what’s inside

eet our November cover artist, Maria Sharylen

Maria’s Gold Canyon studio is a feast for the senses! There you will find bold, vivid paintings and sculptures that come alive before your eyes, powerful images that illustrate the people of the world. Traditional, old world depictions of chil-dren playing and mother’s grinding corn into maize on stone pestles, taking their wares to the Mercados to help support their families. These are simple stories that will forever live on Sharylen’s bril-liant canvases and sculptures!

Maria Sharylen’s celebrated paintings and sculptures have been exhibited in numerous museum exhibitions and held in prestigious collections worldwide. She was the founder and President of both the National Academy of Women Artists (retired) and the distinguished fine art organization “The Other Side of the West”, and has been featured in numer-ous fine art publications nationwide.

“When I discovered the Southwest many years ago,” says Sharylen, “ I knew immediately I would dedicate my work to its depiction. It is such a blessing to do what I love and to be successful within this diverse, inspiring environment.”

On the cover Maria presents “Spirit of the Vineyard”. Visit Maria Sharylen’s online gallery at sharylenstudio.com or contact her at 480-474-2229.

f or over 30 years the Barleen family has delighted audiences with lively and entertaining dinner shows. This season they’re back bigger and better than ever! Barbara and Brenda Barleen and master musician George Staerkel along with the versatile Arizona Opry Band have 10 different shows in store for audiences this season. There are 4 different Variety Shows, Country Jubilee Shows, Old Time Rock and Roll Shows, Sunday Gospel Matinees, John Denver Tribute Shows, Comedy Shows, and Christmas Holiday Shows.

There are over a hundred instruments played during a show on the Opry stage of which at least fi fty are played by George Staerkel himself. One of a kind instruments are rare in the music industry, and George plays the “Bathorn” which is the only one in the entire world, and there will not ever be any more produced. Staerkel also plays Boots Randolph’s signature song “Yakety Sax” on the very same Selmer Mark VI tenor saxophone which Randolph had used to delight audiences since 1959. Collectors and mu-sic industry experts revere the Selmer Mark VI as the most sought-after vintage of any instrument ever produced.

Boots Randolph was the fi rst artist to play sax on recordings with Elvis Presley and the only one to ever play solo with him. He also recorded on the soundtracks of eight of Elvis’ movies. Randolph also played on such diverse recordings as Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman”, Al Hirt’s “Java”, REO Speedwagon’s “Little Queenie,” and Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Many other artists have added the “Yakety-Sax” touch

to their recordings including Chet Atkins, Buddy Holly, Floyd Cramer, Alabama, Johnny Cash, Richie Cole, Pete Fountain, Tommy Newsome and Doc Severinson.

Boots Randolph’s unique style of sax along with the tremendous popularity of his Music City Sessions in the 1960’s made him a major player in creating the famous “Nashville Sound.” The last letter written by Randolph was found in his management offi ce and was addressed to George Staerkel. It verifi ed the authenticity of their agreement and consignment of the famous saxophone. However, Randolph passed away before he had a chance to mail the letter. His son Randy found the letter and mailed it to George. He also included a letter to George fi nalizing the sale of the saxophone and wrote, “I hope you enjoy my father’s saxophone. I can only assume as he made arrangements for you to have it that it is going to a good home and that his legacy will be taken into consid-eration by you as you use it in your performances.”

Staerkel treasures the saxophone and the letters writ-ten by Boots Randolph and his son Randy.

Other celebrity horns at Barleen’s Arizona Opry include the trumpets of Herb Alpert, Al Hirt, and Doc Severinson, and also the tenor sax of big band legend Tex Beneke. Staerkel delights audiences with the hits songs of those famous horns.

The dinner theatre is owned and operated by George and Barbara Staerkel, a sister, Brenda Barleen, and a broth-

er, Benton Barleen. All of the celebrated entertain-ers are back from last season including vocalist Brad Fitch, the very talented entertainer who does the tribute to John Denver, Michael Hermsmeyer, an expert on the gui-tar, banjo, and mandolin and other string instruments, and multi-talented bass player Steve Weitz. Along with them some very special guests will appear including hilarious comedienne Ardis Larson, country guy and male comedian Mark Lucas, George’s father “Pop Staerkel” who is a tal-ented crooner, specializing in the “Rat-Pack” era music of the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Niece Jeri Ann Barleen and grandson Nathan even get in on the act in some of the shows.

