103rd ANNUAL REPORT, 1957

Six ordinary meetings of the Society were held, at which the following papers were read: 5 January 22 March

3 May

5 July II October

13 December

R. A. McKinley, Esq., M .A., F.R.Hist.S.: "Leicester after 1835". Charles Hadfield, Esq., and C. R. Clinker, Esq.: "The Ashby-dela-Zouch Canal and its Tramroads" . Miss Christina Hole: "Folklore Traditions of Megaliths and other Stones in Britain". Annual General Meeting at the University of Leicester. C. W. Phillips, Esq., M.A., F.S.A.: "Archreology in the Ordnance Survey". Alan Warhurst, Esq., B.A., A.M.A. : "The Jutish Cemetery at Lyminge, Kent".

In addition, the following meetings were held : 22 February Quiz on Old Leicestershire at the Newarke Houses Museum. 24 October D. T.-D. Clarke, Esq., M.A., A.M.A. : "Roman Leicester". (By kind

invitation of the Leicester Museums Association.) 8 November F . T . Baker, Esq.,M.A.,F.S.A.,A.M.A.: "Roman Lincoln, 1946-57".

(By kind invitation of the Vaughan Archreological and Historical Society.)

The following meetings were held at Melton Mowbray : 18 October R. D. Abbott, Esq., and E. Coy, Esq.: "Roman Discoveries at

Goadby Marwood". 22 November D. T.-D. Clarke, Esq., M .A., A.M.A.: "Anglo-Saxon Art".

The chief event of the year was the revival of the Society's branch at Melton Mowbray, which had lapsed since the war. It has been vigorously organised, and by the close of the year counted some 70 members. This is a most encouraging sign, and it is to be hoped that i_t may lead to the re-establishment of some of the other branches in the county that used to be active in former years. It would be a pity if the work of the "Leicestershire Archreological Society" should be concentrated too exclusively in Leicester itself.

The Committee received with much regret the resignations of the Rev. J. W. Burford, Mrs. H. Percy Gee, and Mr. R. A. McKinley. The following new members were appointed: Mr. F. S. Cheney, the Ven. I. D . Edwards, Mr. J. M. Lee, Miss M. Rippin. Mr. K. C. Wright was elected to represent the Melton Mowbray branch on the Committee.

The Inland Revenue has rejected the Society's claim for repayment of incometax on covenanted subscriptions. If this decision is upheld it will mean a reduction in the Society's income of some £roo a year. A considerable number of similar societies throughout the country are affected by the decision, and it is to be contested on their behalf by a national society. The Committee has the problem continually under review.

It is pleasant to report that the Leicestershire County Council has made a grant of £25 towards the work of the Society during this year, and that the City of Leicester has made a grant of the same amount for the second year in succession. The Society is grateful to these public authorities for their support.

Excursions The 1957 excursion season was particularly lively, and a more than ordinary

number of events was organised. The first was a whole-day outing, on 28 June, to Lincoln, which 24 people attended. Coach and cars converged upon St. Peter-atGowts church at 11.30, where members and friends were greeted by the Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Mrs. Mervin. Mr. F. T . Baker, F .S.A., then took charge and conducted the party to St. Mary's Guildhall, St. Mary-le-Wigford church, the High Bridge and the Glory Hole. The company then visited the Stonebow and Guildhall

and saw the city regalia (not forgetting the mace-bearer's hat) and some of the charters there displayed. After the lunch interval members re-assembled at the delightful City and County Museum and, after a good look at it, took coach for Above the Hill. There Mr. Baker pointed out a number of Roman antiquities at and around the Newport Arch and showed some deep excavations in progress. A brief dash was made to the Castle, with its mottes and old prison, and then tea was served at the East Gate Court Hotel. After tea Mr. Baker handed over to the Rev. Canon A. M . Cook, the Sub-Dean, who conducted the company over the Cathedral, ending with a visit to the magnificent Wren Library. Members were indeed grateful to him and to Mr. Baker for showing them some of the most significant and fascinating aspects of an intensely interesting city and cathedral-all in the brilliant sunshine and notable heat of high summer.

On 6 July Mrs. C. C. Pickson and Miss M . Rippin organised a delightful and informal party at Desford. The company assembled at the church, where Mr. J. A. Daniell said something about the changes it had undergone since Nichols published his description. This was followed by a walk round the village, visiting several houses of various dates and ending at Sunbreak, where a wonderful tea was provided. There was ;:ilso an opportunity to see an informative collection of old photographs, etc., of Desford. Mr. David Clarke expressed members' great gratitude to Mrs. Dickson and Miss Rippin.

Professor J. Simmons conducted an enjoyable outing to Kedleston and Derby on 17 July, which was attended by some 50 people. After a pleasant drive through Ashby, Ticknall and Repton, the company assembled in Kedleston church, where Professor Simmons spoke about its development and the history of the Curzon family and of their home. An hour or so was spent viewing Kedleston Hall, and tea was taken in the Old Kitchen there. The party ·then proceeded, through a rather tedious drizzle, to Derby to see the Cathedral, an illuminating example of ecclesiastical building more or less contemporary with Kedleston Hall.

Mr. David T.-D. Clarke organised a splendid "pilgrimage" to Bosworth Field for 24 August. Most unfortunately he was not able to conduct it himself, and Mr. R. D. Abbott stepped heroically into the breach at very short notice. The company, nearly 90 strong and adorned with the roses of their allegiance, first inspected sundry relics of Bosworth that are displayed in the Newarke Houses Museum. They then proceeded to Stoke Golding to see the beautiful church there, and thence to Bosworth Field. On the way they encountered abundant evidence of progressive farming and arrived at King Dick's Well as for a Court of Piepowder. Here Mr. Abbott described the march of the armies towards the battlefield and the course of the battle. This very large party was entertained to tea by Mr. W. F. Gosling, Headmaster of the Dixie Grammar School. The Bosworth Sword, which belongs to the School and is a relic of a seventeenth-century engagement, was displayed. The proceedings concluded with a visit to Market Bosworth Hall, by kind permission of the Matron. This proved the largest outing for many years and it was much enjoyed.

The final outing of the season, to Norman Rutland on 21 September, was also well supported, some 70 people attending. Mr. J. L. Barber, of Oakham School, joined the coach in Uppingham and he described most sympathetically the churches of Marcott, Preston and Egleton. Tea was served at the Crown Hotel, Oakham, and there Mr. John Milne proposed a most cordial vote of thanks tp Mr. Barber.

Donations from the Excursions Fund were made to the churches visited.
