!!!!October!5,!2012! Shelby!Stevens! Page!4!!Have you ever wondered who keeps the front office up and running? Maybe you wondered who signs your notes or arranges your schedule. We caught up to Mr. Baumgartner, Mr. Woods, Mrs. Whitley, and Mrs. Roberson in the office to see just what they do in there. Here’s what we found out… !!

Mrs. Whitley Mrs. Whitley has worked at Allen East for 13 years. She is the secretary to the High School principal Mr. Baumgartner. Also, she is a Senior Class Advisor. Mrs. Whitley has two kids that go to Allen East; one is a 7th grader and one 4th grader.

Mrs. Roberson Mrs. Roberson has worked at Allen East for fourteen years. She is the Guidance Secretary for Mr. Woods, the Attendance Secretary for Mr. Baumgartner,

and the assistant athletic director. Mrs. Roberson is also the faculty manager and a senior class advisor. All of her kids have

graduated from AE.

Mr. Baumgartner Mr. Baumgartner has worked here at Allen East for 5 years. He is the principal grades 7-12.Plus; he is in charge of Special Education in the school district. Mr. Baumgartner has two kids that go to Allen East, an 8th grader and a 6th grader.

Mr. Woods Mr. Woods has worked at Allen East for a whopping 26 years! He is the Guidance Counselor and is in charge of OGT testing. Mr. Woods in on the AVID committee, and has two daughters that go to AE and one that graduated; a sophomore and a junior.

Homeroom&

!!!!!!October!5,!2012! Trisha!Drury! Page!5!!!!! Ever ask yourself, “Why do we even have homeroom?” What is the point of it? Do you feel like you should be able to sleep in for an extra 15 minutes? The 2010-2011 school year started the new idea for having a homeroom. Students have to be in homeroom at 8:17am and stay until 8:28am. The homeroom teachers take attendance and hand out papers such as picture forms, announcement papers, or etc. The first two years the announcements were stated aloud during this time, but now there are no announcement said. They are all posted online and the students are to read them on their own time. Many students, however, do not read these announcements. Therefore they do not know what is happening in the school. The teachers in the first class should take attendance because they usually check who is missing anyway. If students get more sleep then they will be more alert. Most students say that there should not be a homeroom. They say that the school day should start off with

homeroom. Others say that homeroom should just be

shorter. Most of the time in homeroom is spent just sitting around talking. It takes approximately 2 minutes or less to look

around the room to see who is all at school. Grant Criblez said, “We should not have homeroom, they can do all of that stuff in first period. If we do that then I can sleep some more.” On the other hand Bren Emerson stated, “I like homeroom. It gives me and other students the chance to get homework done and get help from teachers on something that you don’t understand on your homework. It does not take time out of important classes in the morning.” Many teachers also feel like it is a good idea because it doesn’t take time out of their

class period. In first period they might not be able to get things done because it is being shortened by doing the things in first period that we could be doing in homeroom. We talked to the principal Mr. Baumgartner about this. He said that we

started homeroom

because attendance and announcements were cutting into first period way

too much. We still have homeroom because it gives time for coaches or groups to have meeting during that time. At this point in time they are not going to do away with homeroom. Even though some of the students are against homeroom because they want more sleep, there are still good reasons to keep it.

Brass 10/5/12 Ian Slone Page 6

The Mustang Brass has made some major excitement in the stands these past couple games but this week they made the venture to Paulding High School for the football game Friday night. Although that will be an exciting event for the Mustang Brass, the Ohio State Invitational is what has really been getting the Brass pumped. This whole season the Brass has been hard at work trying their best to improve themselves for the overall performance since the Allen County Fair Show. They have been playing songs like Evil Ways, At the Hop and Wipe Out and these have been major crowd pleasers.

The Mustang Brass will be attending the Ohio State Marching Band Invitational on October 13, 2012. They will be leaving the school at about 9:30 a.m. and preforming at about 1:30 p.m. They will really have to push it that Saturday after the football game on Friday.

We interviewed Bryce Bishop from

the Brass Council and here is what she had to say. “We have been doing very well in this Brass Season, although there is a lot of room for improvement seeing the review videos ever Monday and seeing the scores. With this fact it is agreed by many that there is a lot of work to be done before the Ohio

State Invitational on October 13th. Other than all of these facts I think we have been having a great year by all of the reactions of the audience and all other people there at the games.”

We talked to

a couple of the seniors that are in the Brass and they have confirmed that they will

be missing all of the times in the Brass with many members of the program. All of the seniors have been excited for Friday 12th because it is Senior, Parents, and Breast Cancer Awareness night for the Brass and they will be putting on a very spectacular show for their night of acknowledgement for them as seniors and the Brass as a whole.

