FROM THE TOPWelcome to LSV for this afternoon’sBetfred Championship game againstSheffield Eagles. It’s game number 13of the league campaign so by around5pm this evening we will have playedeach one of our Championshipopponents and the season will bevirtually halfway through. It’samazing how quickly the last fewmonths have flown by.Sheffield are always tough andredoubtable opponents and in Mark Astonhave a vastly talented, experienced andcommitted person at the helm who livesand breathes the club. Mark and me goback a long way and I well remembersome of the Eagles’ great days in the1990s when he was steering them aroundthe park from scrum half. The ChallengeCup semi-final defeat of Salford andsubsequent amazing cup final victory overWigan at Wembley in 1998 were twounforgettable occasions and Mark ofcourse won the Lance Todd Trophy on thatfamous day.

I used to report for League Express on alot of games back in those days andcovered a lot of the Eagles’ games and astunning World Club Championship winover Perth Western Reds at Don ValleyStadium is another game that lingers longin the memory.

I remember too when I used to writeplenty of articles and interviews forLeague Express’s Friday paper which, when edited by the estimable TonyHannan, was a wonderful publication andis much-missed. Eagles players like PaulBroadbent, Darren Turner, Paul Carr,Lynton Stott and Richard Price becamepersonal friends and it was great to seethe former recently with his son Blake, now part of the Eagles playing squad.

So, too, the Eagles’ win at Chorley in thelast ever game of rugby league played inthe 1900s when Mark led from the frontas the re-formed club started out all overagain following the ‘merger’ that sawSheffield ‘merge’ with Huddersfield. JohnLedger, then writing in the Yorkshire Post, famously wrote that as part of the mergerthe ‘new’ club took the ‘Hudders’ fromHuddersfield and the ‘field’ from Sheffieldto arrive at Huddersfield.

But for Mark’s unswerving bloody-mindedness the Eagles, just over a yearafter that Wembley win would have foldedbut here they are, 20 years on one of the

most respected playing teams outside thetop flight and in a new home built on thefootprint of Don Valley. I may be in aminority, but I loved going to Don Valley, not least for a pre-match visit to theCocked Hat, sadly just like the stadium nolonger with us.

Anyone who’s visited Olympic Legacy Parkwill be under no illusions of the task facingMark and the Sheffield stalwarts inestablishing an infrastructure worthy of aChampionship club off the field but ifanyone can do it, they can. It was good tosee Dick Pepper, an Eagles stalwart sinceGary Hetherington formed the club in1984, at our recent Challenge Cup gameand doubtless, we shall meet up againtoday...............................................................

I’ve really enjoyed the season so farand it was great to stand behind theposts with the Leigh fans at Batley.Mount Pleasant holds specialmemories for my wife Janet who wastwo weeks overdue expecting ourfirst child back in September 1990.With a Leigh game at Batley looming andme not having missed a Leigh game formany years there was only one thing forit- she came with me, sat on the thengrass bank at the far end and fortunately, not only did Leigh win but we got backover to the right side of the Pennines intime for Jennifer to be born in Lancashire.

Here we were 29 years on at MountPleasant in the sunshine and not only wasJanet with me but on the very same spotwhere we sat all those years ago, we metup again with our great friends, theSmallshaw family whose three generationsall follow the club avidly. Alan and his sonDavid were both at that game with us in1990. Only in rugby league could youcreate memories like that.

Please pardon the trip down memory lanebut as I write this I am in a reflective moodas our youngest daughter Sarah is gettingmarried on Friday, two days before theSheffield game. If she has learnt one thingfrom her dad, it’s not to schedule thingslike weddings on a day when Leigh mightbe playing so at least I’ve taught hersomething...............................................................

It was brilliant to meet up with somany Leigh fans at Batley and enjoya great win in the sunshine.

The connect between the team and thefans is something really special this yearand long may that continue. In such apunishing sport as Rugby League thedemands on part-time players areincredible and their bravery and dedicationis something to be admired.

