Summary

My work has integrated practice, leadership, policy development and academic work at national and local levels. I

have lived and worked in the UK and in Canada. I have served on three national committees in the UK, including The

Expert Maternity Group (Department of Health, 1993), The House of Commons Health Select Committee (Review of

the Maternity Services, 2003) and The Inquiry into the Safety of the Maternity Services (The King’s Fund, 2007-

2008). I was also Deputy Chairman of the English National Board for Nursing Midwifery and Health Care (1993-

1999).

I was appointed Professor of Midwifery in 1992, the first such appointment in the UK (see Page, 2009). My main

academic interests have been in the development and evaluation of One-to-One Midwifery, using evidence in practice

and evaluation of place of birth. My book ‘The New Midwifery: Science and Sensitivity in Practice’ has been

influential to midwives around the world, and has been translated into French and Japanese.

While in British Columbia Canada in the 1980s, I helped establish the first legally recognised midwifery service in the

health service and returned for a year in 2000 to help establish the midwifery programme at the University of British

Columbia and the Department of Midwifery at the Children’s and Women’s Health Centre of British Columbia and St

Paul’s Vancouver. I have worked and lectured in 13 different countries. I have enjoyed a special relationship with

Australia where I lectured for the first time in 1986, and where I studied for and was awarded the degree of Doctor of

Philosophy in 2005 by University of Technology Sydney.

I have lectured and been visiting professor /scholar internationally over many years and in many different countries.

I was made Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Midwives in 2007 in recognition of my considerable

contribution to the profession. I am a member of the Board of the RCM.

I am actively involved in clinical practice and have practised in every area of practice including hospital, community,

birth centre and home.

My professional activities have focused on developing a form of midwifery that provides effective and sensitive care

for mothers and their babies and the communities in which they live. At the core of this work has been an awareness

of the fundamental significance of pregnancy and birth and the early weeks of family life for individuals, families,

communities and ultimately for the society in which we live.
