Chennai: LPG consumers without Aadhaar cards may have to pay more than double the price for LPG cylinders from October as the Centre is planning to link subsidy on cooking gas to the cards. Statistics compiled by the Unique Identification Au- thority of India (UIDAI) shows that Tamil Nadu has the lowest number of Aadhaar cards, 1.8 crore, in the south. According to the 2011 cen- sus, Tamil Nadu has a popula- tion of 7.2 crore and nearly 91 lakh LPG connections. And- hra Pradesh has 5.7crore cards, Kerala 2.4 crore and Karnataka 2.1 crore. In Chen- nai, with a population of 65 lakh, only 2.3 lakh Aadhaar cards have been issued. LPG distributors said even those with the cards will have to buy cylinders at non- subsidized rates. The government will later transfer the subsidy amount to the customer’s bank ac- count. In Chennai, a subsidized cylinder of 14.2kg costs Rs 380, against the market price of Rs 891.50. The UIDAI has issued 32 crore Aadhaar cards and nearly 80 lakh bank accounts have been linked to the cards. Sources said a pilot project for LPG subsidy transfer that plans to cover 20 districts across the country by May 15 does not touch Tamil Nadu. Consumer activists slammed the Centre’s deci- sion to link the cards with the subsidy. “There is no public aware- ness on the Aadhaar project and many don’t know how to enroll for it. But the govern- ment is in a hurry to penalize people,” said V S Suresh, con- sumer activist and an advo- cate in the Madras high court. Get Aadhaar, else pay more for LPG Christin Mathew Philip TNN

Madikeri: Defying social stigma, a bride inSunticoppa, a small town in Kodagu district, has declared she is a lesbian and refused to gowith her husband.

Ramya (name changed) gotmarried on April 21. Soon aftermarriage, she came to her par-ents’ home and told them shewon’t go with her husband. Shelodged a complaint in Sunticop-pa police station claiming shewas forced into marriage byher parents. Locals who say sheis in a relationship with a girlfrom Hoskote near Sunticoppahave protested against Ra-mya’s decision.

When matters came to ahead, Sunticoppa sub-inspec-tor Krishnakumar intervenedand tried to advise Ramyaagainst taking hasty decisions.

When she refused to rethink, she was sentto the women’s rehabilitation centre at Madik-eri for counselling. This attempt also failedand the local people on Wednesday protestedin front of the Sunticoppa police station de-

manding that she be sent back to her hus-band’s house.

When Krishnakumar again tried to per-suade her, she remained adamant and the peo-ple who gathered began teasing her gay com-panion who was with her. When the

companion threatened to strip, the protestors just vanished.

Ramya who is now livingwith her companion in Hoskotetold TOI that she would not livewith her parents. She said shewill join a private firm in My-sore and lead her own life.

On Wednesday evening,Kushalnagar circle inspectorGanesh met her in Hoskote vil-lage and counselled her to goback to her parents first andthen decide about her future.

Ramya agreed and went toher parents but still she is notwilling to go back to her hus-

band. Ganesh told TOI that he had temporari-ly succeeded in convincing her to live with herparents.

Her dejected parents said they will no long-er bother about her as she has defied socialnorms.