I shared everyone’s anguish when JonnyPownall sustained that serious injuryagainst Dewsbury and wish him and LukeAdamson- facing an operation on hisbroken elbow- every best wish in theirrecovery.

It was fantastic to learn that the injuries toGregg McNally and Josh Woods were notas serious as first thought. I know howmuch our supporters appreciate thesacrifices our players- and those of everyclub- make for our entertainment.

Batley’s a dog-friendly stadium- it couldhardly be anything else with the monikerBulldogs- so Joe Cator’s dog Benji wasable to come along and Jerry Lyons ableto capture a photo that’s gone viral onsocial media.

Finally, it’s great to welcome Mike Cleggand his Atherton Collieries squad as ourguests this afternoon. Three promotions,to level three of the non-league game is asimply outstanding achievement, reflectedin Matt Lawton’s excellent article in thisprogramme. The North Stand will givethem a raucous ovation at half-time whichthey fully deserve.

Enjoy the gameMike

THE CENTURION • THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME OF LEIGH CENTURIONS RLFC 5

This afternoon we welcome SheffieldEagles to LSV in what is our onlyhome game during the month of May.It’s always special to step out infront of the North Stand and theplayers will be going all out tocontinue our good run ahead of atwo-week break.Mark Aston has recruited really well andthe Eagles have been going great so farthis season. Mark’s a great bloke and heknows this division and the players insideout and we know what a tough task weface this afternoon. Sheffield’simprovement is mirrored across thecompetition. Batley have certainly movedup another level for example and look atDewsbury, who achieved a great win atWidnes last Sunday, while York came soclose to a victory in France.

The Championship gets better every yearand it’s a great competition with so manyvariables to consider, not least thedifferent pitches and conditions youencounter over a long campaign.

That’s what made our victory at Batleylast Sunday so satisfying. It was a specialwin, the best of the season so far for usin my opinion. Batley have been playingreally well and we knew what a hardgame it would be, especially coming offthe back of a tough Easter programmeand a hard run of games.

In our preparation we spoke about effort, attitude and enthusiasm and the boys had

those qualities in abundance. Going in athalf-time with a lead meant everything. We knew how hard it was defending thatslope against the big Batley forwards.

Josh, Ridy and Ryan controlled the gameand Ryan, on his second debut lookedreally classy for us. Ryan’s been thereand done it in his career and now heneeds to get his career back on track andenjoy his rugby.

Jack Higginson’s been away and gotsome game time in at Rochdale and hecame in and produced a fantasticperformance, capped by a magnificent tryat the end. James Laithwaite continuedhis impressive return to the game andAndy Thornley filled in at centre and did asterling job.

But it’s unfair to single out individualsbecause it was a really impressive teamperformance and it was great to see theLeigh fans out in force and enjoying thesunshine.

The last home game saw us defeatDewsbury Rams, another improved sideand maybe our result now looks evenbetter in the light of their win at Widnessix days later. I was really happy with thetwo points. I was really upset with GoodFriday’s performance at Widnes in a localderby. We had a good chat Sundaymorning and ironed a few things out.

It was all about the two points. It always ison Easter Monday. I don’t know when

they’re going to have a think and get ridof these Easter games because it killsyour season off. We lost three or fourplayers with injuries and it alwayshappens around Easter. It’s silly askingpart-time teams to play two games in fourdays as you invariably get injuries and wesaw that with both sides having ladsbeing seen by the doctor.

Thankfully a couple of the injuries weren’tas bad as we feared but sadly JonnyPownall’s season is over after he suffereda serious knee injury late in the game, confirmed by an MRI scan. Jonny’s beenoutstanding for us and we’ll be doing allwe can to support him in his recovery.