As a team, the total score for the sectional tournament was 335. It was a working day for the guys taking the top four scores from each school. Freshman Kayne Richardson came out strong and scored an 83. Lucas Herrmann scoring an 86 worked well with his team as Parker Frey shot an 85. Senior Tanner Richardson scoring an 89 and Senior Clay Plaugher scoring an 81. These two seniors have been great leaders teaching and showing confidence in one another. We have had a chance to talk to both seniors, Tanner Richardson and Clay Plaugher. Here is what they had to say:

The Allen East Lady Mustangs Soccer Team is 5-6-1, and they are working hard this year and hustling to try to bring home an extraordinary amount of wins. We got the opportunity to see how all of their hard work and drive is paying off. Let’s check up on those speedy ballers of the field.

!

Last Saturday, September 9th, 2012, the soccer team played against LCC at the Lima Senior. The starters were: Jadin Salyers, Michaela Jenkins, Kyra Plaugher as keeper, Claudia Rettig, Erica Fox, Shelby Stevens, Savannah Silone, Cheyenne Bierly, Abby Joyner, Alexis McClure, and Trisha Drury. The final score was LCC with 3 and Allen East with 1.The Mustang goal was scored by Jadin Salyers. It was a beautiful day and the girls put in a tremendous effort. Alexis McClure also got a chance to play keeper during this game and she did a phenomenal job trying to keep shots away.

The Lady Mustangs will be facing Cory Rawson on Thursday, October 4th, 2012, at home at 5pm. This night will also be Parent’s night and the team will support the effort for curing breast cancer that night by wearing pink socks. Let’s all make an effort to go out and support the Lady ‘Stangs and cheer them to victory.

The soccer Team went against Ft. Jennings on Tuesday, October, 2nd, 2012. The final score was Fort Jennings with 3 points and Allen East with 0. The starting lineup for this game was: Jadin Salyers, Michaela Jenkins, Claudia Rettig, Erica Fox, Shelby Stevens, Savannah Silone, Cheyenne Bierly, Whitney Miller, Kortni Rooker, Trisha Drury, and Kyra Plaugher as keeper. The team put forth a great effort, but a series of faulty penalty kicks affected the Mustangs score negatively. They still need a great job and are improving amazingly. There were many good attempted shots and saves by the team and the keeper, Kyra Plaugher.

This week the Allen East Junior High Volleyball Team played Bluffton, Columbus Grove, and LCC. They have been working hard and winning some games. We had time to sit down with Sawyer Stippich, an 8th grader on the team, and here is what she had to say.

The junior high team played The Bluffton Pirates last Thursday. They seventh grade won in 2 games and done by quite a few points. Unfortunately, the eighth grade lost in two games. Tuesday, they played Columbus Grove and although it was a tough fought match the seventh and eighth grade both lost. The seventh went in to three games losing the first and third game by just a few points and winning the second by a lot. The eighth grade, again, lost in two. Wednesday they played LCC, seventh grade coming out with the win but eighth grade losing. The seventh grade record is now 8-2 and the eighth is 0-10. The tournaments start this Saturday. Seventh grade was ranked 1st seed and will play the winner of Bluffton and Crestview at 2pm. The eighth grade will play Paulding at 11 am. The tournament is a single elimination and will be held at Spencerville High School.

This is what she has to say:

Q: Hey Kiersten! How is your cheerleading season going? Are you enjoying it?

A: Yes of course! I love it! Cheerleading is my favorite sport.

Q: What are your all t ime most favorite things or memories about cheerleading?

A: My favorite things about cheerleading are my squad. I love them all! My most memorable moments are all of our hard work preparing for competition and then going to the Allen County Fair and winning first place!!!

A: I am excited to hopefully cheer on Friday nights of Saturday mornings and just to move on with the other high schoolers.

Q: Is there anybody you look up to on the high school cheerleading team or is there anybody that inspires you to cheer?

A: Yes! My coaches Kourtney Reneau and Brooke Brinkman really inspire me to cheer. And I really look up to Haley Joseph on the high school cheer team.

Q: If you could do only one cheer for the rest of your l ife, which cheer would it be?

A: If I could only pick one I would pick “S-C-O-R-E score Mustangs score”

Q: We hear that you are in the Loud and Proud Mustang Brass. How is Brass going for you this year? What instrument do you play?

A: I love the Brass! I thought that I wouldn’t because of the high schoolers, but it turns out, I love it! I play the F trumpet.

Q: This was your first year of brass camp. What did you think about it? What are some tips of survival for the underclassmen getting ready to join the brass next year?

She was kind enough to give up some of her time to answer some questions about her new position here at Allen East high school.

Q: What made you come to Allen East?

A: I have family in the area and I’ve heard great things about Allen East. Then when the job came up I thought I would make a good fit.
