The Renaissance Man

Biography• Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452, in Vinci, Italy, just

outside Florence • when he was about 15 his father apprenticed him to the

renowned workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence • In 1485, Leonardo began working on all new studies having

to do with nature, flying, mechanics, geometry, designs for advance weapons like tanks and vehicles as well as others.

• His most famous painting in the 1490’s had to be his painting of the last super.

• Leonardo started work on his most known work, the Mona Lisa around 1503

• in1516, he was offered the title of Premier Painter and Engineer and Architect of the King by Francis I in France.

• Leonardo died on May 2, 1519 in Cloux, France.

Inventions• Leonardo drew plans for a

parachute in 1485• He drew designs for

military vehicles like the tank, helicopter, and the design for an airplane's landing gear.

• Leonardo had early ideas of SCUBA gear by connecting a hose to a chamber you can breath out of.

Leonardo’s Perspective• Leonardo's goal was to make

his paintings more real by studying nature and the world around him.

• He looked closely at how people, animals, and nature really looked.

• He studied how things look up close as oppose from far away.

• He used the mathematical system of linear perspective to help the painting’s realism.

Leonardo’s Artwork

• Like a lot of the artist of the renaissance, Leonardo was very interested in the human body.

• Many of Leonardo’s paintings are of people often without clothes.

• He loved to draw nature and animals.

Leonardo’s Writings• Da vinci was a very strange

writer. He invented his very own type of shorthand.

• Another strange thing about him was that he would sometimes write from right to left across the page and not left to right. He could have done this because he was left handed and the ink would not smear if he wrote right to left.

• He would only write something out normal if he knew someone was going to read it.

The Horse• 500 years ago, Leonardo da Vinci was paid by

the duke of Milan to construct a 24 feet high bronze horse.

• His clay model of the horse was destroyed by war and it was never constructed.

• Then in 1999, Nina Akamu constructed the bronze horse in appreciation and placed it in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

• Another 8 foot replica was crafted and put in Leonardo’s home town of Vinci, Italy in 2001.

Leonardo's effects• His studies and work have

influenced scientist, painter, and engineers all over the world for many years.

• He wrote and drew the frame work for inventions and ideas that has helped us actually design new things.

• He is remembered and credited for so many different things in his life that he accomplished and it is said when he died, the king of France was holding his head in his hands while crying.