I think we have got to deal better withteams coming trying to frustrate us.That’s what teams have been doing on uswhen they come to Leigh. Joe Cator, 80minutes through the middle backing upafter Friday was outstanding. He’s a fit ladand he’s been great for us and Micky(Higham) and Hoody (Liam Hood) at 6 and7 at the end there – I don’t think that’sever been seen. I’m just glad we hadplayers at the end there.

It was fantastic from James Bentley andIain Thornley and James Laithwaiteperforming like that for 80 minutes afterhis lay-off, superb. Jake Emmitt markinghis 250th game which is a greatachievement so that was special again. So, some big efforts again on EasterMonday.

Matty Costello was great too, filling atfullback after Gregg was injured early on.So, to then see him score a hat-trick forSaints against Catalans was fantastic andfurther proof of the mutual benefits toSaints and ourselves of the dualregistration partnership.

Danny Richardson has got his Saintsplace back and it was nice to read hiskind words about how much he enjoyedhis time at Leigh earlier in the season andwhat a positive impact it made on him.

Hopefully the sun will be shiningtoday, as it always is in Leigh andwe’ll enjoy being back at LSV playingin front of our fantastic fans. Enjoy the game, Duffs

No matter how many games of rugbyleague you’ve played, or where in theworld you’ve played them, nothingquite prepares you for a game atMount Pleasant, Batley. Kevin Tamationce described the ground’s name asa rare example of a Yorkshiremanhaving a sense of humour as it’s farfrom pleasant for a player unused tothe peculiarities there.Someone once described the pitch as agreat leveller, meaning I suppose thatBatley were a match for anyone on thatpitch because they know it inside out. Iknow what they meant but in fact as weall saw on Sunday that pitch is far fromlevel, in fact the slope seems to get biggerevery year.

Quite what Luke Douglas thought about itafter playing so many years in Australia hekept to himself. I don’t think they havepitches like that in the NRL. But Lukesimply did what he does best, rolled uphis sleeves and got on with the job, as didall the lads. It was a really hard-earnedand satisfying win against a Batley sidethat have really improved this year, asevery Championship side seems to havedone.

If you look at a couple of tries that Batleyscored, that length of the field one beforehalf-time and the one late on, they’ve gotreally quality in their team and so for us togo there and produce a really clinicalperformance, especially on the back of atough run of fixtures, made it a happy busgoing home.

The Easter period can often make orbreak a team’s season and it’s interesting

to see that the RFL are to look into theschedule in consultation with the clubs. Asa player I’ve played Good Friday, EasterMonday and then the following weekendfor 20 years and it doesn’t get any easier. The risk of injury is always greater, especially in the third game because ofthe fatigue factor, and this year we’rerunning with a small squad.

It was gutting that Jonny Pownall pickedup a serious injury in the last home game.Jonny’s been outstanding this year andhas really enjoyed being back at Leigh. Hefaces a long recuperation and it’sdefinitely the down side to the game whenlads are injured like that. Happily, Gregg’sinjury wasn’t as bad as first feared andJosh Woods was able to play at Batleyhaving overcome his arm injury. ..............................................................

The re-signing of Ryan Brierleybrought another old Leigh playerback into the fold. Ryan was pleasedto be back and he showed somegreat touches in the Batley game aswell as his goal-kicking skills. You sometimes only appreciate somethingwhen it’s gone and maybe Ryan missedthe buzz of playing for his local clubwhere he built his reputation and was soloved by the fans. He’s got a chance torebuild his career and start enjoying hisrugby again and I’m sure the loan will bea ‘win-win’ for all parties.

Talking of players coming back JamesLaithwaite has done remarkably to playtwo full games after returning to thegame. James was really establishinghimself at Warrington when I was there

and was an automatic pick whensuddenly injury struck and he finallydecided last year to give the game up. Hemissed the game and being part of theteam environment and after training withus for a few weeks really got his appetitefor the game back. He’s a very goodplayer and he’s slotted in straight away.

