Inaugurating the event, Sh. R. Bhattacharya, Secretary (SE&L), MHRD, GoI applauded the NIOS for getting ISO certification. He urged the NIOS to introspect on the quality of services rendered and work towards providing education which will lead to peaceful and sustainable development. Shri Y.S.K. Seshu kumar, JS & DG- NLMA, MHRD appreciated the efforts of the NIOS in extending opportunities to learners who wished to complete schooling. He stressed on the importance of streamlining the efforts and role played by NIOS study centres & examination centres. Sh. J. Alam, JS, MHRD, GoI and Chairman, NIOS in his welcome address explained the growth of the NIOS from a project to become the largest Open Schooling System in the world. The NIOS was awarded the ISO 9001:2008 Certification in accordance with the TUV INDIA Auditing and Certification Procedures. NIOS celebrates 26th Foundation day

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) celebrated its26th Foundation day on 23rd November, 2014 at Manekshaw Centre,Parade Road, Delhi Cant., New Delhi.

‘NIOS Connnect’, a mobile app designed and developed by NIOSfor the benefit of its learners was also launched on the occassion.The NIOS also became the first Education Board in the country toenrich its website with Online Student Support Services for providingonline services to its learners.

In recognition of the services rendered by NIOS study centres, theMukta Vidya Awards were conferred on the Best Study Centres andBest Co-ordinators. Following are the details:

The National Institute of Open Schooling organised a Pledge TakingCeremony at its headquarters at NOIDA for effective implementationof the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan launched on 2nd October, 2014, theBirth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Sh. J. Alam, Joint Secretary,MHRD, GOI and Chairman, NIOS led the staff in taking the ‘SwachhtaShapath’ (Cleanliness Pledge) at the NIOS Headquarters, NOIDA.After the pledge taking ceremony, a cleanliness drive wasenthusiastically undertaken by the NIOS staff as part of the initiative.The objective was to ensure cleanliness and hygiene in the NIOS

campus, and inside the officecomplex. The motivation andenthusiasm of NIOS employeeswas visible by their activeparticipation in cleanlinessactivities, reflecting the need forkeeping cleanliness not only in theoffice premises, but at home, in theneighbourhood and in publicplaces and moving towardsrealizing the vision of ‘SwachhBharat’.

NIOS has also written to its 6700Study Centres to follow the SwachBharat Abhiyan and to organisethe activities to motivate the NIOSlearners for keeping the countryclean.

NIOS observes RashtriyaEkta Diwas (NationalUnity Day)

The National Institute of Open Schooling celebrated the BirthAnniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas(National Unity Day) on 31st October, 2014 at NIOS Hqs., NOIDA.The Rashtriya Ekta Diwas provided an opportunity to reaffirm theinherent strength and resilience of the nation to withstand the actualand potential threats to the unity, integrity and security of the country.The day began with the Rashtriya Ekta Shapath (National UnityPledge) which was taken by the NIOS staff and learners. In order toinvolve the NIOS learners on Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, variousprogrammes were organised, which included a jingles/songcompetition on Unity, Integrity, Safety and Security, a Paintingcompetition on topics such as Swachh Bharat, Swasth Bharat,National Integration and Incredible India and sports events.

Welcoming everyone present on the occasion, Mr. C. Dharuman,Secretary, NIOS spoke about the the importance of the day and thesignificance of taking any pledge with an aim to follow and imbibe itin the right manner.

Dr. Kuldeep Agarwal, Director (Academic), NIOS led everyone tofollow the pledge and oriented all present in the Atrium about thesignificance of the day andcontributions made by SardarVallabbhai Patel in the glorioushistory of the country.

After the ‘Pledge’ takingceremony, learners from Shikhar,an Accredited Institute of NIOSperformed a group dance on thesong “Desh Mera Rangila” whichgave a true picture of our country’sunity despite its diversity.

Learners were given theopportunity to participate in sports,painting and jingles/songscompetitions. The first competitionin the sports category was the 100

Hindi FortnightCelebrations

The Hindi Fortnight wascelebrated from 15-29 September,2014 at NIOS headquarters,NOIDA with enthusiasticparticipation of NIOS staff indifferent programmes andcompetitions.

The celebrations began on 15 September, 2014 with the Hindi DayProgramme. On this occasion, Heads of Departments of the NIOSaddressed the NIOS staff and encouraged them to do most of theirofficial work in Hindi and follow the orders issued by the Departmentof Rajbhasha, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

During this period, competitions organised for the NIOS staff included(i) Knowledge of Official Language, (ii) Computer based HindiKnowledge, (iii) Extempore speech, (iv) Quiz, (v) Hindi Dictationand (vi) Essay writing.

More than 150 NIOS officialsparticipated in differentcompetitions, and First, Second,Third and Consolation prizes andcertificates were awarded to thewinners. All the officials who hadparticipated but did not win anyprize were awarded participationprizes and certif icates. TheRegional Centers of NIOS alsoorganized similar competitionsand programmes during thisperiod and sent their reports to theRajbhasha Section.

