Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

EDITORIALReading in the press the other day, Sam Bailey is third favourite to win The X Factor, but after her version of The Power Of Love, when I’m sure people around the country were like me, watching her had goose bumps/hairs on the back of your neck standing on end! She absolutely nailed it! word and note perfection, and for me a performance second to none so far! Sam has raised the bar to a very high standard, and from the looks and comments from all four judges, she has what it takes to win! Everyone....was gob smacked, and didn’t she look well with her make-over?!? Sam, for me, is certain to get a recording contract from someone in the industry, I just hope she will still do a few more appearances for her grass roots!?! More on this next month! Back in the September issue I reported the Wigston R.B.L. changing it’s name,

well the Elms Social and Ex-Service Club is having a Grand Opening Day on 2nd November 2013 of which there will be several events during the day, followed by a knockout group The Nanna Radleys in the evening. Well only eight weeks or so to Christmas, is your Club ready?? Extending hours - extra staffing - acts costing more over the festive time fur and feathers etc. etc. Hopefully tills will be ringing glad tidings and yes, paying up! It’s a busy time for clubs, even though, hopefully, monies coming in, look at the out goings too! I know a lot of clubs are still struggling, and if some committees don’t watch purse strings it’s so easy to slip into finance problems. We also have to look at the rising costs of heating our clubs so controlling staff hours, opening times, price of acts, when to have heating on (not in an empty club) could keep your club open and staff in a job!!! Ent Secs at the last meeting at Enderby included The Elms, Eyres Monsell, Pool, Latimer, Sileby, Melton RBL, Enderby, South Wigston WMC, Thurmaston PWMC and Lutterworth. THE ELMS SOCIAL AND EX-SERVICE CLUB(FORMERLY WIGSTON RBL)

Wow, almost another year over, they go quicker each time . I’ll start this month with the age old problem that I know Ent. Secs. have, and also Dave for the the Club News, and that is getting photos of the acts that are booked. There have been times this year when I’ve had to phone three or four times to chase them up, the answer each time is “I’ll send you them tomorrow”. A week later, I’m phoning them again with the same answer given, it even got to the point when I had to cancel a special show we had booked recently because of the endless phone calls with nothing in return to publicise it. Surely, the reason acts have their photo’s and posters done is to promote thmselves, not to be sitting on the floor in their house; so rather then being happy with the booking and the wages please let us advertise you properly to get more people to enjoy your show. The entertainment at the Club to end September was the welcome return of local guitar duo Choc Ice, Claude and Doug, as always, gave us a great night singing and playing songs to suit all ages and tastes being great throughout. Next up was a brilliant Friday night with the welcome return for The Frankie Valli Story and male/female duo 2 Xtreme. A tremendous all round show with The Frankie Valli Story being presented in chronological order from the real early days to the Four Seasons right up to Grease. Stephen James has an unbelievable voice sounding just like him with an incredible vocal range. 2 Xtreme finished the show with some good energetic pop songs getting all the dancers up. A great turnout enjoyed a splendid show. A late replacement next saw the welcome return to the club for local five piece live band Funktion Junction. All five are excellent musicians and vocalists singing and playing pop, rock, disco soul and ballads from the 60’s to present day. A band with huge talent. Following them, we had the what is now Annual Charity Show for Macmillans Cancer Unit and the night was dedicated to a sadly missed member Andrea Hall. All five acts on the show did a great job, vocalist/compere Phil Voss did a fabulous job keeping the show flowing from start to finish. Sheffield vocalist Cherry Pink fought her way through the Friday traffic and delivered a fantastic set of varied material along with her pleasant stage personality. Male/female duo Hot Stuff, originally from Leicester, now living in Derbyshire gave us a really exciting set with songs by David Bowie, T Rex, Kim Wilde and Queen among others, it’s great to see them back. Following the interval, we were treated to the first appearance here for vocalist Lesley, originally from Skegness now very local living in Wigston. It certainly won’t be the last as she proved to be very popular with her amazing singing voice and bubbly personality, despite me losing half a pint of my beer, she will always be welcomed back. Finishing the show was the top local band who have reformed this year, The Munix. What an absolute joy it is to see these guys back together with still two original members. Tremendous playing from all four with three really strong lead vocals complimented by their watertight harmonies. A nod to the past with some 60’s songs along with some new ones by the likes of Duran Duran, The Eagles and Badfinger. It was a great night with a perfectly balanced show and at the time of writing, over £600 has been raised for the Charity which is brilliant, with more to come. Next up was the long awaited return to the club for the male duo Brothers In Soul. As the name suggests, they do a lot of soul and motown stuff along with a bit of Blues Brothers. Both of them possess terrific singing voices and were well liked. Following them was the welcome return for local comedy duo Fingers ‘n’ Fumbs. Steve and Des are now long running stalwarts on the circuit and know how to put an entertaining show together. A mixture of songs and comedy (some of it very topical) got everyone singing and laughing. A show with a difference and never a let down. I’d like to wish everyone reading this a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I’m off to Blackpool for Christmas for the first time ever and I’ll report on the entertainment very soon. CHARITY SHOW AT THE ELMS SOCIAL & EX-SERVICE CLUBA great night was had by all on October 11th when Phill Voss, who compered the show in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Unit opened with five songs which were performed superbly.Also appearing were Cherry Pink, Hot Stuff, Lesley and to finish the night, the recently re-formed band, The Munix.All the artists performed free of charge which was very commendable, and did a fantastic job for this very worthy cause - our thanks to all of them for a very entertaining evening.
