The 29th of February is a special day because it only comes around every four years. But for Anne-Dauphine Julliand it is the birthday of her daughter Thaïs, who died at the age of three and a half of an incurable genetic disease. On the 29th of February 2012 she would have been eight years old. Her book, entitled Une journée particu-lière [A Special Day], talks about this day. The family survived this terrible ordeal, and it even got bigger. The reader meets Azylis, Thaïs’ little sister, who suffers from the same disease. She underwent transplant surgery at birth and she will soon turn 6. But Azylis is not out of the woods yet. The most recent addition to the family, Ar-thur, is in perfect health. He didn’t know his big sister, but Gaspard his older brother will be the first to tell him Thaïs’ story. Here, we rediscover anne-Dauphine Jul-liand’s talent for relating the small things in life and conveying immense emotions. her message remains simple, true and strong : we all need to be loved and we all need to be happy despite our ordeals. Perfectly autonomous and designed to be read independently of her last book, this story could nonetheless enrich the reading of Deux petits pas sur le sable mouillé [Two Small Footsteps on Wet Sand].

“‘Why don’t you go and play with your little friends ?’Stupid question, simple answer :When they’re let out into the schoolyard, the big kids pick on the medium-sized kids who pick on the little kids, who have no one to pick on. So they wait patiently until the following year to become medium-sized, then pick on the new lot of little ones. The big kids are the kings, but they don’t know who will be waiting for them next year. The following year, they’ll be little again. They may be kings, but all the same, they are not allowed to go into the neighbouring playground. It’s much too dangerous…”

When hugo horiot was 8 years old, his mother, Fran-çoise Lefèvre, told his story in a book, Le Petit Prince can-nibale, which won the Goncourt des Lycéens [Goncourt high-school jury prize]. This was the story of a mother who refused to be considered responsible for her son’s autism and decided to educate him herself. Today, Hugo is thirty. He is an actor and director.

i’M the eMperorhugo horiotL’iconoclaste

Hugo is autistic, with Asperger’s syndrome. He delves into his memories as an autis-tic child, and talks about how he suffered from being different : his refusal to speak, his desire to be someone else, to the point of wanting to change his name. He does not hide his own cruelty, either. He evokes his fourth year in the manner of a four-year-old child, following the same procedure through to his adolescence. We feel as though we are seeing the world through his eyes, as though we were in his head. He could have remained bitter, but he found resilience through theatre. Hugo was gradually able to overcome rejection and pain.this exceptional account helps us to understand what goes on within the mind of an extremely intelligent autistic child, his obsessions, his anxieties, his way of seeing things, and his concessions with respect to other children, tea-chers and psychiatrists. With disarming sincerity and a sense of detachment that is often funny, he also reveals the darker aspects of his personality, his calculating spirit, the spying he indulges in, and his omnipotence. all of this is told with an unsettling accuracy, which could not leave any reader indifferent.

Being a mother of twelve children, having experienced eleven pregnancies and as many miscarriages is also an adventure of the body. Then there’s the breast-fee-ding : between ten and twelve months for each newborn. Marielle speaks candidly about this carnal aspect of maternity. being a mother also means educating and providing guidance. Marielle tells us how she strives to be as present as possible for each one of her children. —At the end of the book, there are two ‘notebooks’ : Marielle’s recipes in under twenty minutes, for less than 10 euros. “What does it feel like to live in a huge family ?” from the children’s perspective (in words or drawings) and from Pierre’s, the father. —The book contains black and white photos. —pascale Kremer has been a journalist with Le Monde for twenty years.

Marielle blanchier is 43 ; she is a mother of 12 children and lives in Sceaux in the Parisian region with her whole family.—

the incredible story of Marielle, mother of twelve children.Marielle was born in Holland in a family of three children. She grew up in Bordeaux and opted out of a doctorate in physics and chemistry. She left on an Erasmus ex-change to King’s College in London, where she met her future husband, who was just finishing his engineering training. After postgraduate studies in food-proces-sing management, Marielle got married at 22. She started working and had two mis-carriages in quick succession. At 24, she was expecting twins, and then followed her husband abroad. When she returned to France she had four children under three and decided to stop working. Eight more children were to come into the world. In all, ten boys and two girls. It was not a conscious decision, but each new child be-came an obvious choice. Marielle tells us about her daily life with her twelve children. Her days follow a tight schedule : grocery shopping, cooking, school runs, mana-ging conflicts, colds in the winter, leisure activities, holidays, etc.

“Shame… Is it tolerable that it sticks to the skin of a child ? That it tortures the soul of a little girl who quickly understands that few people have consideration for her origins. Therefore, she is ashamed to be an Arab. She dreams of being called Émilie, of being blonde with blue eyes, of having her own room, all to herself, full of toys. In reality, she is ashamed when her mother, covered by her veil, enveloped in her shapeless djellaba, comes to get her at the school gates and speaks Arabic in front of Lucille and Nicolas. She is ashamed to say that she is going on holiday to Algeria, while they’re going to the south of France. Even if it’s in the same direction, and almost the same land !”