Mind you any player that comes to Leighwill enjoy their rugby. The team spirit issecond to none and there’s a fantasticculture and atmosphere among the staff, players and supporters. It was great tosee all the Leigh fans at Batley and theirsupport was again outstanding. There’s areal buzz about the club at the momentand everyone is working hard to ensurewe enjoy a successful season.

Every game in the Betfred Championshipis a tough one and the visit of MarkAston’s Sheffield Eagles this afternoonprovides another tough test. Markrecruited well in the close season andhe’s built a really strong team that haveenjoyed some great results so far. We arecertainly in for a tough test but we aim togo in to a fortnight’s break on the back ofanother good performance.

After that the games come thick and fastagain, the Summer Bash, a trip toToulouse, the start of the 1895 Cup andthe visit of Halifax and Bradford before westart our run of games on the road whilethe pitch renovations are carried out. It’san exciting prospect and we know thatwherever we go the Leyther Army will becheering us on, I can’t tell you how muchthat means to the players and staff.

Enjoy the game, Micky

Sheffield Eagles visit LSV thisafternoon for a Round 13 fixture inthe Betfred Championship in thirdplace, two points and two placesabove Leigh Centurions with a gamein hand.Mark Aston’s side have won eight leaguegames so far with Ryan Millar and AnthonyThackeray already among the leading try-scorers in the competition.

Eagles enjoyed a great Easter with winsover Toulouse and Rochdale but wentdown 24-32 to Halifax in a thriller atOlympic Legacy Park last Sunday.

In an era where some clubs change theircoaches as regularly as some peoplechange their socks, Mark Aston’s longevityis remarkable. In 2016 he celebrated amilestone when he was at the helmagainst Swinton, the Eagles’ 500th gamesince their re-launch in 1999. Three yearson he’s still going strong assisted by theformer Eagles international centre KeithSenior.

During that time Aston has overseenpromotion and two Championship GrandFinal wins, including a famous 2013 grandfinal victory over Batley at LSV as well as ahost of other notable achievements.

Looking back on that landmark win atChorley back in 1999, when the re-bornEagles somehow scrambled a teamtogether, Aston said: “I remember plentyabout that because I lost my two frontteeth!

“I’d had 15 years as a professional and itnever happened, and then in the firstgame for the new club it did. It was

between Christmas and New Year and Ihad to go to the emergency dentist to putthem back in. We’d only had three weeksto get a team together, and when we gotto Chorley there was a problem with thekit and we had to play in their away shirts. But we won that first game – and whowould have thought that was possible?

“There are plenty of fond memories, andfrom there to where we are now has beena remarkable journey. There have beensome dark days as well, but bit by bitwe’ve developed the club over the years. We got to our first Grand Final and lost toKeighley and a dubious try, and then thelikes of Jordan James and Andy Raleighleft and we had to rebuild again.

“We got to the 2006 Grand Final wherewe beat Swinton, and then there’s beenthe progression that saw us become back-to-back champions in the Championship. I don’t tend to look back much; I’d ratherkeep looking forward and you forget howmany matches you accumulate. SheffieldEagles has always been a big part of mylife, and when we set off on this journeywe had nothing. I’m immensely proud ofthe achievements of the club during thattime, and it’s not only me – it’s guys likeIan Swire, John Whaling, Ian Anniss andChris Noble, who have been there fromday one as well.”

Reflecting on his notable 500-gamelandmark in 2016 Aston had one majorregret.

“The only downside is that we’ve come fullcircle in one way,” he said. “We built upour development system to the extentwhere we have players in the first-team

now that have come through ourscholarship. Now we find ourselves backwith just the first team due to the decisionnot to grant us a tier-two Academy side. You never think you will lose teams onceyou set them up and that’s been heart-breaking. But it won’t stop me starting itall up again, even if it has to be undersome disguise, because that’s what I’m inthis for.”

