DONATION FROM BROOKE DISCOUNT HARDWARE

Transforming a very large area of grounds from a weed infested patch of ground to a productive, attractive and inspiring space for students and staff is no mean feat. But our army of Year 7s, under the leadership of Mrs Richards, Mrs Watson and Mr Boon, have achieved just that. A big thank you for the organisation and hard work of all who have put in a lot of care to make this happen.

We also want to send a very big thank you to Mrs Danae Mackie of Brooke Discount Hardware who has very generously donated our lovely new big red wheelbarrow and a pallet of earth enriching manures. It means a lot to the gardening group.

See more about Year 7s’ adventures this week later in this issue.

A very nice surprise arrived at our school recently. His name is Private Ernest Harvey the bear. Thank you to the Bullsbrook branch of the Returned Services League who donated to our school an ANZAC Bear. Ours is Private Ernest Harvey who’s story is being shared across primary classrooms this week and next.

These bears are available on www.anzacbears.com.au and are part of a not-for-profit initiative in support of education of young Australians. The Centenary of Armistice Day falls on Sunday, 11 November, 2018. On Monday, 12 November, we will have one minute’s silence at 11.00 am to remind us all of this poignant moment in history.

YEAR 7 CONGRATULATIONS

After such an excellent year with the Year 7 students, the team decided to have a special assembly to celebrate an congratulate the fabulous behaviour, respect and academic progress demonstrated by the students. Mrs Richards, Mr Boon and Mrs Watson issued certificates for students showing great manners, teamwork, friendship to others, progress and positive attitude. Over the next two weeks the Year 7 theme will be good manners with the team role playing scenarios which exemplify what they are and why they matter so much.

YEAR 7 STEM

As a thank you to all the Year 7 students, Mrs Alder organised a STEM activity. The challenge was to see who could build the tallest tower from pasta (spaghetti) and marshmallows. As always our enthusiastic Year 7s came out on top with a tower that was a huge 85 centimetres tall. What a superb effort!

YEAR 4 LANDCARE EXCURSION

On Friday 12th October the Year 4 classes took part in a Junior Landcare Expo excursion held at the Lower Chittering Hall and Oval. It was a very interactive day for the students which included a variety of land care activities that taught students the importance of and how to care for the environment.

Once we arrived after the short bus trip, we were welcomed and shown the learning stations around the oval. Each group spent 30 minutes with a presenter at each station. Students got to take part in learning sessions such as; Birdlife, Wildlife Carers, Conservation, Keep Australia Beautiful and Friends of the Western Swamp Tortoise. Besides 10 minutes of light rain the weather was kind and didn’t interrupt the day.

Many of the students really enjoyed seeing and learning about some of the wildlife that were currently in care after being injured. There were possums, red and grey kangaroos and two tawny frogmouths with injured eyes. It was a valuable learning experience to know that there are carers who look after small and sick animals and care for them until they are ready to be released back to their natural environment.

Students were given the chance to learn about other animals by; walking around a bush section to do some bird watching, meeting a black cockatoo and learning how it finds a nest and breeds. They also matched the frog sound to the correct frog.

I’d like to acknowledge each class for their great behaviour and involvement in all the activities. Also, thank you to the Year 4 class teachers and parents who attended and helped out on the day.

Mr Thyer, Primary Science Specialist

Thanks to the efforts of the team at Bullsbrook/Chittering Landcare, we have been the recipients of $1650.00 from the Swan Alcoa Landcare funding for 2019.

The funds will be used for the purchase of endemic species from Muchea Tree Farm and our team at the school will assist with planting of the seedlings, ongoing removal of rubbish and general maintenance of the area.

Warm thanks to Danielle Romiti and her colleagues. We look forward to keeping the community informed of our progress with this project.

USE OF PLAYGROUNDS BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL

Our school provides a good variety of playground equipment which is used extensively by students during break times, as well as at other times throughout the day where appropriate – particularly in the early years. Students are always very well supervised during these times. We have signs attached to every playground explaining that the playground equipment is not to be used outside of the normal school day. This relates to our supervision and duty of care for students while

on school grounds. Unfortunately we have had a couple of incidents recently when students have been injured while using play equipment at the end of the day after classes have finished. As a school we are very focussed on student safety and wellbeing. We therefore ask all parents that you do not allow your child/ren to play on any equipment at the beginning or end of the day, and thank you in advance for your cooperation in this.

Year 11 Hospitality students recently hosted a lunch for a few lucky secondary staff members to show our appreciation for the hard work they do. The Hospitality students worked exceptionally well as a team to produce some delicious food. They also set up the room, served their customers and delivered the food and drinks in a friendly and professional manner. Well done to the students involved.

PLANNING 2019

We are well into our planning for 2019. Enrolment information is very important for this planning. We are keen to know of anyone intending to enrol with us for 2019 that has not yet done so. If you, or anyone you know of, is intending to enrol their child(ren) for 2019 and have not already contacted the school, please encourage them to do so at their earliest convenience – this includes for Kindergarten and Pre-Primary. We ask that if you know that your child(ren) will not be attending our school in 2019, please pass this information to the school office.

To attend Kindergarten in 2019, children need to have been born between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015. If your child’s birthday falls within these dates, and he/she is not yet enrolled, please complete an application for enrolment as soon as possible. Forms can be accessed from the Reception.
