CONCEPTThe duplicitous nature of the project, conceived through a multiplicity of interior and exterior conditions, attempts to create spatial and constructional uncertainties that call to question the distinction between the digital and analog within architectural applications. Through the application of paper pulp to a routed surface, the surface definitions inherent in the mold are masked by the pulp’s natural tendency to cover detail. From the exterior, the artifacts of fabrication are visually lost. Questions of construction reemerge, however, after the imposition of a strong hard edge to the project, the pathway. The precision and detail of the pathway, generated as a section cut, gives thickness to an otherwise planar project. It acts visually as the surface’s interior while simultaneously cultivating the discrepancies between its own digital construction within its “random” frame. While the overall ceiling reveals little of its origins, it isn’t until one investigates further into the surface fissures that the pathway as an interior is broken down. Unlike the exterior, the real interior of the project still bears the marks of fabrication. Known as the “moments of reveal”, the fissures expose a second interior condition where it begins to interact in a way that triggers confusion and blur the distinction between the exterior and the double layer of interiors.
DESIGNAs one moves through the project, these multiple conditions are experienced simultaneously. The three surface conditions were generated from the computer scripting language of grasshopper. The exterior’s stark rigidity and very cave-like texture contrast with the soft glow and vibrant color of the path. The difference is further exacerbated through the project’s invitation for contact and the pathway’s acoustic qualities. The pathway’s characteristics push the distinction to the point of separation. From outside the pathway, the cut gives the surface thickness. From within the path, this thickness is broken down. The two spaces collide through the framing of the surface’s interior.
CONSTRUCTIONThe 3-axis CNC router was utilized to generate a three dimensional styrofoam mould from a digital parametric model. The paper pulp consisting of a 1:1 mixture of newspaper and vellum was applied to the surface of the styrofoam mould and later removed to leave a structural shell of paper pulp. Paint is applied to create the distinct surface conditions. Because of its strength to weight ratio, the surface can be held by fishing line to a sub-structure. The additional of lighting completes the ceiling.

EMERGINGINTERSECTIONS
The redesign of the US District Courthouse in Manhattan utilizes petal architecture in a new way. Original petal architecture has a center with separate, distinct petals stemming from it. This design incorporates three centers with eight programmatic petals growing into each other, creating a unified building. At these intersections, the space opens up with two atria creating large, open public interaction spaces. There is a secondary system of petaling that extends past the envelope of the courthouse that highlights each courtroom from the exterior of the building.
In the courthouse there are three different types of occupation: public, judge/staff, and prisoner. Reflecting these occupancies, there are three separate circulation routes in the courthouse that keeps the three groups completely separate until they all meet in the courtroom for a trial.

COMMUNITYIN THECUT
The Dequindre Cut in Detroit is an old rail line that has been converted to a greenway connecting the Eastern Market and the waterfront. Sunk just over two stories below the street level, it is used year round by bikers, runners, and the rest of the community for various activities.
The apartment building and community work space offers an affordable place to live for all members of the community. With one to six bed apartments of various layouts, anyone can find what they are looking for. Through the center of the building are large open work areas with shop tools, welding areas, vent hoods, and collaboration spaces. But the main focus is on the community kitchens and dining areas on almost every floor that are open to the public and encourage a sense of community between the tenants and the rest of the public.

RE-EMERGINGLIBRARY
Along Woodward Avenue, Detroit is slowly disappearing. Many vacant lots and dilapidated homes are scattered up and down this main artery of Detroit. This new Detroit Public Library aims to revitalize the area and draw in more people to the city and the surrounding neighborhoods. It wants to show the rest of America that Detroit is not a lost cause, that it will re-emerge and become the once great city that it was in the past. The library seems to emerge from the ground to passery-bys along Woodward Ave. It features an image of the Spirit of Detroit on the street side and the skyline of downtown Detroit overlooks the neighborhood behind the library. The library also acts as a community center by offering a cafe, interior and exterior lounges, a small theater for presentations and lectures, and classrooms.

OUTSIDE -IN
The Hajj Ishmael Institute for Stillness in Motion is to be a gathering place for college aged people and younger. It will act as a lounge and a place to hangout in addition to the exhibition and theater space. Admission will be free to view the art and to see any concert, play, or movie screening. The institute is to be a community place of learning and enjoyment and by putting a price on that will defeat the purpose of the institute. It will feature contemporary and street art, both on the interior and exterior of the institute. The idea is to bring in the mentality and lifestyle of the street artists. The act of interiorizing street art is to focus it within one insitute and make it easily accessible to all. It introduces a new context for street art that may create new forms of the practice. The fellowship artists featured in The Hajj Ishmael Institute for Stillness in Motion will include graffiti artists and other street artists who use the urban landscape as their canvas to create murals, sculptures, or other forms of art. It will also feature up-and-coming musicians from college campuses around the world. The institute will welcome anyone interested in the sport of parkour. The roofscape is designed in such a way to encourage running and jumping across, over, and around. This act in itself will be featured as a performance art and draw in even more visiters to The Hajj Ishmael Institute for Stillness in Motion.

In order to find yourself within this space, one must first allow themselves to get lost. By navigating the intertwining pathways you find yourself starting to circulate through the space, all the while discovering something new at every turn and climb.