Last season Eagles trailed in eighth in theChampionship before the split with sevenwins in 23 games and finished sixth in theShield. No player reached double figuresin the try-scoring and their season tailedaway with five successive defeats.

Aston’s response was to oversee a bigchange in the Eagles playing staff over thewinter as he brought in Aaron Brown, JoshGuzdek and James Glover (Dewsbury), PatWalker, Jason Crookes, Joel Farrell andJames Davey (Batley), Rory Dixon (York),Sonny Esslemont, Louis Sheriff and LewisTaylor (Hemel), Anthony Thackeray andBrad Knowles (Featherstone) and BenPointer (Newcastle).

They have also recently linked up withLondon Broncos in a dual registrationpartnership that saw ex-Leigh forwardNathan Mason feature in the Eagles line-up.

Eagles bagged 96 points over Easter, but itwas the defensive side of their game thatimpressed Aston the most. He said: “Wehave scored nearly 100 points over theEaster period, which takes some doing, but defensively our attitude has been spoton.”

Last Sunday the Eagles suffered their firsthome defeat in the league this seasonafter going down to a narrow 32-24 lossagainst Halifax at the OLP.  Aston’s sidecouldn’t match the high standards set inrecent outings against Toulouse andRochdale, as Fax, eager to prove a pointafter coach Richard Marshall departed theday before, held their nerve for a notablewin.

The Eagles side on duty was: Guzdek; Millar, Glover, Dixon, Blackmore;Walker, Thackeray; Moran, G. Burns,James; Farrell, Davies; Brown.Interchange: Esslemont, Knowles, Mason, Davey.

The rise and rise of AthertonCollieries. Having recently clinchedtop spot in the Evo-Stik LeagueDivision One West, a third title win infive seasons, the black and whitesnow lie just two divisions away fromthe Football League.

Unimaginable from the days a decade ormore ago that a couple of mates and Iwould jump on to the 582 to downtownAthy for the odd North West CountiesDivision Two game. Revitalised on and offthe field in recent years, where to beginfor the ‘current’ Colls?

2013/14 had seen Colls finish fifth inNorth West Counties League Division One,with Alder House attendances dipping aslow as 40. In the summer of 2014, inwalked Micheal Clegg as the club’s newmanager. Optimism suddenly filled the air.The league title was clinched in seasonone, yet there was almost an air ofdisappointment after losing the LeagueCup Final to Northern Premier League-bound and serial Wembley FA Vase

visitors Glossop North End. An immediatestandard for the club to aim for on and offthe field.

Season two saw the black and whiteskeep pace with the Premier Divisionpacesetters right up until the final coupleof weeks of the season before eventuallyfinishing third, although there was stillglory to be enjoyed after a thumping 5-1League Cup Final triumph over championsColne at Fleetwood Town. In a campaignfull of attacking fervour, Colls hit the netan incredible 113 times in league gamesalone, with striker Mark Battersby centralto that success, hitting the 100-goal markby August 2016 in just 96 appearances.Batts was unfortunately forced to put hisfootballing career on hold after beingstruck by illness but is in regular contactwith fans and team mates alike and stillhopes to resume his career in the future.

The club’s centenary year in 2016/17may have seen the road to Wembley slipaway in heart-breaking fashion with a last16 FA Vase defeat to Cleethorpes Town,

but there was to be no end of seasondisappointment with silverware onceagain in the cabinet by virtue of thePremier Division title, secured after aremarkable 100 point, 103 goal season.

Consolidation was largely the name of thegame in 2017/18 with the first half of theclub’s Northern Premier League DivisionOne debut campaign being something ofa struggle, but an incredible turn of formin New Year culminated in a late-seasoncharge for the play offs and an historicNPL Challenge Cup Final victory overCoalville Town, joining the likes of BurtonAlbion, Wigan Athletic and AccringtonStanley in being engraved on the 50-yearold trophy.

