PROJECTOVERVIEWIntern:JacobLenzMajor:BiologicalSystemsEngineeringSchool:UniversityofNebraska-LincolnCompanyBackgroundTysonFreshMeats,thecountry’slargestbeefprocessor,wasfoundedin1935.ThisreportwaswrittenfortheTysonplantinLexington,NE.Lexingtonprocesses4,500headaday,5to6daysperweekandtheirproteinproductsaresoldworldwide.TheplantwasoneofthefirsttoshiptheirbeefproductstoChinainthesummerof2017,aftera14-yearindustrytradefreeze.ProjectDescriptionTysonFreshMeatsisdedicatedtobecomingassustainableaspossibleandrecognizesthestrainexcesswaterandenergyusagehaveontheenvironment.Thecompanyrecentlymadeaninitiativetodecreasetheirenvironmentalfootprintbyreducingtheirtotalwaterusage12%by2020.Lexingtonhasbeenontracktomeetthatgoal,howeverfurtherwaterconservationintheplantisrequiredleadingtoaportionofthisproject’sfocus.Tysonalsowantstoreducetheirwasteoutputwhichisthesecondfocusofthisinvestigation.Thepurposeofthepollutionprevention(P2)opportunitiesaretoallowTysonFreshMeatstoreducetheirwaterusage,productloss,andresourceusagewhichinturnwillprovidefinancialbenefits.PollutionPreventionBenefitsFourpollutionpreventionopportunitiesarerecommendedinthisreport.Recommendationsincludeconvertingcurrentknifesterilizerstomorewaterefficientmodels,replacingnozzlesinthecarcasswashcabinettoawatersavingsystem,purchasingnewlowflowratespraygunstoreplacethecurrentnighttimecleaningnozzles,andconvertingthecurrentbloodcollectionsystemtoanewalternative.Thecostofimplementationvariesoneachrecommendation,howeverthepotentialsavingsaresubstantialandmostrecommendationshaveapaybackperiodlessthantwoyears.Table1isasummaryofallthebenefitsofimplementingtheproposedpollutionreductionopportunities.
