What is an insight briefing?
The rich 2018 survey dataset allows for further analysis by a range of factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, geography and deprivation. Insight briefings have been prepared to further investigate topics of interest.
This briefing investigates the issue of those in poor health who show signs of falling behind since the previous survey and compared to the average Leicester resident.

Quotas were set by age, gender, ethnicity, work status and ward to ensure demographic representativeness, with data weighted to the known profile of the Leicester adult population to mitigate non-response bias.
Respondents were selected for interview randomly in pre-assigned sample points across Leicester.
Fieldwork took place between 5 March and 25 July 2018 and 2,224 interviews were completed.
Ipsos MORI were commissioned by Leicester City Council to undertake a face-to-face survey of residents in Leicester aged 16+. Interviews were conducted in the home using Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI).

Responses determine whether a resident has a poor, average, or good mental wellbeing.
This insight briefing will explore the demographic profile of those with a poor mental wellbeing and the extent to which they are more at risk of poor physical health outcomes.

The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing 7 Item Scale (WEMWBS) asks Leicester residents to describe how often they were experiencing the following over the last two weeks.

% Poor mental wellbeingBy geography there are higher proportions of residents experiencing poor mental wellbeing in the most deprived areas of the city. In particular Belgrave, Mowmacre and Stocking Farm, and Northfields.
Some groups are significantly more likely to be experiencing poor mental wellbeing. For example about half (48%) of residents aged long-term sick/disabled 65+ have a poor mental wellbeing.
Other groups significantly more likely to be living with poor mental wellbeing include social renters and those living with a long term limiting condition.
23% of those living alone, 18% of carers, and 17% of those living with children under 16 experience poor mental wellbeing.
Poor mental wellbeing score: 17% or an estimated 47,000 16+ Leicester residents
Of those with a poor mental wellbeing score 55% were female and 45% were male. 45% are aged under 35, 32% are aged between 35 and 54, and 23% are aged 55+. Nearly half (47%) are White British, a third are Asian British, and 8% are Black British. 43% are in employment, 13% are in education. Over a third (35%) have a limiting long term condition, one in five are living alone and 38% live with children under 16 years.

By geography there are higher proportions of those experiencing poor mental wellbeing in Abbey. Knighton residents are significantly less likely to experience poor mental wellbeing.