There’s nothing like a bit of silverware towhet the appetite, and in perfectsymmetry to the NWCFL League Cup finaldefeat to Glossop North End in ‘seasonone’, ‘season five’ began in perfectfashion with two Ben Hardcastle goalssecuring a 2-0 win at Glossop.Hardcastle, one of several players,

# OURTOWNOURCLUB# LEYTHERS # OURTOWNOURCLUBincluding the aforementioned MarkBattersby, who has been alongside Cleggthroughout the club’s journey, would proveto be a real star of the season, scoringfour goals in September’s 9-1 win athome to Skelmersdale as Colls would goon to score a remarkable 89 league goalsin just 38 outings.

That victory over Skelmersdale merely setthe tone for the goalscoring form over theseason, with several high scores clockedup during the season including a 4-1 winover Prescot Cables, 6-2 over Mossleyand a six goal haul for Tom Benthambeing the highlight of eight goals withoutreply against Kendal Town, while thefamous Colls fighting spirit shone throughin September as a 3-1 deficit away toClitheroe was turned on its head with twolate goals sealing a 5-3 win.

A home defeat to title rivals Radcliffe, managed by ex-Premier League playersJon Macken and Frank Sinclair, no less, might have set nerves jangling elsewhere, but instead it merely focused minds as itwas followed by four consecutive victories– and a positive increase of ten goals tothe goal difference, just in case - to puttop spot firmly in sights, and with just onegoal conceded in the final five outings, thedefence took the lead of the famed attackto play in their part in crowning – yetanother - a historic season.

Special mention must surely go to GarethPeet. Forgiving brief sojourns to AshtonAthletic, Nelson and Skelmersdale United, this is a man who has seen it all in a Collsshirt, having made his first appearance in2010. As recently as April 2014 he wason the scoresheet in an 8-6 defeat (asyou do) away to Rochdale Town in front of22 spectators.

Fast forward five years and the left-wingerturned left-back, known throughout theleague for his tricky dribbles that havetormented many a right back whenattacking down the Skuna Stadium slope, scored the third goal in the 3-0 victoryaway to Skelmersdale in front of a near200-strong away support that put thechampagne on ice for securing the leaguetitle. A man who has mirrored Colls’ onand off-field progress like no other, performing with incredible consistencyand claiming four out of five ‘Player of theSeason’ awards at the traditional end ofseason celebration.

Joining Peet, Hardcastle and Battersby, the likes of defender Matt Grimshaw, goalpoacher-by-day-DJ by-night Jordan

Cover, Josh Messer and Jake Kenny haveall served the club admirably throughouttheir rise through the divisions, whileJames Kirby – ‘the only Colls player tocome from Congleton’, as the song goes– enjoyed success with Colls in the NorthWest Counties League and recentlyreturned to play his part in this season’stitle success.

Andy Heald, a familiar name to manyLeythers having previously played forLeigh RMI whilst also being a regularsupporter and sponsor of the Centurions, has made a successful transition from on-field veteran to joining Clegg in thedugout, not withstanding the occasionalthreat to put his boots back on!

Elevation to the Northern Premier Leaguehas brought challenges and attentionpreviously unheard of in the club’s history, with Colls taking on heavyweights alongthe way with the likes of ScarboroughAthletic and South Shields regularlydrawing crowds that wouldn’t look outplace in the Betfred Championship, while

there are few clubs that can match thenon-league pedigree of Hyde United orLeek Town.

Even the prospect of facing PremierDivision opposition week-in, week-outnext season is not one to face Clegg andhis squad, with higher division HednesfordTown and Coalville both dispatched incomfortable fashion last season en routeto securing the NPL Challenge Cup.

Not unlike John Duffy’s Centurions, thereis an emphasis on a close-knit squad oflocal players, retaining a bond with thesupporters and the countless hard-working volunteers – many Leighsupporters amongst them – who are thereal heroes of this rise and rise ofAtherton Collieries.

