Texters Suffers Neck Pain

Many of us look down at smartphones

throughout the day, some for hours --

and this head position is damaging our

spines. The human head weighs about a

dozen pounds, according to a 2014 story

in the Washington Post, and when the

neck bends forward and down, it adds

weight to the cervical spine.

When bent at a 60° angle (looking down),

the added weight is about 60 pounds, the

article notes – kind of like carrying a

second-grader around your neck.

The result? Text neck. The catchy name

refers to a variety of ailments arising from

this poor posture, including neck pain,

shoulder pain, headaches, upper back

pain, and more.

Experts recommend adjusting the

position at which we view our screens,

whether it's holding our phones higher or

using our eyes more often to look down

rather than bending our necks. Take

frequent breaks.

You can combat text neck with a number

of stretches and strengthening exercises

designed to keep your head in alignment

and strengthen the muscles that hold it

up and in the proper position. These

include anything from turning your head

to the left and to the right, chin tucks, or a

multitude of yoga poses like downward-

facing dog or cat-cow (on all fours,

alternating between straightening and

rounding the spine).

Why Us? Why Here? Why Now? We offer a judgment-free zone around our practice -- no one is judged here, only treated with compassion and kindness!

We have relaxation techniques and strategies that are customized for each patient!

When you invest your time with us, you know that we will honor your schedule, and we will do our best to stay on time, rather than waste your time like other places do!

Since Dr. Anglis delivers all of your dental implant treatment under one roof, you don't have to travel from office to office to complete your care! It's very comforting to know that you will see all of the same, friendly, familiar faces each time!

And, while other dentists may only go as far as Chicago for their continuing education courses, our doctor travels across the United States, and to Lisbon, Portugal, and Barcelona, Spain for his studies with the originators of complex dental implant treatment.

Only the best will do for our family of

patients!

We all understand that you have many choices when it comes to your dental care, and we are honored that you have selected us to serve you and your family! So many of you have sent your friends to us, and we remain humbled. Often times, people might ask: Out of all of the other choices, why should I come to Dr. Anglis?

You might be surprised to know that over 50 dentists and their family members come to Dr. Anglis for their dental care–he has become the Dentist's Dentist!

That's because we deliver customized, individualized treatment -- there is no "cookie-cutter" approach here -- each one of you has your own smile to be transformed into a Masterpiece!

We have the most current technology -- our systems are state-of-the-art, but we haven't lost the "human touch" of dentistry. Our "hometown warmth and understanding" surround our dynamic treatment!

Have you ever thought about making an

all-purpose cleaner, laundry detergent, or

drain unclogger that didn't have so many

harsh chemicals in it? There are plenty of

options to do so that are easy,

inexpensive, and -- perhaps best of all --

that actually work!

Here are some tips for household

cleaners:

• Vinegar, baking soda, water, and your

favorite essential oil can clean almost

anything around the house. And some

of us never tire of the way the baking

soda and the vinegar fizz up when they

• Lemons make a great disinfectant and

garbage disposal to freshen things

up, and you

salt to scrub

your wooden

cutting board.

• Tea Tree oil is

considered

among many to be an effective

antibacterial and antifungal ingredient,

and you'll find it in a host of natural

cleaning products.

• Try making a homemade laundry

detergent with some combination of

baking soda, washing soda, castile soap,

and your favorite essential oil (like

lavender). There are tons of variations

Simple Steps Can Help Keep Vision Healthy for Life

The delights of vision can hardly be

overstated and it's worth taking a look, so

to speak, at problems that can harm your

vision.

That's why the American Optometric

Association started Save Your Vision

Month way back in 1927. Professional

eye care, through regular exams, they

say, is important at every age.

Here are some of the major causes of

vision loss and harm:

Disease:

For diabetics, diabetic retinopathy is an

ever present possibility. More than 40

percent of adults with diabetes have

some form of retinopathy which, at its

most serious can cause complete vision

loss. There are treatments and people

with any type of diabetes should get a

comprehensive dilated eye exam at least

once a year.

Glaucoma - Caused by a cluster of

diseases that damage the optic nerve.

Cataract - Clouding of the eye lens.

Treatment is quick and easy if discovered

early. Get eye dilation exams.

Trauma:

According to the American Academy of

Ophthalmology, 2,000 workers per day

suffer injuries to the eye. About 40

percent of these occur in the construction

industry. In fact, the Academy says that 90

percent of on-the-job eye injuries can be

avoided with the proper eye protection.

Always wear safety glasses suitable for

the situation; face shields might be

required for working around chemicals, for

example, while respirators with a full face

piece would be required for working in

situations where dust flies and air quality

is questionable, such as in below-ground

work. Safety glasses with foam or rubber

around the lens might be required around

flying particles.

Dry Eyes:

While dry eyes do not result in the loss

of vision, adults are frequently bothered

by this condition. It can be caused by

menopause, low testosterone, or

through the process of aging.

Symptoms include: gritty pain, itching,

blurry vision, redness and light

sensitivity.

Certain medical conditions related to

thyroid, vascular diseases and

rheumatoid arthritis can cause dry eyes.

Daily eye drops are always

recommended in these instances.

Special drops and certain surgeries can

relieve severe symptoms.

Computer Eye Strain:

Red, dry, itchy eyes can often be traced

to digital screens. For computer work,

position your monitor 25 inches away.

Eliminate glare on digital screens. Try

floor lamps with full-spectrum

fluorescent light. Adjust your monitor

brightness to match the brightness of

the room.

Corneal Abrasions:

They can occur by accident from a

fingernail or mascara. A pain reliever

can help. Some serious abrasions are

caused by contact lenses. See a doctor

about how to prevent infection.

