Leighton Village Hall COFFEE CLUB
Leighton Village Hall are busy organising a COFFEE MORNING WITH A DIFFERENCE on
Saturday 15th
November 9am – 12noon (see poster on page 3). Lovely cafe/ere coffee will
be served in gleaming new china coffee cups with croissants and newspapers and music, all
the idea of our treasurer Tony Garre2 and his lovely wife Sarah of Chapel House.
THE PERFECT WAY TO START YOUR SATURDAY.
There will be a draw so any draw prizes gratefully received, please contact Garre2s on 01938 580533. The new
Sound System and refurbished hall will be fully opened for everyone to browse so please call in for a cuppa – you
will be made most welcome. Tea will also be served so everyone is catered for!
Funds will be shared between Leighton Village Hall and Macmillan Cancer Support.
IMPROVEMENTS There’s lots of things going at Leighton Village Hall this month. Due to a further generous
dona/on of £19,000 from James Po2er through the Entrust grant system, for which we are
very grateful, Leighton Village Hall is preparing to repair and resurface the floor which will
benefit all of the users and spruce the main hall no end, although sadly it will be shut over the whole of half term
to enable this work to be done. LVH appreciate the understanding of the hirers. New curtains will then be added
and the Sound System will be fully func/onal. It is also hoped that all of the outstanding finishing touches will be
completed by Sneades the builders comple/ng this stage of the improvements.
OUTSIDE SHEDS Plans are being drawn up by our Chair David Williams for a new large Playgroup shed and a
concrete base to be put down for the School shed. Hopefully this work will also be
completed over half term.

WITH CHRISTMAS ON THE HORIZON, IT’S TIME TO SHARPEN UP OUR BRAINS FOR ALL
THOSE SEASONAL QUIZZES. SO, TWO QUESTIONS—AN EASY ONE, AND ONE THAT
YOU MIGHT FIND HARDER TO ANSWER.
FIRSTLY, THE EASY ONE:
WHAT DO THESE TWELVE PICTURES HAVE IN COMMON?
THEN THE HARDER ONE:
WHAT DOES EACH PICTURE SHOW?
ANSWERS ON PAGE 9

In recent issues we have heard something of the bravery of Stephen (Sam) BeaMe,
who was born here in Leighton and who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his
part in breaching German defences at St Nazaire, on the Loire, during World
War Two.
This is HMS Quadrant, one of eight Q Class destroyers which took part in defending Arc/c Convoys, the
North African landings and the bombardment of the Nicobar Islands. Soon aer the end of World War
Two she served as a troop carrier between New Guinea and Australia.
She was then loaned to The Royal Australian Navy before being re-fi2ed in 1950 as a fast an/-submarine
vessel. Later that year she was transferred permanently to The Royal Australian Navy and when she was
recommissioned in 1953 she was under the command of Captain Stephen Halden BeaMe! He led the 1st
Frigate squadron, having 4 sister ships of Quadrant under his command – Quiberon, Queenborough,
Quickmatch and Quality. Quadrant acted as an escort ship to The Royal Yacht Gothic when the Queen and
the Duke of Edinburgh visited Australia in 1954.
So Captain BeaMe served Australia as well as the United Kingdom, but he moved on again to become the
Senior Naval Officer in the Persian Gulf and worked as a Naval Adviser to the Ethiopian Government in
1965 before re/ring to Mullion in Cornwall.
He died in 1975 and is buried in Ruan Minor Churchyard. He clearly led a brave and adventurous life and
saw and served much of the world. He is a man of whom Leighton can be truly proud.

We are living in a woodland area so readers of The
Leighton News might like to know about Canopy Tree
Care who felled two large difficult trees near the
church. They are contractors for the Arboricultural
Associa/on. Their quote for felling the trees was
accepted from amongst other quotes. Everyone is very
pleased with the result.
They had to be felled unfortunately because they were
causing trouble with the founda/ons and drainage.
