The goal of the St. Mary’s County

Citizens Academy is to provide

an overview of county programs and

services.

The Academy is a free, seven week

course open to county residents,

18 years of age and older. Sessions are

held Tuesday evenings from 6 - 9 p.m.

Participants will gain a better

understanding of county government

operations. Upon completion,

participants receive a certificate.

September 4 - County Overview - Chesapeake Building, Leonardtown

View the “2017 St. Mary’s State of the County” video and distribute Executive Summary. Explore the St. Mary’s County web-site (key areas of interest.) Distribute list of Boards/Commissions (volunteer opportunities). Overview of Administrative Services (County Administrator, County Attorney, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Public Information Office.)

September 11 - Aging & Human Services - Northern Senior Activity Center, Charlotte Hall

Overview of Aging and Human Services programs including: senior activity centers and nutrition sites; Aging and Disabilities Resources Center (Maryland Access Point); home and community-based services; Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP); children, youth and families; Local Management Board; Teen Court; Community development and homelessness.

September 18 - Economic Development Agricultural Services Center,Leonardtown

Overview of the functions of the Department including the Business Development Division, Agriculture and Seafood Division and Tourism function. Review the Strategic Plan to Build an Innovation Driven Economy. Distribute and review printed materials such as the Qual-ity of Life brochure, Property Tax Incentive brochure, Unmanned Autonomous Systems brochure and the Technology Resource Book.Describe recent activity at the airport and goal to create an Innovation District there.

October 3 - Land Use and Growth Management - Chesapeake Building, Leonardtown

Overview of land use planning, zoning, subdivi-sion of land, site development review, building permits, zoning inspections and zoning viola-tions, and final approval. Introduction to the ad-opted Comprehensive Land Use Plan and Lex-ington Park Development District Masterplan, Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances, Planning Commission, Board of Appeals, and Calvert – St. Mary’s Metropolitan Planning Organiza-tion for regional transportation. Overview of the Critical Area and floodplain regulations.
