held advantages of 13-12 in points off turnovers and 32-26 in the paint.“There are good things that we need to build off of,” said head coach Sue Troyan. “There’s still a lot to play out here over the last three games of the season. You have to take the good things and can’t hang your head. I thought their defensive effort was tremendous and played a great game. But, we just struggled at the beginning of the fourth quarter to get anything going offensively and were fortunate to make a run there in the last four minutes.”Mann had a jumper early as Army missed their first five shots before scoring seven straight points off a three, layup and a breakaway layup off a steal to go up 7-2 by the 4:27 media timeout. Devaney broke a 9-2 run with a three-pointer at 2:04 then added a layup in the final minute, as Army held an 11-9 lead after one. After Buhr tied it in the opening moments of the second quarter, Army ran off six straight to take a 17-11 lead. The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes before Jess Lewis hit a three to give Army its largest lead of the half at 23-16 with 1:40 to go. Buhr followed with a basket, then Dev-aney, who returned to the floor after suffering an injury earlier in the quarter, notched a steal near midcourt and took it all the way to the rim for two with 1:01 left, then followed by draining a long three with 25 seconds left to cut it to 25-23 going into the locker room. Lehigh committed just one turnover in the second after turning it over six times in the first.“Bernie gave us good minutes and made some big shots,” Troyan said. “She was really aggressive with the basketball. In the second half, I thought Quinci did a good job of just making plays. Their defense did not give us a lot, so it was about making plays and I thought Quinci did a good job of breaking them down a bit.”Lehigh came out of the locker room and built a four-point, 33-29 lead over the first three-plus minutes of the third following a layup from Hannah Hedstrom and baseline jumper from Mae Williams. After Mann made it 35-31 at the 4:55 mark, Army closed the quarter on a 12-3 run as Lehigh missed its last three shots and committed three turnovers.Trailing 43-39 entering the fourth, Lehigh went down by nine as Army extended the run to 18-5, outscoring Lehigh 6-2 over the first six minutes of the period. Mann put in a jumper to be within five at the 8:05 mark before the Cadets went up 49-40 with 3:53 left. From there, the Mountain Hawks battled back to get within one thanks to an 8-0 run. Hedstrom began the run with a free throw at 3:46. Lehigh then forced three turnovers on consecutive possessions, the first of which led to an offensive rebound by Cameryn Benz, which set up Mann for a basket and free throw, making it 49-44. Buhr followed with a layup at 2:07 and Mann sank a jumper in the paint on the next possession to cut it to 49-48 with just 1:33 left. Army’s Janae McNeal and Mann each matched layups before Army pulled down a critical offensive rebound off a missed jumper with 24 seconds left. After two free throws with 16 seconds left made it 53-50, Lehigh turned to Mann to tie the game as time ticked down, but her attempt from the corner ironed out with one second left.“They had their way with us on the offensive rebounds,” Troyan said. “That’s the one area on the defensive end that really cost us, giving them 16 offensive boards. I thought they showed a lot of toughness and a lot of fight that we haven’t seen recently. If there is a small takeaway from the game, it’s I thought they competed and played hard.”