PREPARATION

Preheat oven to 350°. Toast hazelnuts on a rimmed baking sheet, tossing occasionally, until golden brown, 8–10 minutes. Let cool, then chop.

Meanwhile, toss rhubarb, sugar, Cointreau, and lemon juice in a medium bowl. Let sit until rhubarb is slightly softened and releases its juices, about 30 minutes. Toss with strawberries, mint, and hazelnuts.

Toss with pistachios and tarragon just before serving.

DO AHEAD: Beets can be marinated 2 days ahead. Cover and chill.

Dealing with Seasonal Allergies

The impending arrival of spring also means

the arrival of sneezing, sniffling, and brain

fog for millions of people afflicted with

seasonal allergies. Many people take

prescription or over-the-counter medicines

to treat them, but you can alleviate

symptoms through a number of methods.

The Mayo Clinic offers a variety of tips to

help people deal with allergies. They include

minimizing your exposure by staying

inside on dry, windy

days to delegating

lawn mowing duties

and making

sure to NOT

hang laundry

outside.

Spring Break in the Music CityDINING Eating and drinking are high on the list of priorities in Nashville, so start your day off with a great breakfast. If the weather is nice, enjoy a mimosa and breakfast entrée on the patio at Hillsboro Village’s Jackson’s Bar & Bistro, 12South’s Urban Grub, Midtown’s Tavern, or SoBro’s The Southern Steak & Oyster. Looking for more of a quintessential Southern breakfast? Try Music Row-favored Pancake Pantry, downtown’s Puckett’s Grocery, or the true Southern down-home Loveless Cafe. Wash it all down with a gourmet coffee at local favorite Fido or Frothy Monkey.

For Lunch, check out places like Monell's, Arnold’s Country Kitchen, and Swett’s Restaurant for a quintessential meat & three experience. Nashville’s most notable contribution to the Southern culinary culture, hot chicken restaurants, including Prince’s, Hattie B’s Hot Chicken, Bolton's, and 400º, let you choose the level of spiciness of your chicken. If you are craving something lighter, stop by the Nashville Farmers' Market where you can grab a lunch of Greek, Mediterranean, Jamaican, Middle Eastern, Mexican, Asian, or Southern fare. Take your food next door to the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, a 19-acre park that houses a wide array of exhibits detailing Tennessee’s history, and have a picnic.

For an authentic taste of Nashville, head to some of the locals’ favorite neighborhood spots for dinner. Places like Pepperfire Hot Chicken and Butcher & Bee in East Nashville, Burger Up and Edley’s BBQ in 12South, Saint Anejo and Kayne Prime in The Gulch, and Von Elrod's and Rolf & Daughters in Germantown offer an eclectic mix of atmospheres and cuisines that provide a diverse sampling of what Nashville has to offer.

SHOPPING

Hillsboro Village, conveniently located near Vanderbilt and Belmont Universities, is a collection of shops, boutiques, and restaurants perfect for a

morning stroll. Peruse Fire Finch, Posh, or Pangaea for unique jewelry and gifts. The 12South district is a pedestrian-friendly area with restaurants, coffee shops, and boutiques such as White's Mercantile, Imogene+Willie, a blue jeans shop loved by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow. Just over the Cumberland River is East Nashville, an artist's and vintage shopper’s haven. This area is home to several galleries including the Art & Invention Gallery and adjoining studio, Garage Mahal, as well as vintage shops including Goodbuy Girls, The Green Wagon, and Hip Zipper.

FUN IN THE SUN Spend the afternoon wandering through the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, explore the interactive exhibits at the Adventure Science Center, see over 150,000 flowers bloom at Cheekwood Estate

& Gardens during Cheekwood in Bloom, or hit the water slides at Nashville Shores Lakeside Resort whose season begins in May. The Treetop Adventure Park, an aerial adventure course that is located in Nashville Shores, includes 10 zip lines, cargo nets, ladders, and other thrilling elements. This two and half mile path goes through the woods under a shaded canopy of trees which brings you up close to nature and the abundant wildlife that calls Fontanel home. Have fun in the sun at the Running of Iroquois Steeplechase at Percy Warner Park which happens the second Saturday in May. The Iroquois Steeplechase is the premier spring race meet in American steeple chasing and Music City’s traditional rite of spring.

Favorite Old-Time Flowers Get New Boost for Planting Season

Clothing, food, and hip nightclubs don’t have a monopoly on trendiness. Flowers get ranked accordingly, too. And for those who like to stay on top of the latest flower trends, here’s a glimpse of what’s being talked about in 2019.

Science and chemistry combine with an eye for something pretty as breeders created a new line of impatiens for 2019: the Impatiens Imara XDR (it’s not a car -- honest). According to a story in PennLive, breeders have been working for six years to create a line of impatiens that resemble "the old-fashioned bedding impatiens that once was the top-selling annual flower."

A downy mildew disease in 2012 wiped out the impatiens and turned gardeners off of them; they turned to other plants or switched to an expensive hybrid, according to the story. The Imara XDR is seen as a solution to the problem. It’s available in seven colors.

Other varieties mentioned in the article include:

• The Vinca Tattoo series from PanAmerican seed, a four-color series with large flowers and multicolor patterns.

• A new zinnia from AmeriSeed Inc called Zinnia Elegance Scarlet, with orange-scarlet blooms and yellow stamens.

• Petunia look-alikes called Doublette Love Swept, a two-toned pink flower.

• A new begonia called the Viking XL Red on Chocolate, featuring red flowers on glossy dark burgundy leaves.

And if you’d like to stick with traditional spring flowers, look to tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, crocuses, and Lily of the Valley, among others.