—Du côté de chez moi is a story in the tradition of Le gone du Chaaba by Azouz Begag (1986) or Kiffe Kiffe demain by Faïza Guène (2004).

—salima senini was born in 1977 in Algeria. When she was three-month-old, her parents moved to a council house in Paris’ suburbs. All her life, she has been torn between her Algerian heritage and Wes-tern culture. Now at 36, she is at peace with herself and works as a social worker in Paris.

In 1977, Salima had three months when her parents and seven brothers and sisters left Algeria and moved to Mantes-la-Jolie, in the Parisian suburbs, to a new neigh-bourhood consisting of huge apartment blocks, known as Val-Fourré. Very soon, Val Fourré was deserted by native French people and became an urban ghetto for immigrant families from North Africa. 35 years later, the young woman, now Parisian, looks back on her childhood. she describes the painful gap between her parents’ world and the western modernity that she gradually discovered and that attracted her. Parado-xically, the arrival of Arabic TV channels and satellites reinforced the native culture or favoured the rise of Islamism. Between imposed traditions, sibling bonds among the eight children, and her dreams of emancipation, Salima sought a way of life to suit her. She secretly rejected the constraints of feminine codes – cooking, virginity and marriage – and found her path to freedom in books. this first book relates both the upheavals of immigration and the life-changing power of reading.

On 17 September 1986, Patrick Denaud was one of the first journalists present just after the bombing in the Rue de Rennes (Paris) that resulted in 7 deaths and 55 casualties. Deeply shocked by this carnage, Patrick now has but one goal : to fight Islamic terrorism. He got back in touch with the French secret services, which had already approached him on his return from Afghanistan. His cover would be his profession as a journalist. behind his impeccable career as a journalist, he secretly served as a spy for the French intelligent army. In this book, he des-cribes his recruitment, training and all aspects of his daily life as a journalist / spy. For the “agency”, he accepted to lead a double live. Lies and manipulation became second nature and solitude in daily life came with the territory. This book is also a confession and the examination of a conscience.

“I was a journalist reporting on Islam in Eu-rope : end of story. I was totally inconspicuous. I’m still persuaded that even a trained agent could not have acquired the reflexes, codes and journalistic culture that the years of work in the field had inculcated in me.”

“For the first time, a journalist admits he worked for the French secret services. Patrick Denaud breaks the silence et reveals his double life and his manipulations in a ‘disturbing’ book.”Le parisien Magazine

“You read Silence will keep you as a novel. It demystifies the James Bond image of the spy, showing the small boring tasks asked, far from what you see at the cinema.”La charente Libre

—Cameraman for TF1 and war correspondent for CBS News, patrick Denaud cofounded Doc Reporter and chaired the Syndicat des agences de press (AFP, Reuters, RTL, Eu-rope 1, M6…).

Christian Bobin is the author of many successful books (Gallimard, Le Mercure de France) and presents here 15 new tales. his unique and poetic eye transfigures daily life and incites contemplation. These tales are portraits, encounters or visions, in which we recognise eve-rything that has made the author of The Missing Part, or The More than alive so successful. In his writing, moments of grace oscillate with ecstatic contemplation. god is never far from the poetry that emanates from his attentive observation of beings and things. —christian bobin was born in 1951 in Le Creusot. He lives near his hometown, in a house in the heart of the forest, where he devotes himself entirely to writing. He is the author of nearly twenty books, including :

an illustrated psychology book to teach meditationMeditation is increasingly popular because it gently eliminates stress and tension. Chris-tophe André, who has been meditating for 10 years, introduces the reader to this practice through comprehensible methods, adapted illustrations, and a CD of guided meditations that he created.

the paintings that illustrate the meditations communicate the mental and phy-sical reality of this training. Finally, the exercises at the end of the chapters, along with a CD of short guides to meditating (5 to 15 minutes in length) allow the reader to experiment with this approach at home.

On the same day Thaïs turned two, anne-Dauphine Julliand learned that her daughter was suffering from an incurable disease. Her heartrending story tells the struggle of their relatives and friends, a moving network of solidarity, all united for one magnificent cause : to make Thaïs’s short life as beautiful as possible. they were all blessed in return with the most precious gift of all : her unrestrained liveliness, joy and love.

a stunning duetEva Joly and Judith Perrignon have been working for the past two years on this captivating thriller. Their novel associates a perfect grasp of financial networks with the dark sides of power and criminal investigations, with unforgettable atmospheres in the Faroe Islands, at the Nice Courthouse or again the Quai d’Orsay (France). in the wave of nordic who-dunits, Lira’s Eyes is a thriller that will leave readers on the edge of their seat, written in the tone of a high-speed car chase. The background is the countdown to an imminent financial apocalypse. It dives into the depth of the sheltered abyss of widespread corruption, inhabited by a cold-blooded Russian oligarch, a corrupt offshore banker, croo-ked lawyers, and a prosecutor whose hands are tied. A low ranked trio will step up to this politico-financial Leviathan figure, who is at the height of his power and influence.

“An undeniable proof to those who saw the financial crisis as unrelated to globalized capitalism.”Libération