With the likes of FC United of Manchester,Lancaster City, Witton Albion and StaffordRangers heading to the Skuna nextseason and a reunion with Scarborough, who knows what could follow?!

Up The Colls.

LEIGH COMMUNITY TRUSTIn January 2019 Leigh Community Trust launched its‘Different Route’ programme funded by Wigan Counciland Wigan CCG to provide diversionary activities formen in the borough with long-term injury or illness. With over 40 referrals so far Wednesday mornings will neverbe the same, from intense chess matches, jigsaws, Virtualreality, darts and dominoes, Jenga, Karaoke and TableTennis to name a few. There is something for everyone!!

The sessions are also used as an opportunity to talk over teaand coffee to reduce isolation and provide diversionaryactivities.

You can be referred into A Different Route by your local GPor via self-referral.

Sessions are held on a Wednesday 10-12pm at LSV stadiumand due to increasing numbers there will be more sessionsadded so watch this space or visit our websitewww.Leighcommunitytrust.co.uk

If you are unsure about attending and would like moreinformation you can contact Steve Maden on 01942487847or email him on [email protected] and hewill be more than happy to talk to you.We have had greatsuccess so far with the programme working together withthe local council and the CCG via social prescribing to helptake the strain off local authorities and for third sectororganisations to take a real proactive approach in helpingthe local community. We are well on the way to achievingthis with A Different Route.

LEIGH COMMUNITY TRUSTWe spent a wonderful afternoon down at Wigan andLeigh Hospice last week, creating some wonderfulexperiences for the Oak centre patients using ourVirtual reality headsets. We had Swimming withdolphins, walking with dinosaurs, walking the coast ofCornwall, watching the northern lights and swimmingthe barrier reef. Yes, you read that right……

There are lots of wonderful possibilities where this technologyis concerned we have been delivering our ‘Life through aLens’ programme over the last 12 months to veterans whoare isolated in the Wigan borough. The programme wasfunded by the Royal British Legion.

When Leigh Community Trust was invited down to Wigan andLeigh hospice we jumped at the chance, the charity providescare free of charge to over 1000 patients with a life limitingillness every year. If our project can give an individual just amoment of respite and escapism or go a little way to tickingoff a bucket list experience then it was all worth it. Andjudging by the reactions I think we achieved that, there waslaughing, screaming (just at the dinosaurs), amazement, aweand surprise.

We had an amazing afternoon, thanks for inviting us down.

For more information regarding our Life through A Lensprogramme contact Dave on 01942 487 847 [email protected]

Well that’s been a very hectic fewweeks of rugby league. Four gamesin three weeks. Starting with thatincredible, spirited performanceaway at Hull KR in the Challengecup and ending with lastweekend’s win away at MountPleasant. Hopefully you all enjoyedyour rugby. Unfortunately, some of our lads havecome out of it worse for wear havingpicked up a few injuries, some of whichmight be serious. We’ve got a smallsquad this year and not much money tobuy new players. Every Leigh fan whojoins LISA helps to fund our team. Everypenny raised by LISA is spent on ourplaying squad. The more of you whojoin LISA and the more you donate thebigger squad we will have and the lessimpacted we will be by injuries. ..........................................................

We take on Sheffield Eagles againtoday, a team which has beenflying high in the Championship. We gave a good account of ourselves atSheffield in the Challenge Cup and willhopefully do likewise again today. We’ve played most teams now andplayed well against everyone. We’ve gota good team this year, all playing foreach other and fully committed to theclub. Our Saints dual code players havealso shown great commitment. So come on Leythers, lets do likewiseand support our lads home and away. ..........................................................

Coming up soon though we’ve goteven more rugby league! TheChampionship’s big weekend outin Blackpool. There’s been some great games andsome good laughs at the Summer Bashover the years and this year should bethe same. As always LISA are runningcoaches to Blackpool.
