The site of the Kountry Kitchen restaurant, located in the 1700 block of Old Dixie Highway, has an unusual ownership history. The building was built May 1926 by an automobile dealer. Leroy Davis was born in Nebraska and arrived in Okeechobee about 1917. He then moved to Indian River County in 1925 and started selling automobiles for the East Coast Overland Company. Back then, the building contained a salesroom, showroom, general accessory department and a garage. A filling station was also available. The building was described as “a stucco structure finished in the Spanish type with a commodious filling station at the front.” They boasted of the conveniently located rest rooms for the patrons. In the showroom they had models of Willys-Knight and Overland cars. By 1941, the building of the now-defunct automobile business was available for purchase. The American

Legionnaires foresaw a need for a club house due to the increase membership at the close of the war. In 1944, the building was deeded by the city to the Felix Poppel Post American Legion. The place was renovated and furnished through rummage sales and other sponsored events. It was at this time that they converted the front room into meeting quarters equipped with chairs, fireplace and venetian blinds. The back portion was converted into a kitchen.

The American Legion continued to use the building until 1985 and it then became a pizza place for a few years. In 1991, the Kountry Kitchen opened for business and it changed owners three times. Today, Mark Santangelo is your host and he runs a very popular community place where everyone seems to know your name.

• Attention, tourists: Did you know you have a “cultural concierge” at your disposal? The Cultural Council of Indian River County wants to help you discover what we have to offer under the “Arts” umbrella. “The cultural arts are very, very important in this community,” said Barbara Hoffman, who has served as the council’s director since 2011. If you visit to the Cultural Council’s office at 2041 14th Ave. in downtown Vero Beach, you’ll see there’s no shortage of entertainment options available. The council’s Big Four: Vero Beach Museum of Art, McKee Botanical Gardens, Riverside Theatre and the Vero Beach Theatre Guild. But the “cultural concierge” – usually Peg Witte, an

administrative assistant – will try to arrange anything within reason. Need tickets to a performance by the symphony? It’s just a phone call (772-770-4857) away. Hoffman said someone recently called from another country wanting to arrange a shopping trip and a nice dinner. They made it happen. Of course, you don’t need to be a tourist to take advantage of the “cultural concierge.” Locals can use the service, too. As the Cultural Council’s marketing slogan says, “Arts Matter.”• An indication that the economy is improving can be found in statistics from the Tax Collector’s Office. In December, the number of people purchasing a new vehicle or moving to the county and registering their vehicles was 19,728. Compare that to 17,453 in December ’13. Brenda Bradley, the office’s chief of staff, also noted a sharp

increase in the number of people purchasing hunting/fishing licenses – 300 in December vs. 182 the previous December.• Gail Williams, the owner of Sunshine Furniture, bristles when she sees an article that states you don’t have to pay sales tax on Internet purchases. “That’s not true,” she said. “You do have to pay taxes.” As I told Gail, I did not know that was the case. (How about you? Did you know you have to pay a 6-percent tax when buying something on the Internet?) She showed me a letter Florida Department of Revenue sent to her. It wanted to collect the taxes due on an Internet purchase she made. “Brick-and-mortar businesses no longer need to fear the Internet,” she said. • Tell me again why the main post office would want to clog up the pipeline, so to speak, by not opening until 9 a.m., effective April 1. (It currently opens at 8:30. I’m there every Monday before 9, and Van is a whiz at processing the 500 to 700 copies of Lemmon Lines I mail to various households.)

To those who will be in line after me starting in April, I apologize in advance!• Rita Richter called with some good news: The Roseland-based group SOS Cookies – or, Send Our Soldiers Cookies – will receive a brief mention in the book “Be Safe, Love Mom: A Military Mom’s Stories of Courage, Comfort, and Surviving Life on the Home Front” by Elaine Lowry Brye. The book is set to be published March 31.• So I crossed paths with Lila Jeanne Bussey outside the Carpet & Tile Warehouse, and she mentioned her 90th birthday is fast approaching. (Background: Lila Jeanne recently teamed up with 20-year-old Eric Behymer to start a new business called Estate Treasures.) Back in Issue 10, I described Lila Jeanne as a “firecracker” because she is one of the most energetic octogenarians I’ve ever met. “Woo hoo!” Lila Jeanne said about her upcoming milestone birthday. “If you think I’m not going to celebrate, you’re wrong.”

Overlooked cinematic gems

As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:

• Cheap Thrills (2013, NR, directed by E.L. Katz). What’s the worst thing you’d do for money? That is the question asked, and answered in this indie black comedy. Craig (Pat Healy) just lost his job and is worried for his family. While drowning his sorrows at a local dive bar, Craig runs into an old school buddy (Ethan Embry). Later they hook up with a morally bankrupt, yet filthy rich, couple (David Koechner and Sara Paxton) who challenge them to a series of dares for money. With each new dare, the danger (and the payout) increases. Will the two friends survive the night?• Paperhouse (1988, PG13, directed by Bernard Rose). Anna Madden (Charlotte Burke) is an 11-year-old girl with a very active imagination. Unhappy with her home life,

Anna daydreams of a mysterious house, which she meticulously illustrates in her notebook. She begins to dream about the mystery house, and it’s even more mysterious occupant. However, when the events in her dreams begin taking a foothold in reality, things take a turn for the worse.• Wolfhound (2006, R, directed by Nikolay Lebedev). Volkodav iz roda Serykh Psov as it is known in Russia is a sweeping fantasy epic,

much in the vein of “Conan The Barbarian.” Wolfhound (Aleksandr Bukharov) and his trusted companion (who happens to be a bat) roam the country in search of the man responsible for the death of his parents and the annihilation of his tribe. Full of beautiful scenery and lots of great battle sequences, this Russian epic is sure to appeal to fans of Tolkien-inspired fantasy. Mike Bushman is owner/operator of Recycled DVDs, located at 937 Seventh Ave. (behind Chili’s restaurant) in Vero Beach.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 431. “The Warrior”(1984) ScandalMemory: In doing some research, I was surprised to learn this song hit No. 1 in Canada but made it only to No. 7 in the United States. 430. “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman”(1967) Aretha FranklinMemory: A classic in every sense of the word. Several other artists have recorded this song, but Aretha’s version is still the best.429. “Candida”(1970) Dawn, featuring Tony OrlandoMemory: It’s hard not to sing along with this song, even though I’ve never met anyone with the name of Candida.

Vero Beach’s population through the years …
