SUGGESTED LESSON PLAN IDEAS HOME

Foundation

Brainstorm room in the house – OHP/hands game/recording of ‘Through the

Keyhole’;

Hands game;

Pupils video their own home and give a detailed account;

Practise tenses by saying what pupil’s do/did in their rooms;

Give pupils an architect’s plan of a house/bedroom and ask pupils to position the

furniture – use a code;

Pupils write up 2 lists of advantages/disadvantages of living at home and produce

posters.

Higher

Pupils describe their dream home;

Use magazine like ‘OK’ or ‘Hello’, they describe a celebrities house;

With the volume turned down to the English version of ‘Through the Keyhole’, pupils

invent a commentary (could use two TVs and separate the class into 2 groups – so the

other group has to guess like a competition by asking appropriate questions);

Give pupils an architect’s plan of a house/bedroom and ask pupils to position the

furniture – use a code. Then swap the plans and get their partners to analyse why

they positioned the furniture in a certain way, for example, le lit est derrière la porte

JOBS AROUND THE HOUSE

Foundation

Using cards, pupils match the picture of appliance with the phrase;

Make up a questionnaire to find out what jobs they do around the house. Write up the

results graphically and highlight gender differences etc.

Higher

Find out why they do/don’t do jobs around the house and make up possible role plays

between parent/child

DAILY ROUTINE

Foundation

Revise reflexives through the hands game/OHP/cards etc;

Cut up cards into three categories and pupils match the right reflexive with the right

time and room, for example, je me lave à 7h30 dans la sale de bains.

Introduce some adverbs and let pupils extend the list by using their dictionary;

Mime reflexives in different manners – pupils have to guess the adverb;

Pupils describe the daily routine of another person, for example, a milkman

Survey and graph to show what time pupils get up/go to bed at the weekend (work out

the average).

Higher

Brainstorm as many reflexives as possible;

Analyse past tense patterns;

Pupils imagine a day spent with a famous person and describe it – in the past tense.

FOOD AND DRINK

Foundation

Revision of mealtimes by catorgorising foods into the correct columns: Au petit

déjeuner/Au déjeuner /Au dîner etc.

Read café menus and invent role plays and video them.

Poster work to describe different foods and drinks – healthy eating v fast-food.

Higher

Using a ’Fawlty Towers’ set up, pupils make up role plays, complaining/making

excuses about meals in a restaurant.

Discuss advertising and the morale behind supermodels/fast food chains. Link it with

nationalities – the Americans and the French. Pupils write letters of complaints to a

local newspaper explaining their point of view.

HEALTH AND FITNESS

Foundation

Draw a skeleton of the body and pupils can label it using a dictionary.

Invent role plays at the doctors, dentist and chemists.

Higher

Continue with the theme above – food and health. Introduce smoking, drinking and

drugs through poster work and writing letters to friends etc.

Survey the class and work the statistics of those who smoke, drink etc and why.
