Dear Lely Families and Friends,

We held another amazing Red Walk this year! We would like to take this time to formally thank Mr. Greusel, the Related Arts Team, and all of our teachers for the hard work and extra time that they put into this event. The students had a chance to give back to our community by planting flowers, singing at Discovery Village, helping the South Regional Public Library decorate for the fall, writing letters to those who are ill in the hospital and to our troops overseas. The students also packed over 45,000 meals for Meals of Hope! It was simply amazing to witness the excitement in our students sharing their Super Powers of Giving!

Thank you to all of the families who participated in our 3rd Grade Show-case and first Title 1 Parent Involvement Workshop, focused on Reading. We had a packed house for this wonderful event!

Mark your calendars for our next meeting on November 10th starting at 5:30: The 2nd Grade Showcase will WOW you! And the workshop, “On our Best Behavior,” will get you talking to your children about being the best that can be at home and at school.

November 10 will also be a special day because we will have a very spe-cial guest, Mary Beth Geier from the Richard Schultze Foundation, as Prin-cipal for the Day!

Every Student Matters, Every Moment Counts

Hello LES Families!

It is hard to believe first quarter has come and gone! Teachers and staff are work-

ing hard at keeping students actively engaged and learning, and time is flying by so

quickly.

So far this year, understanding vocabulary has been a big focus in all subject

areas. If students do not understand the meaning of the words they are reading, than

they are probably not able to grasp the message of the text. Teachers and many parents

know that one way to increase a child’s vocabulary is to read more. Children who read 20

minutes a day are exposed to 1,800,000 words a year! No wonders children who read

more score higher than their fellow classmates.

But did you know that you can also greatly increase your child’s vocabulary by

simply talking and having a conversation with them? According to a study done by the

University of California, Los Angeles, “Back-and-forth conversation contributed the most

to the child’s future language score (six times more so than adult speech alone).” This

research really shows how language development is so important to your child’s success

in reading and writing.

In these digital times, children seem to be having fewer and fewer conversations

with others. Here at school, teachers are using cooperative learning structures to get

students talking about their learning with classmates. When children are out of school,

take advantage of the time you are with your children to have conversations with them.

Dinner and traveling in the car are perfect times for asking your children what they are

learning about in school. But be specific. For example, instead of saying, “What did you

learn in school today?” say, “What did you learn about in science today?” If your child

responds with, “Plants,” you can respond by saying, “Give me an example of something

you learned about plants.” Having your children explain more is a great way to continue

the conversation. Do this daily, and not only will you feel more aware of what your chil-

dren are learning in school, you child will know their education is important to you.

Title I Plans (Use of Funds) SPAR Report School Improvement Plan

According to the Florida Standards for Mathematics (MAFS), fact fluency is the ability to

quickly and accurately recall the answers to basic math facts. Fact fluency is achieved

through deliberate and repeated practice. The National Council of Teachers of Mathe-

matics (NCTM) states that applying known facts to derive unknown facts results in

efficiency, flexibility, and an understanding of number combinations for young students.

How do we help students develop fact fluency? FASTT Math is a program which our

students in 2nd through 5th grade use to improve their math facts. Our 2nd grade students

begin to fully use the program in January. FASTT Math also has a feature called Stretch-

To-Go which allows students in grades 3-5 to play math fact games from home. Students

can use Stretch-To-Go games from anywhere there is a computer with Internet access.

Don’t forget that students can always practice their fact fluency at home using flash

cards for a few minutes each day. A good idea would be to add fact practice to your

child’s daily routine along with their independent reading!

Schools collaborative event. The conference offers a variety of training, educa-

Library Procedure

We are thrilled with your support of our media center and the

time you spend with your child reading each day. Our Media

Center circulation has been super this year as well. In the midst

of the circulation, sometimes a student will lose a book. Our

book fine policy is simple. We ask that you pay the cost of each

book to replace it in our library. If you do pay for a book and

then later find the book, please keep the book and add to your
