Chapter 1. Installing ThinkAgile SX for Microsoft Azure Stack hardware in a customer rack

This topic describes the procedure for installing the ThinkAgile SX for Microsoft Azure Stack hardware in a customer-supplied rack.

The Lenovo ThinkAgile SX for Microsoft Azure Stack Customer rack solution ships shrinkwrapped on several pallets depending on the number of nodes. Customers should have their supplied rack, PDUs, and PDU cables placed and installed in the data center before installation. Customers also need a Phillips screwdriver to install the server and switch rails.

Attention: The cartons containing the ThinkAgile SX for Microsoft Azure Stack solution components should be opened only by your organization’s authorized hardware installer.

Step 1. Locate and open the box labeled Open This Carton First. Inside, there is a blue binder and a Read Me flyer.

Important: Lenovo Professional Services needs the blue binder to deploy the solution, as the binder contains the MAC address for each node. Ensure that the blue binder is available when you engage Lenovo Professional Services.

In addition to the hardware installation guide URL, the blue binder provides rack locations for installing the nodes and TOR switches, and contains the cabling diagram.

Attention: The binder also contains stickers to apply to the rack with a Lenovo serial number for the ThinkAgile SXM solution. This serial number is required for service entitlement. Have this serial number available when making Lenovo service calls.

Figure 1. Example service label

Step 2. Before installing the servers in the rack, mount the server rail kits shipped with the servers into the rack. The hardware and instructions for the switch rail kits are included in the Customer Rack Accessory Box labeled Open This Carton First.

Step 3. In the sequential order labeled on the cartons, mount the server or switch contained in the carton to the rails installed in the rack. Each node and switch has an ID label that matches the diagram indicating their placement in the rack (for example, U1, U3, U5, and so on).

Step 4. After installing all the servers and switches in the rack, locate the cabling harness in the box labeled Open This Carton First. The ends of the cables on the wiring harness are labeled with source and destination details.

Step 5. Using the point-to-point wiring diagram included in the blue binder, connect the various nodes to the BMC and the TOR switches using the “from” and “to” locations on the labels.

Page 8: Lenovo ThinkAgile SX for Microsoft Azure Stack Customer ... · • Do not block any air vents, usually 15 cm (6 inches) of air space provides proper airflow. • Do not leave open

Step 6. After all of the Lenovo hardware is interconnected, connect the nodes into the PDUs with the power cables supplied with each of the nodes.

Step 7. After the rack is fully cabled, start all the switches and servers in any order.

Step 8. Allow several minutes for the switch NOSes to load and the servers to run their boot sequence. Then, ensure that a “green-light check” is performed to confirm that there are no immediate hardware issues to address before Lenovo Professional Services arrives for deployment. All connected NIC and switch ports should show a proper Link status. There should be no amber warning lights lit on any device. If any amber warning lights are present, refer to the Lenovo Support Plan at https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht505267 for details on contacting Lenovo Support for your issue.

Note: Although no operating system is installed on any of the compute nodes, the hardware lifecycle host (HLH) prompts to deploy its boot image. DO NOT proceed with this prompt. Lenovo Professional Services will deploy the HLH.

Step 9. After completing the green light check, shut down all servers and switches until Lenovo Professional Services arrives to deploy the Microsoft Azure Stack.

Step 10. If not already done, establish a time for Lenovo Professional Services to arrive onsite to deploy Microsoft Azure Stack. Again, the blue binder mentioned previously must be available to the deployment team to begin deploying the solution.

Install ThinkSystem SR630 and SR650 in a rackThe procedures for installing the ThinkSystem SR630 and ThinkSystem SR650 in a rack are the same.

Read these guidelines firstReview the documentation that comes with the rack for safety and cabling information. Before you install the server into a rack, review the following guidelines.

• Install the server in a rack that meets the following requirements:

• Minimum depth of 70 mm (2.76 inches) between the front mounting flange and inside of the front door.

• Minimum depth of 214 mm (8.43 inches) between the chassis rear wall and inside of the rear door.

• The maximum distance between the front mounting flange and the rear mounting flange is 864 mm (34.00 inches).

• If you want to install the rails and a 0U PDU into the same rack, the rack must meet the following height and depth requirements:

• 42U or higher

• At least 1000-mm (39.37-inch) deep

• Install the server only into a rack that has perforated doors. Remove the rack doors and side panels for easier access during installation.

• Plan the device installation starting from the bottom of the rack. Install the heaviest device in the bottom of the rack.

• See the server Maintenance Manual or Setup Guide for the requirements on room air temperature.

• Do not block any air vents, usually 15 cm (6 inches) of air space provides proper airflow.

• Do not leave open space above or below an installed server in your rack. To help prevent damage to server components, always install a filler panel to cover the open space and to help ensure proper air circulation.

• Do not extend more than one device out of the rack at the same time.

• Do not overload the power outlet when multiple devices are in the rack.