If you would like to experience Branson-style entertainment and enjoy a delicious meal for less than the price of dinner and a movie right here in the East Valley, call the Arizona Opry for reservations at 480-982-7991. The Opry is located at 2275 Old West Highway in Apache Junction. Opening night is November 12 and this season’s shows run through Mother’s Day on May 8, 2011. s I approach the beautiful stone cottage nestled up against the spec-tacular Superstion Mountains, I get the feeling I’m in for something special. I’ve been near these mountains before, always awestruck by their powerful and majestic grandeur. But this time I’m here for a different reason. I’m visiting the studio of Gold Canyon’s own “jewel” and legendary artist Maria Sharylen, who has called these mountains home for well over a decade now.

Stepping into the small courtyard, I’m awestruck by the lovely ceramic tile mural (36”x48”) entitled Sicilian Sunrise, a scene of pickers beginning their day in the vineyard. The image absolutely transforms the patio wall into a work of art complete with move-ment, color, and a story. Once inside the cottage I feel both comfortable and visually stimulated by a large oil mural painted on wood (72”x72”) tryptych titled, “Homage”, hanging on the wall over the sofa. This mural pays tribute to the strong, spiritual women of the world who are gathered in a very special place, the vineyard.

I suddenly notice a new addition to Maria’s creative repertoire, a life-sized woman of bronze sitting quietly in the corner, reading a book titled “The Word”. The 24”x36” bronze has an ethereal quality and generates a peaceful feeling that fi lls the room. Not surprisingly, Maria’s bold, vivid paintings, porcelain tile murals and bronze sculptures evoke those same feelings. Maria is consumed with the creative process and her more recent works have evolved from impressionism to a more contemporary-realist style that best defi nes the vision for her “Women of the Vineyard” series of painting and sculptures.

“My desire is for the viewer to feel like they’re looking out a window to another time and place”, says Maria. “I try to catch the moment by presenting ordinary people in an extraordinary way. Each creation and image becomes very personal to me. I feel I know them all well. I say good morning to them when I go into the studio and my heart does a little fl utter when they leave, and since I’ve opened my studio I actually get to meet their new families and even visit them on occasion which is something I could never do before. I’ve made so many wonderful friends who have adopted my family of work. It really is a dream come true. I am truly blessed to be able to do what I love. It doesn’t get any bet-ter than this!”

Visit Maria Sharylen’s online gallery at sharylenstudio.com, or you may contact her by phone at 480-474-2229.

ids across America are growing, and some are earning, a lot of “green” participating in the National Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program.

This year, more than 1.5 million third graders in 45 states have gotten hands-on gardening experi-ence growing colossal cabbages with high hopes to win “best in state” and receive a $1,000 scholarship towards education from Bonnie Plants.

Each year Bonnie Plants delivers free O.S. Cross, or “oversized,” cabbage plants to third grade class-rooms, nationwide, whose teachers have signed up for the program, online at www.bonnieplants.com. If nurtured and cared for, cabbages can grow bigger than a basketball and tip the scales at nearly 40 pounds!

First launched in 1995, the program awards a $1,000 scholarship to one student in each participating state. At the end of the season, teachers from each class will select the student who has grown the “best” cab-bage, based on size and appearance. A picture of the cabbage and the student entry is submitted to Bonnie Plants by mail or online. That student’s name is then

entered in a statewide drawing. The winners of each state’s drawing are randomly selected by the Commission of Agriculture, state by state.

“The Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program is our way of engaging children in the joy of gardening”, said Stan Cope, President of Bonnie Plants. “Gar-dening provides children with a safe place to experi-ence nature, discover the cycles of life and develop an understanding of our environment. It also exposes children, first hand, to the benefits of growing your

own nutritious food and it’s a great source of physical activity. The cabbage program, over the past 15 years, has proved to be an enriching hands-on experience that kids and teachers across America have embraced. Seeing students excited about learning and the art of gardening is what we strive for”.