The Hindi Fortnight Celebrationsconcluded on 30th September,2014, with a prize distributionprogramme at NIOS, NOIDA. Prof.Geeta Sharma from the Central Hindi Institute was invited as theChief Guest. Prof. Geeta Sharma appreciated the efforts made bythe NIOS to promote Hindi. While sharing her experiences with theaudience, she said that Hindi is a very popular language and itdeserves much more importance in Govt Offices.

began with speech and painting competitions in which learners fromdifferent study centres of NIOS and Open Basic Education (OBE)Agencies participated with full motivation and joy.

In the category of competitions, Joyful Learning and My FavouriteTutor were the topics for speech competition. Twenty two learnersparticipated and performed very well with accurate use of languageand content. Their confidence in themselves and devotion towardslearning was quite visible. Forty five learners participated in thepainting competition organized under the theme Joyful Learningand Studying with NIOS. Paintings of learners made the atrium verycolourful. Their creativity and love for learning was visible in thedrawings made by them.

The occasion also provided an opportunity for NIOS learners toattend the live Webcast of the Honourable Prime Minister, SriNarendra Modi’s speech. While interacting with millions of studentsand teachers across the nation, Shri Modi spoke about theimportance of teachers and emphasized on the the need for creatinggood quality teachers in the country who could be ‘exported’ to theworld. Addressing the students, Shri Modi said that children cancontribute to nation building by maintaining cleanliness, savingelectricity and water. He remembered Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, whosebirth anniversary is celebrated as Teachers’ Day every year. Theinteraction ended with a great applause from the school communityand the country at large. The speech of Shri Narendra Modi remindedus of our duties towards the learners and towards the nation as awhole.

Thereafter, Dr. Kuldeep Agarwal, Director (Academic), NIOSwelcomed all present including Mr. C. Dharuman, Secretary, NIOSand Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Director (Student Support Services),NIOS, staff of NIOS, tutors, and learners. Emphasizing the importanceof Teachers’ Day in today’s context, Dr. Agarwal highlighted keyideas from the speech of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri NarendraModi and said that the creation of a learner centered environmentand pursuing life-long learning are the key success factors of oureducation system. Recalling three ideas from the Hon’ble PrimeMinister’s speech– Learning is more important than teaching, Useof technology for delivery of educational programmes andImportance of Skill Development, Dr. Agarwal said that these ideasaptly describe the work that NIOS is doing.

The programme ended with a dance performance titled “Desh MeraRangila” by the learners from 'Shikar Hunar Programme'.

MITRA conducts Induction Programme andWorkshop

MITRA, the Adolescent Friendly Centre of NIOS, Regional Centre,Bhubaneswar conducted an “Induction Programme and Workshopon Growing Up” for the learners of NIOS at Govt. SSD High School,Badabharandi, (AI No: 410034) Nawrangpur, Odisha on 27thSeptember 2014. A total of 60 learners from AI No: 410034, 410022and 410109 participated in the programme. Five Coordinators/ Tutorsof NIOS Study centers also attended the workshop.

This workshop concluded by emphasizing on the need to developskills to respond to stressful situations more positively, importanceof relationship and to be aware of various emotions that youngpeople experience through life, especially while growing up. In theconcluding session, the focus of the workshop was on effectivecommunication between the adolescents and their parents and tutorsso that they appreciate each other’s concerns.

Workshop on Stress Management

A one day workshop was conducted by Ms. Asheema Singh PC(AEP) on Stress Management for the officials and staff of RegionalCentre Bhubaneswar on September 6, 2014. Based on therecommendations of the analysis of the question paper, orientationof Paper Setters of all the Life Skills enriched subjects was carriedout on the Concept and Techniques of Evaluation. 26 experts fromDelhi, Pune, Ambala, Chandigarh, Assam, Mohali, Meerut, Raipur,Mathura, Bijnor and Bagpat, 10 Academic Officers, 5 resourcepersons and 4 AEP staff participated in the programme. Theobjectives of the workshop were to sensitize the Question Papersetters on issues and concerns of adolescents and introduce themto life skills; orient them for developing balanced question paperand minimizing the subjectivity in public examination; and to prepareMarking Schemes and Keys. The Hindi Fortnight Programme concluded on 29th September, 2014.On this occasion Dr. S.N.Sharma, Assistant Commissioner, KVS,Bhopal was the Chief Guest. The Chief Guest in his address focusedon various easy characteristics of hindi and its ability to adopt certaincharacteristics of the languages. He also recited some of his poems.

Dr. A.K. Sharma, Regional Director, Regional Office, Bhopal stressedon the need for Hindi correspondence with the Headquarters, studycenter coordinators, and other offices. He said that most of the NIOSlearners come from deprived sections of society and are unable todo their work in any other language than hindi. He said that thereforeall staff should do more and more work in hindi.

A poem recitation competition was also organised for the staff of theRegional Office.
