Seniors - Newsletter June 2018

The Board of Directors would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused on our 20th Anniver-

sary Celebration when we had to close the washrooms

due to the toilets overflowing.

This has been a problem for some time. Our septic tank is very old and too small for our building now. The Town will be hooking us up to the town sewers this summer so we have been told. In the meantime we would appre-ciate it if you use the washrooms please only use toilet paper and hold the handle down until the toilet is com-

pletely flushed.

President’s Message

I would like to thank Bruce and Elaine and their teams for their preparation work well in advance. It was unfortunate that we forgot to announce that the Craft Room and Wood Shop was open for your viewing. Gertrud

Smart Ideas No more messy cakes To keep a layer cake from slipping while you ice it, push three sticks of dry spaghetti through all the layers. Remove spaghetti when the icing is set. Clean stained coffee cups When coffee stains your favorite mugs, it’s a snap to get them clean again. Simply sprinkle baking soda on a clean, damp sponge, rub on the dis-colored area, let sit for a few minutes, then rub again until the stain is gone. Store Strawberries It’s strawberry season! To keep them fresh place them unwashed in a col-ander and store in your fridge. They’ll last for five days. Wash just before you serve them. Grocery Shopping I’ve found a great way to keep my groceries from toppling over and spill-ing out in my car. I put two laundry baskets in my trunk. When I’m done shopping, I put the bags inside the baskets. They stay put, and when I get home all I do is lift the baskets out of the car. Fresher Pound cake Make that fresh-baked taste last long-er by cutting from the middle, not the ends, then ”sealing” the cake by pressing the cut sides together. Save a salad bowl To keep wooden salad bowls from cracking, wipe them inside and out with a paper towel soaked in cooking oil. Do this in the evening and next morning, wipe away excess oil. Instant pet hair removal! Dryer sheets work like a magnet for fur. Just wipe one over clothes or up-holstery, and pet hair lifts right off. Odor remover Can’t get the smell of freshly peeled garlic off your hands? Just touch something made out of stainless steel, the scent will disappear.

Old Age Jokes I was turning 40 and decided to cel-ebrate by fulfilling my dream to go sky-diving. Before the jump, my mother and I spent the day at a festi-val, where we bumped into two of my cousins. They inquired about my upcoming birthday, and when I told them about my jump from 10,000,ft. I could tell they were a bit mystified. Finally one of them remarked, “Why don’t you just get your breasts done like everyone else?”

Emotionally Painful

My husband was bending over to tie my three-year-old’s shoes. That’s when I noticed my son, Ben staring at my husband’s head. He gently touched the slightly thinning spot of hair and said in a concerned voice, “Daddy, you have a hole in your head, Does it hurt?” After a pause, I heard my husband’s murmured re-ply: “Not physically,”

Eyeglass Tips

Jim, my 40-something husband, was playing basketball with friends his age. “Pretty soon,” said one of his teammates, “we’ll have to count it as a basket if the ball just hits the rim.” “Yeah,” Jim agreed. “It’s scary when you have to look through the bottom part of your bifocals to shoot layups and the top part on jump shots.”

Fat Chance

Having fought the battle of the bulge most of my life, I found the battle getting even harder as I approached middle age. One evening, after try-ing on slacks that were too tight, I said to my husband, “I’ll be so glad when we become grandparents.

After all, who cares if grandmothers are fat?” His prompt reply: “Grandfathers,”

Outside of Frankfurt and the state of Hessen, there is little awareness of Hes-

sen’s official state beverage. Hessen is in fact Germany’s largest wine producing region, famous now for wines produced along the Rhein such as Riesling. However most people don’t realize that as recently as 1900 there were almost no grape vines in the region after Europe’s 400 year mini ice age and a pest, grape phylloxera, 250 years ago that destroyed the remaining vines. The colder weather did however encourage sturdier apple trees to thrive and wine producers turned to apples instead. As a small Child I grew up with apple cider, later on it was fermented apple cider which could be quiet strong (5%to12% alcohol). Gertrud

Fat Plate

To celebrate his 40th birthday, my boss, who is battling middle-age spread, bought a new convertible sports car. As a finishing touch, he put on a vanity plate with the inscription “18 Again.” The wind was let out of his sails, however, when a salesman entered our of-fice the following week. ”Hey,” he called out, “who owns the car with the plate

I ate again’?”

Were you one of the 120 or so guests who attended our

20th Anniversary celebration on April 28th? If so, thanks for coming! Special thanks to our speakers: current Mayor Keffer, former Mayor Jonkman and Sylvia Luxton, and to our other special guests: Maria Pfeiffer and Pat Ledlie. Gertrud and Jan would like to take this opportunity to also thank every-one who helped with food, decorations and set-up for the party. The Centre looked bright and shiny; there were excellent static displays by the members of the craft room, the wood shop, the Varga Artists, Judy Tomlinson, and Gertrud Erdenberger, as well as digital displays on the TV (Peter Blakemore) and projection screen (Elke Pitkin and Mike

Agosta). Thanks also to Judy McCoubrey, Terry Chisolm (hard acts to fol-low), and the Goldenaires for providing live entertain-ment, and to Bev Fulford

for making the cake. We hope you all enjoyed our trip down Memory Lane. See you at the 25

Goldenaires for June 2018 Newsletter

The Goldenaires have completed another successful year of music and fun. On Tuesday, May 15th

we travelled to Beeton for our annual spring concert at Simcoe Manor. Our musical numbers includ-ed a medley from the musical “Oliver!”, the old English folksong “Scarborough Fair”, a modern Cape Breton folksong called “Song for the Mira”, and a rockin’ rendition of “Splish Splash/Sea Cruise”. Judy sang a medley of songs from “The Sound of Music” and Ingrid led the residents and Goldenaires in a sing-along of familiar tunes.

The very next day, we were invited by the Women’s Institute to perform at the Tec-We-Gwill hall in Newton-Robinson. I hope the neighbours will forgive us for parking all over the place!.

Our last concert of the year was at Bradford Valley on Tuesday, May 22nd

, where we extended our program to include readings by Sid Jackson and Bill Bishop. Singing for and with the residents, the staff and their family members is proof that “Music Brings Us Together”. We are now taking a break for the summer.

Goldenaires: if you still have music sheets in your binders, you can drop them off at the Danube office or hold onto them until we start again in September. Jan Evans

Wood Shop Report If your looking for a special gift our wood shop has wooden cutting boards in a variety of sizes and styles, also some bird feeders available for sale. Monday and Wednesday mornings 9am to 12pm.

BOUTIQUE NEWS We have had many new members in the Danube so far this year and they

may not be aware of the Boutique. It is in the back behind the stage and we sell gently used ladies and men’s’ clothing and footwear. They are for sale to our members at a very reasonable price and all the money we make goes directly to the Centre. We are a friendly group and welcome you to come in and browse. The Boutique is open Mon. - Fri. from 9AM - 3PM.

I would like to thank all the members who have brought in items for us. At this time our shelves and racks are full. Please hold off bringing in things until the first week in June. Thanks for your under-standing. Olga Bishop