Green thumbs and perseverance can pay off, providing participating children with as great sense of pride and accomplishment, a humongous cabbage, and for the lucky state winner- the beginning of an educational fund for college. To see the 2010 winners and learn more about the 2011 contest, visit www.bon-nieplants.com.

Kids GROW GREENCashing in Cabbage

g ossd

Getting It GrowingGrowing a colossal cabbage may seem like a giant under-taking for little kids, but it’s easier than you think. All you need is:

Sunshine: Cabbages need at least six hours of full sunlight, more if possible.Space: Bonnie O.S. cabbages need at least three feet on each side to spread out. If you don’t have that much space, use a large container.Soil: Work some compost into the soil – cabbages love nutrient-rich soil.Food: Start your cabbage off right with an all-purpose vegetable fertilizer, then fertilize it every 10 days to keep

it growing strong.Water: Your cabbage needs at least one inch of rainfall each week. If it doesn’t rain, use a watering can or a gar-den hose to gently water your plant.TLC: Keep weeds out of the cabbage patch – they com-pete for the food and water your cabbage needs. Be on the lookout for brown or white moths – these come from worms that love to munch on cabbage. If you see any, get rid of them right away. Cold weather can damage your cabbage. If the weather gets below 32° F, cover your cab-bage with a bucket.Time: In just 10 to 12 weeks, you should have a huge head of cabbage you can be proud of.

imagine your life lived as a song to God! I think that is what the Apostle Paul was talking about when he said, or better put: when the Holy Spirit commanded through Paul

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as mem-bers of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admon-ish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him

(Colossians 3:15-17)

Imagine applying these verses with all your muscles and passion. Imagine living, talking, sharing with friends, going to church, working on your marriage, raising kids, loving grandkids, doing life – all of it with music in your hearts to God. All of it permeating with thankfulness. Doing all of it while being “umpired” by peace in your every move and decision. Imagine living life like this. It’s as if our Heavenly Father wanted us to have every day be Thanksgiving Day. It is as if God wanted us to spread the holidays to others through our lives year-round. God wanting us to extend the

same spirit and attitude throughout the whole year that we experience in November and December.

Imagine having peace umpire our lives and decisions. Imagine being thankful in whatever circumstance we fi nd ourselves in. Imagine Christ’s word making His home in you as you speak truth and sing with grace. Everything you do and say magnifying God and lifting Him up in your lives and relationships. It would be like singing your way through life. How could we ever do this? Is it even possible?

Paul gives us some clues: First, saturate your day with God. The wording behind vs.16’s “dwell in you richly” points to this. It is intentionally living your life as the truth of Jesus pours over you. Literally His truth is at home in your heart, it belongs there, feels comfortable there, is welcome there. Jesus doesn’t live out of a suit-case in your heart, He belongs and feels welcome. That is saturation. Your mind thinks about Him. Your heart loves Him. Your will obeys Him. You see His blessings in the good things you receive. You recognize His total control in the surprises and the unexpected. You pursue Him and realize His loving pursuit of you. You are set-ting your mind and heart on Jesus and His ways. That is saturation. Do that and you are well on your way of living life with grace singing in your heart.

Next, make sure you are congregating with other believers. This section of Colossians like the others is written to a church, not just one person. You are part of a bigger picture and included in Christ’s bride. In verses 15 through 17, Paul carefully chooses his words to include: “hearts” and “members” and “one another” and “hearts” again. Three short verses chock full of plurality. What a church where its members commune regularly with God and worship Him and then when they come together they are being umpired by His peace and teaching each other and singing to each other and for each other and at each other and thankful for each other. It is the song of God in your hearts that al-lows you and empowers you to say the right thing at the right moment in the right way!

Lastly, communicate with grace in your hearts. Grace is always a gift and therefore it is not deserved and can’t be earned, it is a gift. So you pray and ask for grace upon grace to help you deal with every circumstance and with every person you have to deal with. When you saturate, congregate, communicate and celebrate Jesus amongst yourselves to each other – your lives together are a chorus of faith sung to God. I get the feeling He likes that song!

Q: Will the US Mint ever offer Proof Silver Eagles again?

A: GOOD NEWS! The US Mint just released a notice that they will be offer-ing the Proof Silver Eagles again THIS year! According to their website (http://www.usmint.gov) “2010-dated one-ounce American Eagle Silver Proof Coins will be made available for sale on Novem-ber 19 starting at noon Eastern Time (ET). The price of the coin will be $45.95 plus shipping and handling”. “The coin was not available in 2009 because of high demand for the United States Mint’s American Eagle Silver Bullion Coin. Legislation mandates that American Eagle Silver Bullion Coin production take precedence over the nu-mismatic version of the coin. Economic conditions drove investor demand for the United States Mint’s silver bullion coins to unprecedented highs in both Fiscal Years 2009 and 2010.”

Q: Is there any update on the law requiring 1099’s to be issued when we sell our gold and coins?

A: There have been two attempts to overturn this provision of the health care bill. Both have failed. At this time the provision is still scheduled to go into

effect starting January 2012. However there is still hope that it will be changed or deleted after the November election.

Q: I received a penny dated 2002 in change that is differ-ent. It is not made of copper. Can you tell me what it is?

A: Pennies (properly referred to as cents in the United States) have not been made of copper since 1982. Starting in the latter part of that year the composition of the cent was changed to zinc with a thin copper coating. Sometimes an uncoated blank makes its way into the minting process. This is most likely what you received. If it is in uncirculated condition it could sell for around ten dollars.

Taking Care of Older Loved Ones

dear Chris,I love my father very much, but caring for him is tak-

ing so much out of me. I don’t have as much time for my other family members, friends or myself and I am begin-ning to get resentful about it. He lives nearby in his own home, but he’s lonely and uses a cane since recent ankle surgery.

Sometimes he is so sweet but other times he is very stubborn and difficult. He thinks clearly and has a great memory, so it makes me think he doesn’t care that he is making things worse for me when I am helping him. What can I do to change this?

Regards, Overdone

Dear Overdone, Having an adult family member rely mostly on you is dif-

ficult. On one hand, you love and care about them and want them to do as well as possible. On the other hand, you are the only one primarily responsible for your own life.

Let’s look at a few things to consider when taking this responsibility.

First of all, it’s not very pleasant to have to depend on someone else for your welfare. It’s hard to accept or even to understand. This combined with fear of losing more con-

trol over their lives, added to the probable loss they’ve had that led them to this situation can be devastating. It’s hard to think clearly, or even care about things they normally would have cared about. So try not to take it personally.

Compassion is what led you here. It helps to under-stand them to the best of your ability.

Since your father is not accepting your help well, it may help to sit down and have a serious talk. Maybe you or another loved one can acknowledge how hard this must be for him. Explain that he is in a stage of life where he needs to be aware of his health and state of mind.

There is a shift that needs to be made and you are asking that he take care of himself as much as he can, including cooperating with you. Strategize about how he can be active, productive, healthy and optimistic. Something that also needs to be discussed is what you are willing to do and not willing to do, and setting specific days and times for visits.

Your quality of life and your other loved ones that are affected by this situation are just as important. Each life comes with limited time and opportunities. Your father got the opportunity to live his according to his choices - and you should too. Once you set the boundar-ies with him, the only way he will probably accept it is for you to: Stick. To. Your. Guns. Don’t make excuses or try to convince or argue.

Sometimes there are other family members who can help, even the kids! Maybe they can visit once a month or take him out to do something active. If financial support is in order, maybe family members can mail you a check for a small amount each month, or give you a sum of money to invest in your loved one’s care.

Care facilities are often necessary, since not every-one is qualified to care for the physical and emotional needs of another. Be careful not to take on responsibility that is not rightfully yours.

Allowing confrontation and negativity into your life is not good for anyone. You’ll be better to your father if you set your limits while still having compassion.
